An extraordinarily helpful attribute, if you’re on a path of healing and growth, is self-honesty. It’s also one of the most difficult. In fact, it’s nearly impossible, especially at first, to look at ourselves honestly. I know what you’re thinking. Why, I’m honest with myself, definitely. No, you’re really not. None of us are, a lot of the time. People don’t generally have the kind of self honesty I’m talking about, even me, and even you. So why is that? Doesn’t it seem like human beings, with the intellect to build computers, compose symphonies and perform microsurgery, would be able to think clearly about ourselves?

But if you had asked me about the meaning of the words I read from the Torah, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you. The other day one of my Facebook friends posted something that really caught my attention. She said she was puzzled by so many of her colleagues talking about needing to be grounded so as not to pick up negative energy from their clients. She posited that either there was something seriously wrong with her for not having any such experience, or her colleagues were really weird…

One of the things we tend to find confusing is when gifted people behave poorly. For example, a wildly popular entertainer who is suspected of child abuse. Or a charismatic and effective political leader who can’t seem to keep his hands off his secretary. Or a spiritual figure who has anger issues. Or a record breaking, world famous sports figure who behaves like an ass…

What, you don’t know whack-a-mole? It’s that carnival game where a mole pops up from one hole, you whack it, and another mole pops up from another hole. It might get a bit frustrating, but that’s just part of the game, so it’s fun. And because it’s a game, when you’re done, you’re done, and you can have a hot dog. Or a tofurky dog, if you prefer. In real life, I suppose if you’re a professional exterminator, you can also go about your mole whacking without getting upset. It’s nothing personal, and after all, a job’s a job, and when it’s done, it’s done. You can have a beer. Or an ale. Or some water.

Although my intuitive counseling clients come from several faiths, the biggest majority consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.” According to recent surveys, something like 60% of people in the US identify themselves that way. But it’s interesting to me that for whatever reason, the biggest percentage of my spiritual but not religious clients began as Catholic. The ones who no longer go to church, say that they were raised in the Catholic faith, but either felt it didn’t do much for them, or that they were decidedly turned off by either the doctrine, or the behavior of the clergy, or both…

So what's the deal with the ego? Freud talked about it. Spiritual teachers from the East talk about it. Your girlfriend talks about yours. Is your ego a problem? Maybe. Probably. He's the deal. Your ego is part of the standard equipment you got assigned when you first showed up here, in Earth School. You got a nice new body, in your choice of colors. You got an intellect to think up stuff, you got emotions to know when trouble was coming, and you got an ego. And they said, Here ya go, Pilgrim, there's your Earth Suit, see what you can do that.

Being in judgment makes us feel a little more secure about ourselves, momentarily. Here’s what else it does: It creates a false sense of separation between ourselves and others It puts us squarely in the ego and the intellect, and takes us out of our heart Causes a fixed attitude that cuts off the flow of love Sends a message to the universe that we’re not ready to move forward spiritually Makes it impossible to offer genuine compassion to others Makes it impossible to receive love and compassion It can lead to depression, and ultimately to physical illness Listen to learn more about what it is, why we do it, and how we can stop!

I’ve gotten a really good look at arrogance in my life, to the point where I can feel it almost immediately whenever I’m in it, and of course spot it in other people even more easily. So what exactly is arrogance, and why would we entertain it in the first place?

I’m going to recite a very old joke that my father used to tell. A fine Jewish doctor had done very well in his practice for many years, and to reward himself, he went an bought a new Jaguar sports car. Maybe he felt a little Jewish guilt for spending so much money, so he went to the Rabbi of his orthodox synagogue, and said, Rabbi, I’d like you to make a blessing on my new Jaguar. The Rabbi said, “I know what a blessing is, but what’s a Jaguar?”

I believe that love is pouring into humanity from above. I use the word “above”, but you could say from God, or from whomever or whatever your favorite substitute word for God is. And I believe that this love from above can be received and experienced and lived in by each of us. I believe in love from above because I perceive it, experience it, and feel it. Not on a constant basis. But when I stop the mental chatter, drop into my heart, open, and receive, it’s there. You’ve heard me talk about this before, if you listen to my podcast. But I’m pointing this out now, in this way, because I want to emphasize the immediacy, and the availability of this experience. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in a good mood, or feel guilty about something, or just won the lottery. Love is here, and waiting for each of us, right this moment. It knows us each in minute detail. And it wants to be received and experienced, whenever we’re open. How can you become more open, right now? Try this…

The word Processing has recently come into common parlance with a new meaning, having to do with our human response to life. Maybe you’ve heard it used that way, or used it that way yourself. I suppose processing started out as a manufacturing term, perhaps in the mid 1900s. Processing milk to make butter, or processing iron to make steel. More recently it was adapted into computer terminology. You may have seen a message on your screen that says “processing…” For computers, it means, I’m taking in that information, crunching the numbers, and will have an answer for you when I’m done. Lately, we humans say, “I’m processing that information”, or simply, “I’m processing.” So what does that really mean?

Recently someone asked, “Why is it so difficult to follow my gut?” No other information was provided with the question, and here’s what I answered. Your “gut” is actually the wrong place to look for intuition, contrary to popular belief. Your gut will tell you things like, “I’m scared.” That’s good information, and important to know. But it’s not the same as intuition, or inner knowing, which is what I suspect you’re really asking about.

Clearing is a new idea for most people, and new ideas often seem strange. People used to feel strange about things like proper diet, flossing, and exercise. Over time we’ve learned that these things drastically improve our quality of life. As many of us are discovering, clearing offers the same advantage. So, what is clearing, and what is it that’s so important for us to clear?

I talk for a living, at least a lot of the time. But I also do a lot of listening. I listen to my clients – to what they say, and what they don’t say. And it’s my job to listen to what their higher consciousness is saying about them, and what my own guides are saying to tell them. Or not to tell them.
