Marty Lurie: The San Francisco Giant’s Man Shares the Dream
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Just as the San Francisco Giants had an unlikely start to the 2014 World Series after winning the Wild Card entry, radio producer and host Marty Lurie began his incredible career from surprising roots. Marty produces and hosts the Giants pre- and post-game radio shows, and has become an icon in the field of baseball broadcasting. The exciting story of how Marty became a prominent broadcaster is as engrossing as that final game against the Kansas City Royals. After all the trials and tribulations of the season, the Giants managed to pull through with the win, and Marty’s story parallels the success of a team that worked harder than anyone imagined to rise to the top.
Marty began his path to entrepreneurship as a successful criminal lawyer. In his interview, he explains how his experiences as an attorney provided surprising preparation for his second life in the radio business. Recalling the game–changing moment when he decided to go into broadcasting, he describes the process of building his show from the ground up, starting at a small high school station in the Bay Area. He sought out local merchants and sold them advertising slots on his shows, while gaining popularity among fans and players for his wealth of knowledge and engaging interviewing style. Marty says has a simple explanation for why his show resonates with his audience: “I let the people talk – and I love the game.”
Marty grew up admiring Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. Today, he travels along their storied path and built a business that earns him recognition from the team and the fans that see him as a knowledgeable baseball historian. What drives entrepreneurs to turn their life-long passions and interests into successful, rewarding businesses? Check out the podcast for more stories from this iconic broadcaster.

ENTREPRENEUR radio
BEVERLY RAPHAEL: BARRIER BREAKER, CULTURE BUILDER
Beverly Raphael is the President and CEO of RCC Associates Inc, a general contracting firm. She is also the first woman to gain recognition as “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Wharton Club of South Florida. It is one of the most prestigious awards in our business community.
Beverly has earned it. When a sudden tragedy claimed the life of her late husband, she decided the best way to honor his legacy was by continuing his work and leading his construction company. There were many skeptics in the male-dominated construction business, but Beverly quickly defied expectations and earned the respect of her peers. She proved herself by solidifying RCC’s company culture. In the process, she expanded its customer base and tripled its revenue: RCC is now a 100+ million-per-year company.
Beverly turned her initial unfamiliarity with the construction business into an incentive for learning more, and surrounding herself with an experienced, supportive staff. “Company culture is key,” she tells us. “That’s why people stay.” Some of her core staff has been with RCC for over 27 years.
How do entrepreneurs push forward through times of adversity? How do they turn apparent disadvantages into powerful assets? Listen to Beverly’s revealing conversation with ENTREPRENEURradio for more insights.

Tere Blanca Success Broker
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Tere Blanca is the president, CEO and owner of Blanca Commercial Real Estate Inc. (a leading Miami-based commercial property real estate advisory services and brokerage firm). Among her many distinctions, she was named one of the “Top 25 Women in Real Estate” in 2013 by Commercial Property Executive.
Blanca’s career in the real estate field has deep roots. Entrepreneurial inspiration can be traced back to her grandfather (who was a prominent banker in Cuba before leaving that country in the 60s), and both her parents, (who were involved in real estate ventures in Puerto Rico). She has worked for over twenty years with some of to the top real estate firms in South Florida, which makes it even more remarkable that one day she decided to break away from the corporate world to establish her own company.
In her revealing interview with ENTREPRENEURradio, Blanca talks to us about the tragic accident that suddenly took her mother’s life. It caused Blanca to reconsider her career and ask herself a question every entrepreneur should consider: “If you think you’re going to be doing something five years from now, what’s keeping you from doing it today?” She discusses how she managed to start her own company while keeping the good will of her former employers, and the tactics that helped Blanca Commercial Real Estate Inc. flourish during the 2008 real estate crisis.
Tere Blanca is a perfect example of how a successful businessperson can daringly transition away from the corporate world into their own exciting territory, while keeping their connections intact and even collaborating with their former companies. Founding For Founders: Bob Fitts and the Start-Up Expo
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
How can we leverage our own knowledge and experience to provide learning opportunities to other people on the entrepreneurial path? For Bob Fitts, the answer was to create SUP-X, the Start-Up Expo. SUP-X is a large-scale convention for entrepreneurs being held on February 16th and 17th at the Broward Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Bob joins the hosts of “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind” this week to discuss his own experiences as an entrepreneur, details of the convention, and what inspired him to put this kind of event together in the first place.
Bob started his career as a real estate developer, working with some of the biggest firms in the country and climbing the corporate ladder. He realized that he wanted to branch out and do something on his own, and soon discovered the world of angel investors and start-up communities; namely, the Gold Coast Capital Venture Association. As an investor, Bob found his passion in helping to be the driving force behind creating new businesses. “I was just looking for fun, interesting things to do and ways to meet people…so I went to a meeting and I was kind of hooked,” he says in his interview on ENTREPRENEURradio. Today, he runs the nonprofit group and has been producing events for them for almost a decade. SUP-X is just the latest in a long list of Bob’s accomplishments as an investor and event producer.
SUP-X will focus on the entrepreneur, according to Bob, but there will be space for the investor as well. There will be seminars and keynotes throughout the two-day event that apply to both sides of the coin. The main aspect of the convention that distinguishes SUP-X from other events like it is its exposition floor; start-ups can enter their business into a contest, and the top choices will be given booth space at the exposition. ENTREPRENEURradio is proud to be a media partner at this event. We encourage you to register for the convention online and attend! (add link to registration) For more on the event, listen to Bob Fitts’ featured interview on “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind.”

