ExCITe Goes Back to School by excitecenter

While many universities slow down during the summer months, Drexel is just the opposite. For Part Three of our Learning Innovation series, we'll look at a handful of the engagement opportunities The ExCITe Center offers for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and beyond. ExCITe's Program Coordinator Jillian Reilly and Associate Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research Jaya Mohan join.

Making Culture is the first in-depth report on K12 Education Makerspaces nationwide. The report, authored by ExCITe Director Youngmoo Kim, Kareem Edouard, Katlyn Alderfer, and Brian Smith, examines the culture behind makerspaces and the impact it can have on the students within these spaces. Postdoctoral fellow and lead researcher on the Making Culture report Kareem Edouard sat down with us to share his findings. We also spoke with Matt Riggan, co-founder of The Workshop School in West Philadelphia. The Workshop School is an alternative high school with a focus on collaboration, building, and hands-on learning. Matt talks about how the culture of The Workshop School shapes his students, and how he and his team are making an effort to create a space that is welcoming and hospitable to all. Meredith Martin of the Science Leadership Academy Middle School talks about her students' involvement with the Center (by creating their own podcast), four SLA Center City students reflect on their recently-concluded externships, and former ExCITe intern and current Drexel sophomore Vriti Khurana talks about her position at the Center and how it's informed her academic experience. Today on the ExCITeCast we talk to Corey Arnold and Erin Truesdell of the Entrepreneurial Game Studio, we talk about their upcoming game they are making in collaboration with the National Science Foundation Hacktion. Hacktion is a mobile game that uses augmented reality to teach about hacking, cyber security, and cyber literacy.

Today everything we do is connected to the internet, we talk to Director of the Auerbach Drexel Cybersecurity Center Steve Weber and president of the Drexel Cyber Dragons Colbert Zhu about what is cyber security and how you can learn and practice it.

In February of 2016, the Director of the ExCITe Center, Youngmoo Kim, began collaborating with composer Lembit Beecher and librettist Hannah Moscovitch to create Sophia’s Forest: an opera that focuses on the interior world of a 9-year-old child, Sophia, who has recently immigrated to the United States. To evoke Sophia’s thoughts and memories, Youngmoo, working with architect Simon Kim and engineer Mark Yim of the University of Pennsylvania, created nine tree-like, sound-producing sculptures as part of the opera’s set. In this podcast we talk with the composer, Lembit Beecher, and two ExCITe Center collaborators who were integral to the sculptures' function, Rich Vallett and Scott DelPrato.

An estimated half of all small businesses in the United States have little-to-no online presence. So, in collaboration with Rebrand Cities, the ExCITe Center will be partnering with the West Philadelphia Corridor Collaborative and the Lancaster Avenue 21 business association to help Philly entrepreneurs get their businesses online. This podcast explores ExCITe's engagement with Rebrand Cities, talking to John Maeda, a key collaborator in the Rebrand Cities project and the Global Head of Computational Design and Inclusion at Automattic; Brandon Morton, the ExCITe Center's AppLab Manager; and Kwaku Botang, the Executive Director of the Lancaster Avenue Business Association.

Saturday, June 17 will culminate in the debut performance of a brand new, original instrument for two ExCITe Center residents. Artist in Residence Peter English and PhD candidate Jeff Gregorio have been working hard for the last year to develop Drumhenge — a circle of 16 drums that have been modified with magnets and code to give off a more electronic, eery sound.
