Quantum Cognition with Jerome R. Busemeyer Do humans think more like quantum computers than classical computers? Cynthia Sue Larson talks with Jerome R. Busemeyer about the new field of quantum cognition and his book, "Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision." Busemeyer describes how he became interested in investigating the ways quantum logic and theory provides a fundamentally different--and in many cases more accurate--foundational model by which to better understand how humans think and make decisions. The order and context of events turns out to make a significant difference in the decisions we make, which helps explain why people sometimes answer very differently when we change the order of the questions that we ask. Dr. Jerome R. Busemeyer is a Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. His research includes mathematical models of learning and decision making, and he has formulated a dynamic theory of human decision making called decision field theory. Jerome Busemeyer is the recipient of the 2015 Howard Crosby Warren Medal of the Society of Experimental Psychologists in recognition of longstanding contributions in dynamic decision making and pioneering work in models of quantum cognition. Dr. Busemeyer is one of two co-authors of the book, "Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision."

Mindfulness, Healing, and Death: Conversation with Dr. Bob Stahl This week’s guest, Bob Stahl, the founder and director of three mindfulness-based stress reduction programs at three medical centers in the San Francisco Bay area, shares with us his unique path into the healing profession, and what he has discovered. Two of his most beloved family members died during Dr. Stahl’s childhood, awakening in him confusion and an enduring interest – what is this thing called death that can wreak such havoc in one’s life? What does it mean, and what can we do about it? This led him on a quest, beginning with a study of the physical process of death, then continuing with an exploration of its social, spiritual, and psychological factors. This, in time, led him to the committed practice of Buddhism and 8 ½ years in a monastery. Today’s second song is Mariam’s “Reflect The Light” which the band takes with a flamenco, Southern European flavor “Sing Down The Walls” is a track from Mariam’s “Gaea Star Crystal: Awakening The Tribes Of Light” cd and is presented with a light, deft touch that complements Mariam’s lovely, authentic vocal. “Radiant Being” is a mysterious, dramatic song driven by Mariam’s DADGAD-tuned Martin 12-string and culminates in sheets of marimba and piano from Craig and Bob. The Mariam three-chord classic “All Those Times” follows with Mariam’s ukulele dancing across a grooving, busy rhythm for Craig and Bob. “Singing The Same Song” grows out of an extended outro to “Times” and is a playful ragtime with some dynamic conga work from Craig and a beautiful, rich coda full of hypnotic repetition, crisscrossing motifs and Mariam’s uplifting lyric. “Ferdinand The Noble Bull” is an operatic ragtime story about Ferdinand’s best day and also about Jenny the Mule. Today’s final performance is the sweeping, beautiful “Let’s Just Fly” with Mariam letting fly on her native flute over an epic, sweeping series of piano motifs.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #198 begins with a downward eastern scale on the piano, a quick bird call from the flute and a flourish from the congas as Mariam Massaro, Bob Sherwood and Craig Harris of the Gaea Star Band begin Mariam’s lush “Goodbye Happy New Year”. A beautiful minor improvised song of slowly rising intensity, the piece moves gradually to major as the sun rises in Mariam’s spare and spacious poetry. “Mountain Of Life” finds Mariam strumming a tight progression on the baritone ukulele against Craig’s eternal groove, Bob’s piano dancing above like a busy, impatient bird. A lovely, timeless quality emerges as Mariam spins a lyric of opportunity and choice and the band sets up a tense, insistent Afro-Cuban groove and Bob lights up a series of fiery, neurotic piano licks. “Zebulon and Lorenzo The Dragon” is a pretty, dulcimer-driven folk tale in the finest Mariam Massaro tradition with tight marimbas from Craig and a late-entering piano fanfare from Bob. A sweeping, misty coda, lush with echoes and Mariam’s lovely melismas leads into “I Am Whole And Complete In All Of Me”. This compelling, mysterious piece is characterized by Mariam’s dramatic vocal over a dreamy, romantic rhythm of marimba and piano. Mariam moves to sitar and Dameron Midgett joins us on didjeridoo for an eastern-styled Solstice prayer called “In The Stillness Of The Night”.
