DTD 88 - The Mid Sussex Brass Band rock the house!

Barwick Green rang out across the swimming pool in Thailand, courtesy of the Mid Sussex Brass Band, including the Doom section! Lucy noted that Ruth is keen on cows and life again (on the other side of the world) whilst David is on the point of selling them and then she quoted an entire "Round the Horne" script. Elizabeth is about to inherit a second of Shula's exes in the form of DDD - the Deadly Doc Dick! Ro.i.field wants a DTD without any mention of Roy & Helen as it is now unbalancing the podcast as much as the original docu-drama, although he had missed at least one episode. The personality transplant fairy is spending a bit too much time in Ambridge with not enough character consistency; this is inevitable on TV but hopefully avoided on The Archers. Homeland was held up as an example to follow. Lucy predicted that Ian and Adam would not get married next week; with the potential for Rob to cause mischief and Charlie's infatuation with bollocks, at least I think that is what she said. And we all love Oliver for rescuing the Grundies. In case you missed it Dan is going out with Dorothy. Later Millie commented on David's missing bollocks and Ruth's rubbish explanation over buying an air ticket which may be related. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: Candida Beeching who’s in cheery mood Blithe Spirit who thinks the Archers should take a leaf out of Homeland’s book Witherspoon who says Titchynaaab Jo Jo Sexy Heels who says Elizabeth has form Andrew Horne who can see where Rob gets it from

Dtd-87 - Rob fatigue, biscuits as history and the sexiest man in Jamaica

Lucy has reached the point where she has disassociated herself from the entire Rob and Helen storyline. It has been dragged out for far too long in atrocious detail and consequently like the flood has completely unbalanced the entire docudrama and the remaining village inhabitants are not getting a fair share of the microphones. As a result the Fairbrethern end up being treated like Pinky and Perky (or Sesame Street) thinly drawn characters compared with the Dostoevsky-like excellence contained in the abuse story. And Lucy is equally upset at the poor treatment handed out to Joe - the real world does not work like that. Historically stories would usually be well researched and managed by the team via the editor - but currently there are so many loose ends a lot does not make sense. This theme recurred in a number of calls. Jim discovered that the flood assessments for Route B used the wrong hydraulic model in the light of the flood and therefore the assessment needed to be done again correctly. A generic model was used rather than one specific to the locale. Roifield complained about not getting a word in edgeways as Lucy sailed through the calls but our hosts were able to confirm that the Archers Archivist has been pensioned off - hence underlying continuity being a complete mess. A BBC money saving exercise no doubt. Somehow biscuits then took over the programme and Roifield shoe-horned a Battenburg cake into the process. And the Tweet of the Week was an advert for a new husband after he broke a DumTeeDumm mug - and have you bought yours for Christmas yet? Time to catch my Etihad taxi. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: Robin Winning who says Route B is poisonous Everazephyr who’s found the moral message Jacqueline Bertho who thinks Helen might start fighting back Yokelbear who’s sulking Vicky Cole who is heartbroken Witherspoon who’s turned into Eliza Dolittle Michele laferte who wants to know why rob is getting everything he wants and Kosmo who’s flooded India.

Dum tee dum Episode: 86 - More Archers, more calls and more Andrew Horn love

Roifield returns but awesome Andrew Horn has become the Terminator and he WILL BE BACK. Dumteedummer of the week is Aunty Jean repeating herself from last week. Lucy translated the Archers into Peanuts characters this week. Discussion revealed an Archers event in Bristol which indicated that Rob and Helen may well continue into 2016 despite earlier thoughts it would finish at Christmas. The writing team have once again been unable to cope with the balance needed by different stories - too much weight given to abuse of Helen whilst the Grundy homelessness has been given short shrift. This happened before when Adam was kidnapped and other stories were neutered. Roifield sought calendar contributions of suitably arranged, tasteful, photographs with any funds from the calendar raised going to Refuge. Lucy offered Christmas cards signed by either Derek in the back bedroom or Sabrina Thwaite after proof of a donation to Refuge. Absences and staying in touch. Soon after completing this summary I shall be heading off to India again (Aus/NZ are next year). Blog posts should appear - so read those if you want to know what I am doing. Ruth can do the same for her two weeks - so Usha should read those! Housing problems in Ambridge confounded our commentators - no room for the Grundies whilst Kirsty is given a room at the drop of a hat. Sean called in - not for the first time. His suggestion that Rob would want the termination of a female baby was instantly the subject of cold water from a great height. Yokel Bear reckoned that Pip has grown up too quickly - but has forgotten that for a long period she has been absent at university and so we have not heard her growing up - the stroppy teenager was some years ago when she was seeing Jude. The new voice has perhaps added to the sense of change in Pip. The "Lady in the Van" was discussed and my view is that the film was a far better format to convey the entire story than the stage play I saw many years ago. I think having one person play both Alan Bennetts worked extremely well. Roifield had also seen it. On this week’s episode we have calls from: Sean Gerahty who has a very nasty idea about Rob Emily thomas who can see eating disorder clues Dusty Substances who says New Zealand is the Oxford ring road Andrew Horn who is looking for property Kate Unwin who thinks Charlie will become deranged Yokelbear who thinks he’s Sigourney Weaver Wetherspoon who is looking for portents and Goddess Deeva who’s become a Dalek

