State-sanctioned incitement to hate fueled the 1994 Rwandan genocide, where in just 100 days between 800,000 and 1,000,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu were massacred with guns, machetes, and nail studded clubs. It is estimated that up to one million individuals participated in horrific genocidal acts of killing and looting. Referred to as the most efficient genocide in modern times owing to the speed and scale of the killing, and the “intimate genocide” due to the close nature of the killing, the Rwandan genocide involved many, was swift and was particularly brutal.
