Mon. 7/6, 7p: On Espejos de Aztlán, New Mexican author Dr. Lillian Gorman shares insights from her research on the 4 th of July Fiestas in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In a re-evaluation of the Fiestas cultural richness and its deeply rooted anchor as querencia for many northern Nuevomexicanos. We will chat about these Fiestas as a “love of place” and as a "contestatory space" at the same time, hosted by Cristina Baccin . Dr. Gorman is currently Director of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Program and Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona. We will discuss how this tragic incident is related with our nation’s history of slavery, intentional segregation and institutionalized racism. Dr. Nancy López, Professor of Sociology is the Director of the Institute for Study of “Race” and Social Justice and an Africana Studies Faculty Affiliate at the University of New Mexico. We will also talk about steps each of us can take to build and establish a just society and secure everyone’s human rights, especially in New Mexico.

Mon. 4/13, 8p: On Espejos de Aztlán, we honor Dr. Mari-Luci Jaramillo ´s life and contributions to New Mexico, our nation and the world. A native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, who advocated for civil rights become the first Latina to hold a United States ambassadorship. Throughout her career as a teacher, scholar, community leader, and writer, she focused on education, bilingualism and Latina´s rights. Her tireless efforts left a legacy of essays, awards, photographs, and books that are now housed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Taio Taylor just made it to a world competition in Belgium where she will be representing the U.S. and New Mexico. Her family, Chacho Taylor, Robel Taylor, and Tatiana Taylor join us to talk about their experience in BMX bike riding and other projects.