Vicente Fernandez: An Unexpected Version of a Family Business
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Vicente Fernandez loves sports: playing them, watching them, and writing about them. He’s also a young entrepreneur whose mastery of social media technology gives him an insight into an untapped opportunity for sports reporting: he created SportsManias, as a Twitter-based content aggregator that provides up-to-the-minute sports news and reporting. The concept was to create a “one-stop shop” for the diehard sports fan that would be continually updated, rather than daily or weekly like a newspaper. “It’s kind of like a Huffington Post for sports,” he says, providing a broader distribution for writers from local papers and local teams. On this week’s “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind” on ENTREPRENEURradio.org, Vicente Fernandez describes the challenges of designing, financing and scaling a social media sports news outlet.
Vicente founded SportsManias when he was eighteen, and he had an unexpected co-founder – his mother, Aymara del Aguila. Her idea was to create a platform for diehard fans. “We kept talking about it,” he says in his interview with ENTREPRENEURradio. “I really got to thinking about what was out there in the market and what wasn’t out there, and where we could fill a hole.” Many people wondered if the decision to partner with his mother would create an additional level of stress for the venture. But for both of them, their relationship is a unique competitive advantage. “We’re able to be very transparent with one another due to our closeness.” No matter what they disagree on, he explains, they’re able to reconcile and compromise, because at the end of the day, they’re mother and son, and “that relationship is never going to break.”
Vicente and his mother are working together to build an enterprise that combined their individual skill sets and are redefining the sports media industry. For more on Vicente’s story, listen to his featured episode of “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind,” streaming now on ENTREPRENEURradio.org.

David Redlich: Envisioning The Internet for Small Business Commerce
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Entrepreneur David Redlich is a pioneer in the application of the internet for online commerce. In 2004, along with his partner AND co-founder Matt Kuttler, their forward-thinking mindset allowed to create a business that leveraged the capabilities of the Internet before its full potential was understood and harnessed.
ReStockIt currently sells over 200,000 products on their site. It began as an office supply retailer, but quickly grew to include many other necessities, such as janitorial supplies and electronics. David’s logic in selling so many diverse products is that customers will come for one product, and stay for the rest: “To us it’s an acquisition play. How do we get more customers and get them into the database so we could get more business,” he reports to ENTREPRENEURradio. His strategy of creating a “one-stop shop” for any and all business needs demonstrated steady sucess, and ReStockIt.com was purchased in 2013 by Acme Paper and Supply Company.
ReStockIt.com earned recognition, including South Florida Business Journal “Business of the Year” in 2008 and 2010 and was a finalist, along with his co-founder for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. His entrepreneurial approach of “high tech/high touch” business strategies is an essential element of his entrepreneurial mindset.
David’s philosophy is to think big, and that forward motion from large-scale planning pays off. He had a grand vision of Internet’s capabilities when he launched ReStockIt, and as a result, he was well positioned to have an early advantage when the marketplace consciousness emerged. To learn more about David Redlich and ReStockIt.com, listen to this week’s episode of Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind on ENTREPRENEURradio

