Eric C. Gould Spanish Expressions For Photographers
Episode in
Gould: Tech View Now
The question of the day: Do you need to speak Spanish to get great photos in Cuba.
Absolutely not. I have found that by making eye contact with my subject, pointing with my hand to my camera and asking “OK" while nodding my head with affirmation is all that is needed. That said I believe knowing a few Spanish words or expressions does not hurt. So, please see below. The English expression is followed by the Spanish. There’s an audio version and written one too. Maybe load the audio on to your mobile phone for some down time listening on your flight over to Havana. However, do not feel obligated to know even one Spanish word - a smile and a nod of the head goes very far.

A startup called DNATrek is creating a solution to address the food traceability market; its DNATrax technology literally makes it possible to trace items like food products through the supply chain. This is crucial for both validating the quality and authenticity of premium products, as well as performing diagnosis and damage control in emergency scenarios such as widespread poisoning or disease outbreaks. Originally developed at Lawrence Livermore Labs as a mechanism for enhancing the country’s bio-defense and bio-detection capabilities, the technology that became DNATrax was licensed to DNATrek founder/CEO Anthony Zografos for commercialization in key markets—namely, agriculture, health care, and food industries, to mention a few. The latter holds the most opportunity for the technology, as the food traceability market alone is estimated to be a 14 billion dollar market.

Tech View Now: Lockitron Founders Interview
Episode in
Gould: Tech View Now
This is an interview with the founders of Lockitron: Cameron Robertso and Paul Gerhardt at their offices in Mountain View CA on 9/2/14.
A revolution is happening -- right before your eyes. Not a political revolution, or even a social revolution, but rather an “access” or security revolution.
The product is called a smart lock, and it’s brought to you by Lockitron, a startup company founded by two very smart people, Cameron Robertson and Paul M. Gerhardt. They saw the revolution in thermostat controls for the home, in security cameras and remote video devices, and realized that something was missing: access. While running and securing the home was hi-tech, getting into the home was still in the prehistoric era, technologically speaking. And, since we use our smartphones for everything from getting the latest news to measuring how far we are from the green, why not, they thought, use it to get into our homes?
So Cameron and Paul came up with an idea: Why not start a new revolution: the aforementioned access revolution. And, since we’re going the revolutionary route, why not be truly revolutionary? Instead of limiting ourselves to just locking and unlocking doors, why not take the entire process a step further and integrate a smartphone that can open anything? First, they needed funding.
Cameron and Paul’s original idea was to raise capital to fund their innovation through crowdsourcing. But then, being the innovators that they are, they quickly realized that there was a better way. They launched lockitron.com to let people see how the Lockitron works, and then (they hoped) they would acquire the necessary funds by allowing pre-orders. It worked. In one 30-day period, 14,000 Lockitrons were pre-ordered, at $179.00 per unit. Clearly, in the case of Lockitron, seeing is believing. And with the huge market for locks and locking devices (estimated to be $3.6 billion by 2019), the sky’s the limit.
Your first impression might be that the Lockitron is a security device. It’s not. It’s an add-on to the lock you already have. The security is provided by the lock itself; however, since Lockitron is activated remotely and connected to the Internet, Lockitron utilizes the same cryptographic protocols as your online bank. And, since it works with deadbolts, it just may provide the incentive you need to upgrade that all-too-easy-to-break-into lock on your back door.
As mentioned before, Lockitron has a menu of features that go above and beyond just locking and unlocking doors. For example, with its integration with the Pebble Smartwatch, a smartphone app is not necessary to use Lockitron. Now, your door can unlock as you approach it. Think about that the next time you are walking to your door with two armloads of groceries. Lockitron will also enable you to unlock your door to let guests in if you can’t be there to let them in yourself, and alert you in real time whenever someone enters your house or even knocks on your door. Business owners will be able to control access to their offices with Lockitron, and know who is entering where and when.
With Lockitron’s API, integration to other programs beyond Pebble (for example, a home security system) is only a matter of time. Lockitron’s usage will only be limited by the imagination of developers. And, while the big guys are also in the smart lock business, they are limited by how they can offer and price their products, due to existing channel agreements -- not to mention fear of cannibalizing their existing “dumb lock” markets. Lockitron is uniquely positioned to offer its smart lock over the Web, and is dedicated to one thing and one thing alone: making the Lockitron the best and most versatile smart lock on the market. At a price point that’s right for the homeowner, a product that is positioned to exploit the heretofore untapped commercial market, and an e-commerce strategy that has already proven successful, Cameron Robertson and Paul Gerhardt’s Lockitron may be unlocking and locking a door near you in the near future.