Dum Tee Dum Episode 85 – Andrew Horn takes the Helm

Sponsorship this week from UrbanSprawl.org.uk and Barwick Green by Aunty Jean plus William the parrot who was upset at not being included last week. Andrew Horn was sitting in for Roifield, providing he did not do it as well as the man himself. Lucy nailed Ruth's stroppiness - pointing out that she has just dropped over 30 years and turned into a teenager. And Jenny's old kitchen has finally found a home in the village hall. How long has that story been maturing? Opinions on Lynda swing violently depending on the time of year. Much praise for Tony for standing up to Rob. We are reminded of some back stories this week - particularly Helen's illness when born and how she weak was then leading Pat to being particularly protective of her daughter and therefore siding with Rob over the danger of driving, bearing in mind the last accident involving Mike. Roifield was given a long task list, Andrew is on the Colombian free trade and he was joined by Lucy. Andrew also revealed the secret life of a chorister. Millie Belle reported a bumper crop of activity on Facebook - particularly with Ambridge becoming Ruthless (for only two weeks!) and David referring to getting shot by being late for the restaurant booking! There were a lot of callers this week: Paul Douglas predicted that Rob's parents would reveal that he has previously only fathered girls. Michelle Lafferty is another first time caller and acknowledges that David is not jerk - but just being a farmer. Claire from Scotland via Canada who thinks Ruth needs help expressing herself Jacqueline Bertho turned the focus onto Pip who has effectively replaced Ruth everywhere except in David's bed. Miss Mid City can see no sense in Ruth's decision to go - but hopes she will not come back. After all Ruth cannot run away from herself. Nosila and Witherspoon majored on Helen's problems and Pat's siding with Rob - but there are reasons from history. FInally Vicky Cole is incredulous with Alan and there were crickets in the background

Dum Tee Dum Episode 84 – The aftermath

DumTeeDum opened with a recording from the DTD get together at the weekend where many podcast listeners gathered and both Lucy and Roifield recalled various encounters and non-encounters during the evening. Apparently even some lurkers were outed - and must now call in. Ruth's constant moaning is getting everyone down - especially the way that Jill is being used by the family - at 85! Lucy attributes it to misguided guilt - but I reckon it is just mis-use of the character. Yes Ruth deserves some sympathy - but she needs to get involved and talk to David - it works both ways. Comparisons of Ruth's behaviour to Rob are also growing, particularly over her lack of loyalty to David. Speakpipe is working again. Lucy thanked all the DumTeeDummers for their excellent online behaviour - all the best listeners are here. And it appears that they are all extremely glamorous as well - just as well I was not there! Lucy was obviously still feeling delicate - no alcohol this week - just water and tea! Millie provided the usual update from the rest of the interwebby world and would welcome more posts on the DTD facebook page. Justin Elliott is coming across far nastier than before (Lucy has changed her view over his wanting his name on the village hall) - but no-one has pointed out that the reason that I feel Justin employs Charlie. The two of them are perhaps of a similar sexual persuasion (and possibly have previously had a relationship). It is unusual for Simon Williams to take a "nasty" role! Beth Miller joined the podcast to talk about her book "For the Love of the Archers" and is interviewed by Roifield about her long time Archers fandom. It is an update of "An Unofficial Companion" from about 4 years ago. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: Miss Mid City who wants to know what Ruth’s problem is Witherspoon who feels sorry for Charlie Vicky Cole who doesn’t understand Rob and Blithe Spirit who wants to say thank you.