Dr. Mindy Cassel: Your Mission Drives Your Success
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Many people enter the world of entrepreneurship in search of financial success. Psychotherapist and social entrepreneur Mindy Cassel had an entirely different purpose when she founded the Children’s Bereavement Center with her partner Dr. Carol Burns. She wanted to help children struggling with grief, and to provide a way to provide those services on an ongoing basis without cost to the participants.
“When we started out, we felt that these services should be free of charge”, she explains, “Grieving people are often in the worst part of their lives, a critical juncture where they often don’t know their financial situation,” Mindy says in her interview.
She concentrated on her mission, to provide solace and healing to young people experiencing tragic loss. Mindy enlisted partners, sponsors and underwriters to fulfill this vision. She discusses her experience as an unexpected social entrepreneur in an interview with ENTREPRENEURradio’s “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind”.
Dr. Mindy Cassel created a self-sustaining not-for-profit built on partnerships rather than charity. Who are your natural partners for joining forces to fulfill a shared vision? Listen to her interview on ENTREPRENEURradio to find out.

Deborah Richman: Courageous Through Crises
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
When you build your own business for the first time, the business often becomes an extension of yourself. Many entrepreneurs find that their company becomes an integral and often central part of their lives; they cannot imagine what they’d do if they lost the business they’d worked so hard to create and scale. But sometimes, we do not have control over whether or not our business remains under our control. Losing control of the company you created makes an entrepreneur reach deep inside to redefine their unique competitive advantage. Deborah Richman joins us on ENTREPRENEURradio to discuss what she learned to do– and stop doing– in order to remain resilient in the face of this kind of crisis.
Deborah Richman’s early success was as the CEO and founder of Deborah International, but in a fallout with her partner, she lost control of the company she had invested so much personal capital to build. “You just have to reinvent yourself and move on,” she says in her interview on Inside the Entrepreneurial Mind” “You have to just dust yourself off, brush yourself off and get up.” Deborah threw herself into new projects, building on the product, client and distributor base she knew so well. Following the advice of a mentor, an artist who encouraged her to create a product of her own, she designed the successful Lady In Red fragrance line and rebuilt her company as DKUSA.
Resilience is a core competency for an entrepreneur. “You can always move on past mistakes or crises, no matter how bleak your prospects may seem,” she affirms. For more on Deborah’s insights and experience, click on her episode of “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind,” on ENTREPRENEURradio.org.

Steve McKean: All-Encompassing Entrepreneur
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
Steve McKean defines an entrepreneur as “someone who sees an opportunity or a problem to be solved and marshalls the people and resource to build a product or service to solve that problem.” Over an expansive career, he embodies that definition. His most recent success, Acceller, was built entirely for the purpose of solving a problem: Acceller negotiates bills with major telecommunications companies for their customers. He’s also working with two additional companies built on the philosophy of solving problems for customers: BillShark, a personal finance company similar to Acceller, and a robotics software company that focuses on private data.
Once you’ve gotten the entrepreneurial bug, it’s hard to resist. Starting his career as a CPA, Steve McKean soon dove into the world of entrepreneurship. He’s operated a Dairy Queen franchise, advised financial services ventures, and explored the complex world of technology and engineering. He describes his approaches to entrepreneurship on this episode of ENTREPRENEURradio’s “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind”.
“Entrepreneurs”, according to Steve McKean, are “always looking to find a better way to do things.” To learn more, listen to his featured episode of “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind” on ENTREPRENEURradio.

