In Conversation with Dawn Butler

Join Brent Central MP Dawn Butler and Good Law Project Executive Director Jolyon Maugham for a discussion of Butler’s new book ‘A Purposeful Life’. As the first African-Carribean woman to become a Government Minister in this country, the lessons in this book are the culmination of a lifetime of breaking records and speaking up for some of the most marginalised people in society.  Butler has changed countless lives through taking on corruption in institutions such as the Met Police and the NHS, as well as in the corridors of power themselves. In 2021, she was famously thrown out of the House of Commons for calling Boris Johnson a liar. This podcast is an opportunity to hear Dawn talk candidly about what motivates her to keep going in the face of an increasingly hostile political landscape and to learn from and be inspired by her experiences and achievements.

Is the UK Shutting Down Dissent?

The Government has changed the law to make it easier for the police to restrict where and how we protest, and it’s set to do so again in the coming months. For many, freedom of assembly is essential to a healthy democracy.  Is this the end of protests? Are the new policing laws an unprecedented power grab or a necessary corrective to protect public life? When the issue is as serious as the climate crisis, is there an argument for civil disobedience?  Our panel answer these questions and more: Ian Browne, Good Law Project’s legal manager and host for the event Roger Hallam, activist and founder of Extinction Rebellion Parm Sandhu, former Met Chief Superintendent  Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, author and founder of Women in Leadership Tom Wainwright, a leading lawyer in the field of protest law at Garden Court Chambers This was first broadcast as a livestream on the 15th June 2022.