Dum Tee Dum Episode 83 – A nice short show with Kate Unwin

Lucy revealed she will be coming to the DTD “dinner” in a blouse and nothing else apparently. Reports awaited. There may still be opportunities to join the party. Lucy has abandoned double entendres in favour of single ones – dumbing down for the masses! Kate Unwin is a new listener and first time callerinerer who phoned in because Roifield had told her to do so – the power he wields! She knows Annabelle Dowler having worked with her and Kate has also been appointed as a new member of Roifield’s wonder women! Lucy also has a new member of her posse. Scruff is haunting Angus Haggis, whilst Witherspoon and everyone else is glad that Jill is returning to Brookfield given the poor writing over the ineptitude of the Brookfield residents to undertake any housework ever. Mark my words there will be Grundies at Bridge Farm by the New Year when the Sterlings decide not to return from Italy. Deborah predicted this as a tweet but I don’t think Oliver will die – because he has children who would inherit the farm; so they will be tenants. Why has everyone forgotten that the Bridge Farm brand name has been dead ever since Clarrie’s e-coli outbreak? It is all called Ambridge Organics now – so it has to be the Ambridge Tea Room! And if you have Skype you can now call in to the podcast although Roifield thinks that the cache will clear and Speakpipe will work again soon. Kosmo This weeks Callerinerers   Kate Unwin who does what she’s told Witherspoon and Angus Haggis who’s being haunted by Scruff JoJo sexy Heels who has strong words for Ruth Andrew Horn who’s glad Jill’s back and Goddess Deeva’s back! Dum Tee Dum Episode 82 – Rob revisionism and Amy Gilbert

This week Peter Stirk sponsored the podcast on behalf of WaterAid – please support them. During Lucy’s monologue I think she implied that Miranda is not funny – so I am not the only one. Ed needs luck and some financial collateral. Lucy has forgotten that Helen saw Ian a few weeks ago when the coven were meeting at Gay Grables, although he has vanished since. The South Kensington Lycee always had the best looking girls when I lived in the area – and Roifield confirmed that little has changed! Roifield also highlighted (thank you) the way Kenton suddenly recovered his mental health – an unbalanced approach by not treating the story with equal handedness. Can the New Year bring more equal treatment to all stories please? Lucy has promised to arrive at the DTD meal in Lady Godiva style having confirmed her assets are in good order. Meanwhile Millie Belle has discovered boffing. The last 20 minutes is the story of Amy Gilbert: http://readingagency.org.uk/news/media/hoz-announce-winner-of-your-story-her-words-competition.html I am sure we all wish her well in her quest. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: Yokelbear wants to go on Joe’s ghost tour Emily Thomas who wants Ian back Jo Jo Sexy heels who wants humble pie eaten. Dum Tee Dum Episode 81 – Two calls Ducks, Geese and Greece

A multi-national Dum Tee Dum opened the show which this week was sponsored by Water Aid. Speakpipe might be playing up – so calls were limited this week. As a result Roifield was desperately filling – linking tv zombies to botulism and salmonella in chicken where with some surprise he could reveal that the incidence of salmonella in US chickens is decreasing. Sounded like a ramble in the countryside for me. K J England blames Rob for hiding Scruff in the silage – but this is pretty unlikely as the silage was made after the flood. So Rob is probably innocent on this count and was exonerated by both Lucy and Roifield. Much of the episode descended into discussion of preparing future episodes whilst unclothed – something for which Roifield declared he was all up for it. Nakedness was also key to the tweet of the week. Johns the tenth and eleventh were appointed. And in recognition of JoJo Sexy Heels there will be no more shop news until after Christmas. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: K J England who thinks Rob stashed Scruff and Witherspoon who wonders whether Adam realises that gullible isn’t in the dictionary. Dum Tee Dum Episode 79 – Jane Perrone

“Don’t cry for me” said the plants as Jane Perrone the horticultural editor of the Guardian joined our hosts this week; so it is a highly organic and very educational podcast with mentions of the restorative powers of dettol and sugar solutions, mince pies (team Roifield on this one), stollen, urine and compost heaps. Roifield has decking in his back garden whilst Lucy admitted to a very large bush. Jane advises that there may be rats living under the decking so removing it needs the attention of her lurcher. Jane reckons The Archers team generally get gardening matters right; she has been listening for the last 15 years and it is now her little daily treat and then she mentioned many other podcasts. Jane predicts that the Titchenor story will explode at Christmas and she supports the existence of some villainy in the village but she does feel that having a baby is often not well portrayed on the programme. There seems to be some circumstantial evidence that Helen may not actually be pregnant – even though she has done two tests. The doctor did not do a test. There is a groundswell growing for Rex, although less so for Toby, but it does seem they may be around for the long term and the cooperation between the Grundy boys was noted. Everyone was hugely pleased to hear Jazzer back, especially in his double act with Jim. Lucy highlighted Joe’s comments on Rob’s faux behaviour as a member of the landed gentry as she and Joe are as one in their recognition of class differences. Millie Belle had a full update of online activities with a lot of positive comments about developments including Jim and Jazzer whilst Yorkshire Tea was discussed at length. Millie herself gets deliveries of tea direct from Sri Lanka – another place that I have enjoyed visiting. The writing desk turned up again in the Tweet of the Week. Bridgend is in Shropshire says Lucy (more often found in mid-Glamorgan) whilst Blairgowrie is in Scotland to give a “B” place, north of the Border. Kosmo On this week’s episode we have calls from: Paul Roome who’s got his calendar out Witherspoon who gets Jazzer in the psychiatrist’s chair Goddess Deeva who has a wish for Helen and Yokelbear who’s worried about the unbridled hand of capitalism. Dum Tee Dum Episode 78 – Calls and Callerinerers