David Koretz: Catching the Wave
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
When you come up with an idea for a business, how do you know when it’s the right time to bring it to the market? David Koretz, the CEO of Plum, learned a great deal about the challenges of timing throughout his career. He joins us on ENTREPRENEURradio’s “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind” to discuss his entrepreneurial experience and how he learned to be resilient despite struggles selling an idea.
David Koretz began his career very young. He was fourteen when he started his first business, which was a venture into home automation technologies. He was successful, but unable to scale the business. “I just didn’t have the sophistication…to see what was coming,” he explained. As he grew into a more knowledgeable and experienced entrepreneur, and explored other areas of futuristic home automation technologies, he recognized that even though the ideas he was bringing to market were valuable, the timing in the marketplace wasn’t ripe. When he did find the right balance, his sale of that company for $100 million was the pay-off. Finding the intersection between good ideas and good timing is the key to David’s success.
Currently, David is waiting for the right time to release his newest venture, Plum, a connected device that he says will revolutionize the wine industry. David has a track record of great ideas, and his entrepreneurial instincts are fully engaged. His timing is even better now that he has grown as an entrepreneur. JOHN OFFERDAHL: GRIDIRON GRILLER
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
How do you define entrepreneurship? Having an “entrepreneurial spirit” can mean different things to different people. John Offerdahl, the CEO of Offerdahl’s Cafe Grill and former Miami Dolphins linebacker, has a succinct philosophy of entrepreneurship: someone who works to find the diamond in the rough. In his interview with ENTREPRENEURradio, he says that when starting a business, he and his wife “entered a world of crap [and]…dug our way out to find the jewel.” That jewel was Offerdahl’s Cafe Grill, which serves bagels and healthy barbeque items seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – a surprising endeavor for a former football player to undertake.
Opening a restaurant is difficult no matter who you are, but John Offerdahl experienced some rather unique branding issues from the get-go. Originally, Offerdahl’s was a bagel shoppe in South Florida, which presents its own challenges, but ever since re-branding into a “healthy grill,” the business has faced problems with convincing customers to try foods outside of the bagel. But those challenges don’t deter Offerdahl from finding success. “Every day since we opened our first business, it’s been challenge after challenge – but opportunity after opportunity,” Offerdahl says. He had a dream to be the “Gridiron Griller,” and he’s made his dream a reality through dedication to his vision.
John Offerdahl’s story reminds us that we should follow our dreams, even when they seem unachievable. It also reminds us that we should never discourage others from doing the same. To hear more of John Offerdahl’s entrepreneurial journey and the lessons he imparts along the way, listen to his interview on ENTREPRENEURradio.org.

MARCELL HAYWOOD: VISIONARY WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
When you’re faced with a challenge, what do you do? Do you step back and let someone else take care of it, or do you take a deep breath, devise a solution and step forward to take leadership? Marcell Haywood, the CEO of Dirt Pros, would pick the latter. Haywood talks about the importance of rising to the challenges of entrepreneurship in his interview with ENTREPRENEURradio.
Haywood saw opportunity when he analyzed the maintenance industry business. The maintenance business did not properly service clients for whom environmental sensitivity was a major issue. Seizing the initiative, Haywood founded Dirt Pros and is now a leader in high quality maintenance services in Southern Florida, with a vision for taking his company beyond the borders of his home state. “We believe that every contract with our organization is a better contract than if it were to be provided by anyone else in our industry because we’re an organization that legitimately cares about our staff, our employees and our customers,” he offers.

ALBERT SANTALO: HEALTHCARE FUTURIST
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
How is social media changing the way you run your life? Albert Santalo sees social media technology is the platform that will change the way healthcare works in America. He is the founder, president and CEO of Care Cloud Corporation, one of the most promising companies of 2014, according to Forbes Magazine. Care Cloud provides practice-management software to healthcare providers, providing a fast, secure link between doctors, patients, medical records and payments.
Santalo says: “The most complex system that exists in the world is the human body. The second most complex thing is the U.S. healthcare system. We deal with both.”. The medical practice of the future will benefit from the efficiency provided by social media, the cloud, and apps. With Care Cloud, Santalo predicts, wasteful spending in the system would be significantly reduced
Albert wanted to create an enduring, world-changing company ever since he was 5 years old. His parents, Cuban immigrants who arrived to the United States in the ‘60s, inspired him not to worry about failure, and to embrace American opportunity.
His experiences have led to develop a personal philosophy of entrepreneurship that contains four core values: “Aim to amaze. Integrity above all. Constant innovation. It’s all about the customer.” He defines the entrepreneur as someone who has passion, attention to detail, and the ability to deal with complexity and chaos. That’s also a fitting description of Albert himself. His vision may soon determine how all of us will connect to physicians, hospitals, and insurance carriers. Lori Anne Wardi: “Domain Diva”
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
How does disrupting the status quo open new frontiers for the creative entrepreneur? Lori Anne Wardi found her answer. She is the vice president of registry services at Neustar Inc., a pioneering provider of real-time, cloud-based information services and analytics. It is an extension of her work at .Co, the company she co-founded to manage the .co domain name extension, (the first serious competitor for .com.)
Lori Anne talks to us at ENTREPRENEURradio about the entrepreneurial journey that took her to the frontlines of technology. A Cornell grad with a Masters in Human Resource Management, she had a great career with Goldman Sachs as an executive coach and trainer. In 2000, she decided to jump into a consultancy business – but the impact of September 11, 2001 in the New York business community forced her to re-consider that route.
As she pondered her options, she was developing expertise on Internet domain name purchases, with a business card proclaiming the title “Domain Diva.” Lori Anne came up with business ideas, purchased the domain, and then sold it to those interested in carrying through with the concept. She started gaining traction when she turned a $1,200 purchase into an $81,000 sale.
Lori Anne’s internet savvy led her to co-found .Co. There, she was part of the team rebranding the domain name extension as more than an address, but as a selected destination for innovative businesses. Lori Anne saw the value of .Co as being a community rather than a commodity. The .co extension is positioned to attract innovative start-ups and risk-taking business creators who enjoy the message of an alternative address. “Vision drives the future,” she tells us.

