E: 120 Cushings/PPID: 2026 Update

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Learn how to assess the bigger picture when caring for a horse with Cushing’s disease: coat and shedding, muscle, appetite, feet, feeding, and response to care alongside ACTH testing with your veterinarian. In this episode, functional equine nutrition practitioner Audrey McLaughlin explains PPID and shares her approach to forage-first equine nutrition, mineral balance, and practical management. She walks through the difference between body condition and muscle condition, why protein intake deserves attention, and how to review a feeding program before adding more supplements. The discussion also covers pergolide, appetite changes, herbs and nutritives, homeopathy, complementary therapies, and seasonal care, including a published case series on homeopathic ACTH and Quercus robur.  Audrey shares her practice observation that nutrition and mineral-balance changes, followed by veterinary reassessment and retesting, sometimes lead to medication being reduced or discontinued. T In this episode: What changes in the brain and pituitary with PPID Subtle signs that deserve attention before the classic shaggy coat ACTH interpretation, seasonal context, and the separate question of insulin regulation Foundation-first feeding: forage, salt, protein, minerals, and extras Muscle preservation, ingredient review, and why Audrey is careful with supplemental iron Pergolide, follow-up, and the message that medication is not failure Audrey’s recommendations for individualized herbal, homeopathic, and complementary support Seasonal priorities Five common mistakes that can leave important needs unaddressed Join Audrey: Metabolic Horse Class, October 14, 2026, at noon Eastern. E: 119 Equine Metabolic Syndrome: What to Feed and Why

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show What should you feed a horse with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS)? Before buying another metabolic supplement, let’s look at the whole diet: hay, pasture, feed, treats, and everything else going into the bucket. In this episode of the Equine Energy Medicine Podcast, Audrey McLaughlin walks through her anti-inflammatory forage diet approach to feeding metabolic horses and easy keepers. Learn what insulin dysregulation means, how it relates to laminitis risk, and why a low-sugar feed label leaves important questions unanswered. We cover: • Evaluating forage, pasture access, and the complete daily ration. • Managing calories while accounting for protein, muscle, and mineral needs. • Looking beyond “low sugar” at ingredients and amounts fed. • Checking for overlapping nutrients across supplements. • Audrey’s supplement screen: acceptable ingredients, a useful purpose, and meaningful amounts. If your feed room keeps collecting supplements while you’re still unsure what your horse actually needs, this episode gives you a practical place to start. Join Audrey for the Metabolic Horse Class on Wednesday, October 14, at noon Eastern. Class details, individual nutrition consultations, and Minerals and Metals Mane Test information are listed below. E: 118 EPM in 2026: Treatment vs Recovery

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Here is the question I get asked about EPM four times a week: does he need another round? And here is the question almost nobody asks: what is actually limiting this horse right now, and which part of his recovery has never been addressed? Those two questions send you down two completely different years. One is a loop. The other is a plan. In this episode, Audrey McLaughlin, Functional Equine Nutritionist, takes apart the assumptions that keep horses stuck in the medication cycle after EPM, and lays out what an organized recovery actually looks like on top of appropriate veterinary treatment. In this episode: Why a positive blood test means exposure, not active disease, and the three legs an EPM diagnosis actually stands on What to ask your vet for, and why writing down the neurologic grade today pays off two years from now Improvement versus complete recovery, and what the ten to twenty percent relapse figure really tells you in both directions The difference between a horse who declined and a horse who never fully came back, and why they need opposite responses What is usually left after treatment: residual deficit, lost conditioning, compensatory patterns, nutritional gaps, and proprioceptive confidence The honest vitamin E conversation. Test it, do not guess it, and why it is correcting a nutritional status rather than treating the disease The six step recovery order of operations applied to a neurologic horse, with minerals doing the work of nerve conduction and muscle contraction What the Minerals and Metals Mane Test can and cannot tell you about an EPM horse Why you do not rebuild a neurologic horse out of a bucket This episode picks up after veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Nothing here is an argument against treating EPM. It is what belongs on top of that treatment. E: 114 Insulin Resistance in Horses: The 2026 Update

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Most horse owners hear insulin resistance and picture a fat horse with a cresty neck. But body fat is not the definition, and lean horses can have insulin dysregulation too. In this episode, we are breaking down what the term actually means in 2026, why low NSC labels are not enough, and the ten questions I mentally run thru on every metabolic case. E: 113 What Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Actually Means

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show What does anti-inflammatory nutrition actually mean for horses? In this episode, I break down how anti-inflammatory equine nutrition became oversimplified into a “fix it with a scoop of...” mentality—and why that misses the point entirely. We’ll talk about the real role of forage, feed ingredients, fatty acid balance, sugar and starch, minerals, protein, gut health, metabolic health, and targeted supplementation. You’ll learn why inflammation is highly individual from horse to horse, why ingredients still matter, and how to build a nutrition strategy that supports healthy inflammatory regulation without turning feeding into a rigid recipe. E:: 110 Topline Truth: Why More Protein and Amino Acids Won't Fix It

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Your horse still doesn't have a topline, even after switching feeds and adding an amino acid supplement. Audrey breaks down why topline loss is rarely a protein problem, why sodium and mineral status matter more than most owners realize, and why chronic inflammation can block muscle building no matter what's in the bucket. E: 103 The 2022 HTMA Study: What It Actually Found, What It Didn't, and Why It Matters