Lucy had good reason for not being her usual organised self so emulated an impala leaping around between subjects which made the podcast even more entertaining than usual. The monologue did major on teeth and geese, and she accurately replayed the worst successful job interview in history. Lots of predictions this week – the Sterlings do not return but the Grundies move to Grange Farm as caretakers; Roy gets together with either Lizzie or Kirsty; although the betting is on Kirsty (aided by Fallon and Kathy who knows about violence at the hands of Owen King) sorting Rob with a Christmas termination of the baby for Helen before Kirsty settles down with Tom. Roifield is predicting that DTD will soon be starting a TV channel. Technology was discussed at length as no iphone can detect Rob’s edging and anyway a deleted video can always be recovered and mobile phones have undermined popping round to see people – which still happens in The Archers. But Lucy is wrong on mobiles – IRL when I was at work my wife always complained that I never answered my mobile – because that would be the day it ran flat! Our hosts took their traditional break for Camp Coffee (Roifield) and Yorkshire Tea (Lucy). This weeks callerinerers Jan from Can who’s got her ire up Emily Thomas who thinks mustard yellow is the colour of evil Miss Mid City who thinks Rob’s pulled a clever move Jo Jo Sexy Heels who can see light at the end of the tunnel Jacqueline Bertho who can see a new couple on the horizon Witherspoon who thinks David needs to get some backbone Andrew Horn who thinks Heatherpet was treated badly And Aunty Jean who’s not sure Helen really is pregnant The post Dum Tee Dum Episode 78 – Calls and Callerinerers appeared first on DumTeeDum.

Dum Tee Dum Episode 77 – Nigel – Graham Seed

Nigel’s voice returned to our ears as Graham Seed joined our DTD hosts. Lucy’s monologue concentrated on the mystic powers of ginger biscuits which had circulated among the Ambridge residents this week. Lucy beautifully questioned Graham who commented that Nigel was a rounded character that involved a lot of his own personality and then replayed his own death scene and murder at the hand of David. As for Lizzie dallying with Trade! There remains huge public recognition of the loss suffered as well as the resulting publicity. The influences of William Smethurst and Mary Wimbush were mentioned as was Tim Beecham. Millie Belle is in the USA meeting TA/DTD correspondents. Watch out for dumtee d’infants taking over the world. Dum Tee Dum Episode 76 – Tweet of the week

DTD opens with a royalty free rendition of Happy Birthday for Joe Grundy. It concludes with Lucy awarding Roifield “Tweet of the Week”. Squeezed in between are new callers and emailers. Common sentiments include a belief that Helen will get sectioned, Pip is unfairly hated (mainly because she is not the real Pip) and that Christine’s historic contributions are not recognised. Next week Graham Seed from Brookside will be on the podcast. Kosmo On this week’s show we have calls from: Sean Geraghty who thinks Dusty Substances is indulging in a double entendre Lady Garf Garf who thinks Rob’s planning something with Borsetshire Blue Mary Darby who thinks Roif did a cracking job Witherspoon who wants to talk about nocturnal aneurisis Yokelbear who’s cross with Jill Paul Roome who’s cross with Lucy Goddess Deeva who’s cross with Bert Candida Beeching who’s got some small geraniums Jacqueline Bertho who’s all pipped out and Jennifer in Exile who’s wearing a Suffragette sash. Dum Tee Dum Episode 75 – What did happen last week?

