What would you do if you lost your phone? Like really lost it. Not just you thought you did, but then found it under the couch. Do you have all your things backed up? Well, I lost mine in a busy area of Toronto and although I didn't cry, I definitely went through some phases of grief. Luckily some things had backed up, but my photos did not. OMG, we were gone for soooo long guys! We both needed a break and we took a longer break than we were hoping, but it was well deserved. First, after this episode we will be on a bit of a summer break. We have to help them understand that being overwhelmed is ok, and there are ways to deal with these feelings. Make sure they feel safe and talk to them about how they are feeling. Do your kids feel strongly about things? Are they itching to go to a march for a cause? Or maybe they're like mine and they just care about what Pokémon card they traded with their friends that day. Sometimes the small things you do for your community get overlooked, but really you're thinking locally instead of trying to make big global impacts. Whatever you do to help your kids become more aware of the world around them and how create change, make sure you do it at a level you can also participate in. Today we discuss the decline in Home Economic type classes in schools, and the benefit they have on our kids. I'm sure some form of life skills are taught, but from what we can tell, these classes aren't offered as often any more. Why not? Unless we're taking the time to teach our kids how to cook, change tires, balance a budget, and just basic life skills at home, school is the next best place. As we discuss in the episode, make it a compulsory class for everyone to take and make it well rounded for everyone to enjoy it. When we think "Home Ec." our minds go to a room full of girls learning to cook muffins while mending aprons, but it doesn't have to be like that. If your school still offers these classes, that's awesome, if it doesn't, what are your thoughts? Would your child benefit from a life skills type class...maybe call it somethings like "Life Skills Sciences" to make it more generic.
