EP 139: True Hedgers vs. Speculators
Guest:
Craig VanDyke
Senior Risk Manager at TopThird Ag Marketing
Record Date: 7/11/17
Traders,
Today I spoke with a man who learned the business through the fundamentals. He grew up in rural Indiana and instead of getting into farming, he decided to help farmers & ranchers hedge their crops & livestock. His name is Craig VanDyke and he is the Senior Risk Manager at TopThird Ag.
I spoke with Craig to get a perspective that I believe is very important in our industry…understanding the difference between true hedgers vs speculators. I have been a speculator my entire career, and have never really thought too much about true hedgers or producers as I have mostly been an SP and Bond trader. So today I dove into the world of commodities with Craig, and we spoke about working with the actual hedgers.
He discusses how a trade decision is made when he works with a farmer hedging their soybean crop. We discussed how he helps farmers and ranchers manage their risk and manage their emotions. We chatted about how the AG industry has changed over the years and why it’s so important for farmers and ranchers to adapt to ever changing market conditions.
Finally, he tells us what trends he is seeing in the Agriculture products. Craig is a really good guy who provides us with fantastic insight into the commodity markets. I truly enjoyed speaking with him and I know you will enjoy hearing from him.
Takeaways:
True hedgers vs. speculators
Working with actual hedgers (farmers, producers, etc.) How he identifies risk, manages, and executes a position with futures and options.
Managing emotions when trading and working with actual producers/hedgers. This business is about relationships. Protecting the equity in a producers operation.
The changes he’s experienced in the industry over the years. Quality, speed, technology, efficiency as producers are different these days.
The trends that Craig is seeing in USD, Wheat, Corn, Soybeans, and U.S Agriculture.

Traders,
Today I spoke with a man that regularly gives his insight on CNBC about financial markets. He has been an analyst and a portfolio manager. He’s currently the president and Chief Investment Officer of Aviance Capital Management. His name is Chris Bertelsen.
Chris does not focus on Futures, but as a long time futures trader I love to hear what other market participants think about the current theme of the market. This provides a perspective of what large portfolio managers are thinking. Today I asked Chris where he thinks we are in this Equity bull market. You may be surprised where Chris thinks we are.
We then talked about growth in the US and how the Bond market is calling the Fed’s bluff. We spoke about the FANG Stocks and their impact on the S&P. He gives us a foolproof plan for the government to create stimulus.
Finally, we discussed the flows between sectors and he explains what to watch for. Chris is a really smart guy who I really enjoyed speaking with and I know you will enjoy hearing his insight on the markets…as usual thank you all for listening and please enjoy this episode.
Take-a-Ways:
He says we’re in the 4th inning of this bull market, or the middle stages. Explains where he sees it going from here.
Chris talks about growth in U.S using inflation rates, unemployment rates, and fed rate hikes. Bond market calling fed’s bluff.
Big tech stocks (FANG) are leading the market’s higher when other sectors aren’t. He says be careful.
He presents a foolproof stimulus plan for govt. Deregulate!
Gives the flows between sectors right now, and explains what to watch for.
Rapid Fire:
How has your trading evolved?
It’s become more selective. Focus on what you know and understand.
The moment trading just clicked for you?
He looked at the extremes in energy, and found that going against all the big players worked out for him.
1 source you spend your time on?
He watches the flow from sector to sector.

Russ and I talked about the importance of the pursuit of your happiness and settling for a job that you are not happy doing. We discussed how vision pursue measures a persons performance mindset and he breaks down the symptoms of having the average mindset. I have to say a lot of this hit home with me, because I’ve worked very hard to improve my personal mindset weaknesses over the years. Russ talked about creating brain balance and finding the answers internally.
We then got into some practices you can do to work on your mindset. Finally, since Russ works with professional Athletes in the NFL and MLB, we discussed the similarities & differences between a Traders mindset and a professional athletes’ mindset. In all of my years as a trader the most important asset you have as a trader is your mindset. There is no substitute to a good mindset. I believe that the best traders can trade any type of strategy as long as they have the proper mindset. I am taking a challenge by working with Vision Pursue for 60 days after this episode airs.
I am going to pay for the first 5 traders that email us at info@futuresradioshow.com after this episode to do it along with me and then come on futures radio show in 60 days to speak with Russ and I about how it has benefited us. Russ is a an awesome guy who is doing something that I think the world needs. I guarantee you will love this episode. As always thank you all for listening and please enjoy this episode.
Take-a-Ways:
Russ defines “Performance Mindset”. How they measure mindset (the way someone experiences the external world). He Breaks up typical workday into 4 categories. How much of your day is…
Stressful and annoying
“need to do it to get what I want”
Escape, relief, or shutdown (drink, watch t.v., social media)
Feeling good
Reveals the symptoms of having the typical mindset…
Re-reading because mind wanders
Hard to be present
Difficult to sleep
Sunday afternoon blues
Creating brain balance. Finding the answers internally.
Explains Vision Pursue’s brain balance training:
Life paradigm: What is your primary focus?
Where I’m at now (A) – Where I want to be (B).
Problem w. this thinking is B is promise land, happiness is in the future…not at A.
Mindfulness: ability to be in present moment. Focus on process not the result.
Meditation: daily exercises.
Emotion: what is and why is there an emotion?
Tells us similarities and differences between traders and athletes. Training the mind w/ the 4 elements above.
Explains that emotions are messages. Let it pass and get back to process or current moment. Separate, embrace, evaluate.
