The genres of musical/comedy both feel like a bit of a stretch for this eccentric 2005 movie.  Starring Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Steve Buscemi, Mandy Moore, Mary-Louise Parker, and MANY other recognizable names - this is one that left us scratching our heads wondering how the heck so many people signed on for this movie! In The Life of David Gale, Kate Winslet is a reporter getting an exclusive scoop on the events that lead up to a man landing on death row. The catch? He has spent his entire career as an anti-death-row activist. The 2001 romance drama, Iris, captures the life of novelist Iris Murdoch between flashbacks of her youth and her present-day battle with Alzheimer's.  This movie's poignant and effective tug on the heartstrings is no doubt a testament to the stellar cast including Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, and Penelope Wilton.  This film is melancholy, but it packs a punch in just over 90 minutes. Buckle up for possibly our favorite episode of the season reviewing A Christmas Carol (... :The Movie) and Buttons (.... :A Christmas Tale). One is a classic holiday story, with a ~twist~ including mice, distractingly poor animation, and a UK chart-topping single by Kate Winslet herself!  The other is like watching a community theater production - what year is it? why are the background characters mouthing the words of lines that are not theirs? it's a musical?! Kate only has one line and then ISN'T IN THE MOVIE?!  In other words - it's wholesome but not good and we cried laughing while recording the episode and you absolutely don't want to miss it! Little Children (2006), starring Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Connelly, and Noah Emmerich, is a drama/romance/thriller (?) following an unhappy pair of suburbanites engaging in an affair while the community reacts to a recently released felon.  While we felt this melancholy plot plodded along and went down too many side avenues to be a big hit - you should still tune in to hear our full review and how Little Children ranks out of all 46 Kate movies! Mary and the Witch's Flower, released in 2017, surprised us with its cute animation and fun plot! Kate voices one of the antagonists in this anime film directed by Oscar nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi. This week we're reviewing THREE children's movies starring Kate Winslet! The first is Pride, a BBC TV movie released in 2004. This movie boasts a large cast with Helen Mirren, Rupert Graves, Martin Freeman, and Robbie Coltrane starring alongside Kate! While this just seems like a lackluster attempt at recreating The Lion King, we did love seeing real nature shots and hearing about how they made this live-action movie.  The second movie is The Fox and the Child featuring those two titular characters and no one else in a feel-good kids movie that Anne describes as "like a hug."