Who knew? The world’s problems can be solved, according to Lucy courtesy of Pip, with a tuna pasta bake! Rob knows how to turn a local organic farm shop into a world dominating chain of supermarkets, by dropping the local, organic and farm products. It was a quiet week as the new scriptwriter bedded herself in with Joe’s tomato plants. And it was equally boring, according to Larkin, in 1955! Various comments were made about some turgid writing this week. Dusty Substances thinks the geese will be an opportunity for optimism over the next few weeks with an inevitable cock fight between the geese and the turkeys on the local dining tables come Christmas. For Lucy’s benefit Smethurst’s book confirms (from Godfrey Baseley himself) that Ysanne Churchman died as she had been attempting to convince cast members to join a trade union to get union pay rates. Lucy did not mention that Tom Forrest’s omnibus commentary was replaced for a while by Lizzie. The over emphasis on The Archers themselves and Brookfield is now placing unreasonable strains on the structure of the serial and was the subject of much comment, the balance reflecting the village has been lost. Millie Belle popped back from a gig down under and asked online posters to be nice to each other which was echoed by Roifield. Kosmo On this week’s show we have calls from: Dusty Substances who has a little glimmer Witherspoon who’s in a state of grace Andrew Horn who’s been playing archers bingo Glyn Fullelove who is not impressed with Usha Paul Roome who goes wittering on about Derby County Catherine Baigent who wants to clean Neil’s face with a spitty tissue. Dum Tee Dum Episode 74 – Kat Brown and Cat Brown

Parakeets rule – listen to DTD for an explanation! Lucy and Roifield are joined by Kat Brown of the Telegraph and her cat. Their discussions gave proper consideration to the ill treatment accorded to the Lilian / Matt relationship which was peremptorily ended rather than handled with a decently treated story. This chat also brought to mind that perhaps Paul was a proto-Rob creation (similarly Jean Harvey was a proto-Lynda Snell). I can clarify that Jamie is apprenticed to Isaac on the Berrow Estate, not Mike Tucker (which is odd because Ed is having to trim the estate hedges in lieu of rent on his land). Attention briefly turned to Marvel super heroes on which Kat is also an expert. Kat did not mention her new boots but did consider the entire podcast worthy of a Bafta. Calls covered sounds – Rob’s unpleasant chuckle, the pigeons, the lack of a boiling kettle; the lack of a housing crisis; plus Rob and Helen of course. Roifield has heard mention of Jamie’s share of the Bull which Kosmo missed completely. Probably drowned out by the sound effects. Millie Belle had technical problems so is missing but on the website forum Goddess Deeva keeps creating new ways for Rob to die. Dum Tee Dum Episode 73 – The aftermath

Long BH edition this week to address some more difficult issues which have appeared in The Archers this week and consequently the humour content is well down on the norm. Kenton first – the belief is that he is in need of counselling for a mental illness which will take a long time to repair but quite possibly a wave of a magic wand will right matters in days – which would undermine the wonderful portrayal to date. Next Rob and Helen – was Helen drugged?; just drinks and self loathing thinks Lucy. Much concern that BBC did not give any warnings of injudicious content. Lucy considers that Helen’s report of her vulnerabilities effectively gave Rob the green light for his actions. Given Rob’s virulent attack on Jim, Pat’s conversion to Team Rob following their kitchen discussion seems highly unlikely to everyone. Finally Pip’s abrupt employment volte face was typical of how not to handle a story line – we all know the production team can do better. And two people resigning their jobs within days seems against the odds. Roifield can count to 100 in German whilst I side with Miss Mid City over the overuse of Italian this week. And can I say that Susan feels very proprietary over the shop – and her work is part paid for the management and Post Office aspects. Kosmo On this week’s show we have calls from: Blithe Spirit who wants a word with Radio 4 Dusty Substances who remembers Farmageddon Jacqueline Bertho who’s ruined her porridge Yokelbear who wants to talk about warnings Catherine Kavanagh who’s upset Witherspoon who’s being washed away by a tropical storm Cheeahs who knows why Helen had Henry Ms Alliance who has questions for Pat Catherine Baigent who’s wondering about storylines Goddess Deeva who’s had enough of reality and Miss Mid City who thinks its elitist. How Jamaica Conquered the World The small island of Jamaica has forged a new type of empire, an intangible realm of which there are no physical monuments. There is no official political or economic sphere of Jamaican influence but when it comes to popular culture its global reach is immense, far exceeding the reasonable expectation for a nation of just over 2.7 million people. For a nation that gained independence from the British only 50 years ago, Jamaicans have left their mark on music, sport, style and language around the globe and have become an international marker of ‘cool’. Jamaican music has colonised the new and old world alike, its athletes break world records with impunity and youngsters the world over are incorporating Jamaican slang into their dialects. Despite this the country has reaped no economic reward in return, unlike empires of old, and Jamaica still remains an economic pygmy. Jamaican influence has unconsciously spawned creative innovation around the globe and to this day it remains a country to be studied, celebrated, and demystified. Through the help of linguists, artists, musicians, designers, sports personalities, and historians we take a closer look as to how Jamaican culture conquered the world. Hosted on Acast.
