Yes, the lockdown has been hard on all of us - no matter where in the world. And for many artists, it has brought challenges. I wondered though, what some of the benefits of the lockdown were and how I can use what I learnt from the lockdown as an artist in my daily life.  Here's four interesting things I learnt, insights I've had because of the weird situation 2020 has put us in.

In this interview, Zara and I talk about what it takes to be a multifaceted artist and her journey that started with dance and developed into writing. What’s interesting is how she pursues both of her passions, sometimes intertwined, and sometimes separately. The results are beautiful. Listen to this interview to gain insights, inspiration and ideas for your own journey in the art world.  A dancer and writer, Zara Jayne Marimuthu lives for art through words and movements. At the age of five, she started her foundation in ballet but has also explored in other styles like hip hop, dancehall and latin. She has trained in Melbourne and Urban Dance Camp in Germany. Since coming back to Malaysia in 2018, she has been in commercials and music videos such as Toyota Vios and Zee Avi’s, ‘Who Are U’ music video. Her first published work was for a local Malaysian newspaper in 2014 and she has written for indie and university publications in Melbourne such as The Bowen Street Press Review and RMIT’s The Catalyst. Butterflies in your stomach, sweat outbreak, heart pounding? Know that feeling? Yes, you're probably having stage fright. Something many artists feel.  While it is completely natural, it is also tiring, anxiety producing and it feels unnecessary.  If you feel like overcoming stage fright is something you'd like to explore, feel free to listen in to have a better understanding of what stage fright is, where it comes from, and how you can better deal with it! It's a process that many artists go through, and everyone has a different journey. There are a few tips and tricks however that every artist can implement to help become more comfortable on stage. A lot of them happen through simple realisations, that I talk about in this episode. Some are based on personal experience, others on research. Hope you enjoy!

As artists, the imposter syndrome really hits us. We make ourselves vulnerable when we share our art, and this can be really great. However, when we are unable to deal with criticism or fear, then this can lead to ourselves being stuck in the imposter syndrome. Paul, a musician, educator and world traveller, who is now retired shares his story of ups and downs in his life as a musician. Originally from Ireland, he has lived around the world in Egypt, India and now Malaysia. He has been a college lecturer, teacher, music therapist with prisoners, music librarian and has performed at some of the biggest events as well as on the street.  This is the interview is one that every artist needs to hear.  A real, authentic story, that shows that no matter how dark life gets, things can change in the most unexpected ways. A journey that starts as boy in the 1960s to a mission to having an impact in the education system and bringing people closer to music. Paul is an artist that has seen a lot and to this day still plays and makes music. I saw him playing at a restaurant, and I can just say - you know a real passionate artist when you see one. And so after I mustered up some courage, I went ahead and asked him for an interview. The rest is history.
