Get Offset

With the recent announcement of the limited edition boygenius signature Broadkaster Jr. by Gretsch—which sold out, by the way—another entry has been added to the relatively short list of women, or, in this case, groups of women with signature guitars.  It’s a list that has expanded in the past decade or so, and it includes Yvette Young, Chrissie Hynde, Emily Wolf, H.E.R., Susanna Hoffs, Lari Basilio, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, and Courtney Love. And, of course, what is perhaps the most unique signature model named for a woman–the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent.  Even though the list of women with signature guitars has grown over the years, I think there’s still a lot of opportunity for brands to honor some of today’s most exciting, up-and-coming guitarists who just happen to be women.  Let’s talk about some women who I think should get a signature guitar. I based this list mostly on vibes. Okay, getting serious, yes, this list is largely artists of whom I’m a personal fan. But I also thought about musicians who are gaining popularity, brands that don’t presently have a lot of signature models, period, guitar models that have been done to death—so I won’t be suggesting Strats of Teles—and, finally, I tried to hit a few different genres. But, me being me, most of these artists fall fairly squarely within quote unquote indie rock genre. Support Get Offset by... I’ve said before that one of my biggest musical influences, period, is Ryan Adams. I suppose I should probably say “was” Ryan Adams. From the time I was 12 until probably 2015 or so, I was an enormous supporter of his music. I had all the albums, some of the books, a lot of the 45s, I even went to his art show at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in 2009. I still have a print of one of this paintings hanging on my wall. But when the New York Times published a Me Too article about him in 2019, I just…stopped listening. This week, I dive into the rise and fall of Ryan Adams and how he may have spent his ninth life in 2019. Or, who knows, maybe he has another one on the way. Support Get Offset by... Last week, Spotify made the news in a bad way.  Long story short, they announced changes to their payout structure that will most certainly demonetize an enormous amount of artists. “Can we just stop pretending women care about guitars?” “I get the same vibe from some women pretending to be into Warhammer, that you are larping, that you like pretending to be into guitars, not because of what the guitars actually mean to you, but rather how it means you are perceived in the sub-culture, as the cool guitar gurl, guitars become a means for attention.” Those are two separate comments I got on a video this week.  I want to share these not because “Woe is me, people are mean on the internet.” I want to share them because, troll or not, there are people in this world who really think like this. What in the world is Live Nation up to? The live event behemoth recently made a colossal announcement—that they are ending the decades-long practice of taking a cut of artist merch sales at their venues, rolling out over the next few months.  And though this announcement has been widely cheered and celebrated, it’s not the concession everyone thinks that it is.