JAMIE GROOMS: BIOTECH LEADER
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
How do you know when changes in the market help you pivot to a better solution?
Ask Jamie Grooms. He is the CEO of the Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research, a non-profit organization that assists new companies during their creation process. The institute leverages $2 billion of research funding to assist companies that will impact the global marketplace with scientific breakthroughs.
A major innovator in the biotech field, Jaime moved from a position of middle management at the Tissue Bank of the University of Florida, to become the CEO of Regeneration Technologies virtually overnight. That company, now known as RTI Biologics, is a global leader in implants from donor tissue.
“It’s not what you plan; it’s what you can see as an opportunity,” Jamie notes. His original plan was to use advanced bone implant technology in the sports medicine market, but sales weren’t matching expectations. So he re-examined his assumptions and pivoted into the spinal implant market, where his product was greeted enthusiastically on the basis of a strong pre-existing. This allowed him to make a greater impact on the market, which led to huge profits for Jamie and his team.
Success and expansion come with their own challenges. Jamie admits that at first he had trouble adapting to his sudden CEO status, (a position he defines as “the ultimate middle management service provider.”) He sought recommendations for an executive coach who taught to trust and develop his own brand of leadership. His ability to learn and adapt keeps Jamie at the frontline of the biotech field. What challenges are you facing as your brand expands?

ROB GROSSER: NAVIGATING THE MORTGAGE MARKET
Episode in
ENTREPRENEUR radio
What do you do when the business models that brought you success are no longer the best road map in a new environment? Robert Grosser, president of Luxury Mortgage Corporation, a private company that provides a wide-range of mortgage products and services for homeowners, has been building businesses since college. He seeded the funding for a store for his parents from the proceeds of his college t-shirt sales. In 1984 he launched a one-man shop called Ready Funding which he grew into Cityscape (the company that he took public in 1994).
After a short time away from business in the late ‘90s, Grosser returned to entrepreneurship with renewed vigor to helm Home Star Direct. That company merged with Luxury Mortgage in 2009, with Grosser presiding.
Through market expansions and contractions, including two different mortgage crisis, Grosser succeeded by remaining credible and accountable to his clients. “Plans change, so it’s very important to communicate whys, hows, risks and the rewards in a consistent manner,” he asserts. Continuous change and risk-taking are part of the entrepreneurial life, but he cautions: “You have to know the ramifications of the risk that you’re taking in order to properly say you’re a risk taker.”
He talks to us about the entrepreneurial values that he upholds at all times, as well as the family history that serves as backdrop to his early interest in commerce. Grosser finds inspiration in that history. He describes the lessons he learned watching his grandfather’s wholesale wicker-and-rattan business in Brooklyn; and of the retail store he helped open for his parents. How does your family history of business shape your approach to risk? Download this podcast right here for more of Grosser’s experiences.

“Integrity is what you do when no one is watching.” For Steve Smith, Chairman of Credential Check Corporation, that’s more than a saying. Integrity and a solid, values-driven character are at the core of his successful entrepreneurial experiences.
In addition to his leadership role at Credential Check (a company that provides comprehensive pre-employment screening services), Steve is the President of Summit Group Holdings. He also co-founded Transnational Security Group, and served for over 20 years as chairman/CEO of Smith Security, the 35th largest security company in the US.
Steve has a powerful work ethic. His involvement with those organizations such as World Presidents’ Organization (WPO) and Chief Executive Officers’ Organization (CEO) demonstrate that commitment.
In his conversation with us, Steve reveals how his work ethic influences his approach to building a business: from his choice of business partners, to his balance of personal and professional life. The wide-ranging interview also describes what he’s learned about hiring, building, and scaling a business.
Steve’s entrepreneurial character is represented in the concept of CBA (“Conceive; Believe; Achieve.”) He says: “If you can conceive it, and if it’s believable, you can achieve it – if you execute it. It’s all about execution.“ In what ways does your own character shape your entrepreneurial trajectory?