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Today we're tackling one of the most frequently cited studies in the world of equine hair tissue mineral analysis, or HTMA. If you've spent any time researching HTMA, you've probably heard someone say: "That 2022 Journal of Equine Veterinary Science study proved hair mineral testing doesn't work." And honestly, that's one of the reasons I wanted to record this episode. Because after reviewing more than 10,000 mane mineral analyses over the years, I think it's important that we discuss what the study actually found, what it didn't find, and perhaps most importantly, whether it was even asking the same question that many HTMA practitioners are asking. Now before we begin, I want to be very clear. This is not an episode about dismissing research. It's not an episode about defending HTMA at all costs. In fact, I agree with some of the concerns raised by the study. I think it highlights important challenges within the industry. Tune in for more. E: 100 The Horses That Stay Sound Longer

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Today, we are talking about longevity. About what it actually takes to build a horse that ages well. About why some horses peak later instead of declining earlier. And about what owners who have these horses did differently -- not just in their senior years, but years before anyone was thinking about senior years. Because the horses that stay sound longer? They usually aren't lucky. They're built that way. And it starts way earlier than most people think. E: 99 The Feed Room Is Creating Half the Problems

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Walk into the average horse barn and tell me what you see in the feed room. Bags of complete feed. Probably a senior formula. Maybe a ration balancer sitting next to a fat supplement sitting next to a joint supplement sitting next to a hoof supplement sitting next to something for ulcers. And somewhere in the back, a bucket of electrolytes that nobody's really sure if they still need. And the horse? Still ouchy. Still slow to recover. Still metabolically weird. Still not quite right. The owner? Trying harder. Buying more. Doing everything they've been told to do. Here's the thing nobody in the feed aisle or the feed store is going to tell you: The feed room is probably creating half the problems. Not because you're doing it wrong on purpose. But because the entire conventional approach to feeding horses was built around calories, weight, and convenience -- not around equine physiology. Not around what actually drives inflammation. Not around what horses were designed to eat. Today, we're going to get into all of it. What's hiding in your feed room. Why your horse can look totally fine on the outside and still be struggling at the cellular level. Why supplements keep stacking up and nothing ever really resolves. And what it actually looks like when you feed for physiology instead of feeding for appearances. Stay with me. This one's going to shift some things for you. E: 97 Light as a Biological Signal: What It Means for You and Your Horse

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Light is one of the most overlooked inputs in both human and equine health—and it may be one of the most impactful. We spend so much time focusing on nutrition, supplements, and protocols… but the body responds to its environment first. And light is a primary signal that helps regulate circadian rhythm, hormone patterns, energy production, and nervous system balance. In this episode, I sit down with the creator of Visum Light to explore how targeted light exposure can support the body’s natural rhythms—and why this piece is often missing when progress feels stalled. We also break down what actually matters when it comes to light devices, including key differences in wavelength, intensity, and delivery—especially as more products enter the market. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” with nutrition but still not seeing the results you expect, this episode will help you understand why. E: 96 He Was Already on a Forage-Based Diet… So Why Wasn’t He Improving?

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show If your horse is already on a forage-based, low inflammatory feeding program and you’re still not seeing the changes you expected… you’re not alone. In this episode, we walk through a common scenario: a horse on a well-structured nutrition program that still appears “stuck.” Instead of immediately changing the feed or adding more supplements, we explore another layer—how feeding strategy, daily routine, and overall management can influence how a horse utilizes nutrition. This episode focuses on four key areas to review when progress stalls: • Feeding patterns and alignment with natural grazing behavior  • Daily movement, turnout, and routine  • Mineral balance within the total diet  • Overall feed inputs, including forage quality and storage Research from the National Research Council highlights the importance of forage-based nutrition and feeding management in supporting digestive health and normal behavior patterns. Guidelines from the American Association of Equine Practitioners also emphasize the role of turnout, movement, and daily living conditions in overall equine well-being. The goal of this episode is not to diagnose or treat any condition, but to provide a broader framework for evaluating nutrition and management—always in collaboration with your veterinarian. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” and still not seeing the results you expected, this conversation will give you a new way to assess what might be missing. Circadian Rhythm in Horses: The Missing Link in Metabolic Health, Insulin Resistance & Weight Loss

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show If your horse is on the “perfect” program — low sugar, balanced minerals, anti-inflammatory diet — but still struggling with weight, insulin resistance, or metabolic issues… you may be missing one critical piece: Circadian rhythm. In this episode, we break down how light — specifically timing of light exposure — acts as a primary regulator of metabolism. Human research shows that delaying morning light exposure is associated with higher body fat, independent of diet and exercise. And horses, as highly light-sensitive, seasonal animals, may be even more impacted by circadian disruption. We’ll cover:  How light controls metabolic signaling in the body   Why stalled horses and delayed turnout may contribute to metabolic dysfunction   The connection between circadian rhythm, insulin sensitivity, and fat storage   A new framework: the 4th pillar of metabolic health in horses  If you’ve been doing everything right and still not seeing progress… this episode will change how you look at your horse’s environment forever. E: 92 Soy as a Feed Ingredient and Protein Info You Need to Hear

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Recently there was some push back around soy as an ingredient and more over as an amino acid requirement in feed and or ration balancers. The good ol “show me the scientific evidence” came right out. So lets talk about soy as an ingredient and why it matters even for horses that don’t have a direct sensitivity or allergy for soy. Today we will talk through a few different aspects including soys anti-nutrient properties, glyphosate issues, and the all important “what about amino acids then?”   Find all the Resource Listed Here: linktr.ee/equineenergymed Audrey is not an MD or DVM and has never implied or claimed to be either.
