An Interview With Daniel Chernilo - Grasped in Thought

Daniel Chernilo is a professor of social and political thought at Loughborough University in the UK. Dr. Chernilo has a new book called Debating Humanity coming out in early 2017. We discuss human nature, essentialism, intersectionality, and the relationship between philosophy and sociology. You can purchase Dr. Chernilo’s book here and here. Here is the blog post I referenced in the discussion. Apologies for the disparity in audio levels. I’m working with new equipment and haven’t used Skype for interviews before, so I’m still experimenting with my setup. You’ll catch a bit of my breathing here and there (sorry for that). Things should improve as I continue these interviews and settle into a good audio setup.

The Grasped in Thought Podcast Episode 3: A Discussion on the Is-Ought Problem, among other things (10.10.15) - Grasp...

This is the third episode of the podcast. I’m joined by my friend Josh for a discussion about the is-ought problem. We end up going down some rabbit holes, but that’s how unscripted conversations tend to go. I hope you enjoy this episode. (I mistakenly said Rescher has over 400 books, when he actually has over 100. He’s published over 400 papers.)

The Grasped in Thought Podcast Episode 2: Moral Error Theory (10.1.15) - Grasped in Thought

This is the second episode of the Grasped in Thought Podcast. The topic of this episode is moral error theory. I hope you enjoyed this episode. I’m getting used to the solo podcast format, so it’s still a bit awkward. Also, in the future I’ll have co-hosts and people to interview. I apologize for the slight static in my voice when you turn the volume up too much; I was experimenting with a new hardware setup which didn’t turn out very well. It shouldn’t be noticeable if you keep it at a moderate volume, and it won’t happen again in future episodes. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions about how to improve the podcast. Thanks and enjoy! Further Reading: J.L. Mackie (Intro level classic defense of the error theory): Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong Richard Joyce (Intermediate intro to the evolution of morality): The Evolution of Morality Richard Joyce (Advanced defense of error theory): The Myth of Morality Richard Garner (Intermediate defense of error theory): Beyond Morality Richard Garner (Intermediate explanation of the argument from queerness): On The Genuine Queerness of Moral Properties and Facts (Advanced collection of essays on the error theory): A World Without Values Charles Pigden (Intermediate explanation of the doppelganger problem): Nihilism, Nietzsche and the Doppelganger Problem

The Grasped in Thought Podcast Episode 1: Moral Realism (9.20.15) - Grasped in Thought

This is the first episode of The Grasped in Thought Podcast. The topics of this episode are moral realism, its definition, and a brief argument from moral experience. In the future, the quality of the podcast should improve. This is my first time doing a podcast about anything, so the first few episodes are going to be a bit shaky. Hopefully you all enjoy it, despite my lack of experience. In future episodes I also won’t be alone, but I had some free time today to record this one by myself. Also, sorry for forgetting to shout out our first patron, thinkphilosophy.org. Make sure to check out her website and podcast. Further Reading: Alex Miller (Intro): Contemporary Metaethics: An Introduction. Paul Bloomfield (Advanced defense of realism): Moral Reality. Russ Schafer-Landau (Advanced defense of realism): Moral Realism: A Defense. David Enoch (Advanced defense of realism): Taking Morality Seriously. David Brink (Advanced defense of realism): Moral Realism and the Foundation of Ethics. Don Loeb (Advanced critiques of the argument I put forward in this episode): Gastronomic Realism A Cautionary Tale & The Argument from Moral Experience. Geoff Sayre-McCord (Intermediate critique of the definition of realism I put forward): The Many Moral Realisms.
