Animated August 2025: Pom Poko (1994)

To end Animated August 2025, we take one last look at Studio Ghibli. The company is synonymous with Hayao Miyazaki for good reasons but today, we will look at one of Studio Ghibli's biggest driving forces; Isao Takahata (1935-2018). A mentor to Miyazaki, Takahata's movies were more experimental and slow-paced, and among his most notable works was the 1994 environmental fantasy movie Pom Poko. Animation is a highly flexible medium of filmmaking that allows for anything at all to exist in a movie. It also reveals a lot about the people who work on it through their brushstrokes, styles, techniques, and so on. Animation truly has limitless potential. In this series, Tony will explore some of the great animated classics that  defined animation for generations, as well as those that may not have received the cultural praise they deserved but were still technical achievements on their own. Here's to all the animators of the world! Check out Tony's Letterboxd pages for more reviews: Tony: https://letterboxd.com/LePetitAntoine/ Do you have any suggestions? Is this movie a copycat of the Studio Ghibli formula, or is it its own thing? Is the English dub better than the Japanese dub? Tune in to find out... Animation is a highly flexible medium of filmmaking that allows for anything at all to exist in a movie. Animated August 2025: Suzume (2022)

On the third week of Animated August, we will be looking at Suzume, the third entry of the Disaster trilogy that shares no continuity with the other movies so it's safe to watch it on its own. Join Tony as he dives deep into the reality behind the disaster movie Suzume. This episode may contain mild spoilers.
