I help men heal both physically and emotionally from heart disease or heart attack. I can help YOU or a man in your life deal with recovery and rebounding from heart disease or a heart attack. Why just men you ask? Women experience heart attacks differently than men. I cannot speak from experience. Why do I think I am qualified? I am not a doctor. I am not a psychiatrist. "I am a Survivor!" "I Get It!"

Episode 9: Sandy Krupp - My battle with Heart Disease

Sandy's experience with heart disease began in January 2013. he found himself on the typical medical conveyor belt of heart disease treatment. Over a five month period, and a multitude of tests, it was determined that he needed triple bypass surgery. He was told that his family history of heart disease had led him to this. He accepted this verdict, went through with the surgery, and spent a week in the hospital recovering. His daughter brought him home the day he was released, and they stopped at the pharmacy to pick up the required prescription drugs. That began a period of time where he was dealing with the numerous negative side effects from all the medications. He took advantage of the time that he had off, and learned all he could about this disease. Over time, with what he learned, he was able to reduce, and eventually eliminate the multitude of prescription drugs that often create as many problems as they solve. Questions for Sandy: What roll does family history play in heart disease? How do you feel maintaining a plant based diet? What is your opinion on bread? What type of exercises or activities do you do that has been beneficial to you?  What do you do to manage stress in your life? What is the one thing you could recommend to my listeners that they could start to apply today? My biggest problem is snacking at night. What is your favorite healthy snack? Episode 8: Dr. Glen Livingston of "Never Binge Again"

Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's)  previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page.  You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV.  Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.  Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. Questions Asked: Why are overeating, stress eating, and binge eating so prevalent in our culture today? What makes you, uniquely qualified to comment? Is ending overeating complicated? How do you create your own food plan? What is your opinion about Bread? Is it really possible to “Never Binge Again™?” How can people learn more? What is the one thing you could recommend to my listeners that they could start to apply today? My biggest problem is snacking at night. What is your favorite healthy snack? Episode 4: "Private Members Only Facebook Support Group"

Why Heart Attack Survivors? I want to help men heal both physically and emotionally from heart disease, heart failure or heart attack. We can help YOU or a man in your life deal with their recovery and attempts to find their way back to their life, and themselves. There are groups available through local hospitals, most are free, but only last 4 to 8 weeks. They information tend to be very generic. These groups are often lead by psychiatrists or someone from the hospital staff from that department. It has been found that group of this nature, their average approval rate from participants is roughly 17%. I wanted more! I could have gone to group sessions outside the hospital put found them to be to generalized. The costs ranged from $45 to $150 per week, you would have to be concerned about weather and traveling to the meetings and if you were out of town you would have to miss the meeting all together. Besides, you would be limited to just one night a week, plus bad coffee. I wanted something more specific! I wanted the person leading the group sessions to be a heart disease survivor, someone who understands and “Gets It!”, and not be a doctor or a psychiatrist. Don’t get me wrong, doctors are vital and they can treat your condition, but they have no idea what you are actually going through. A survivor has lived it and gets it. The average approval rate from participants for survivor driven group sessions is over 70%. Then it hit me! Wait a minute! Why not me? I can be that person, the survivor, the one who “Gets It.” Little did I know, I had just described myself. I have been in the IT industry for 30 years and when I actually broke it down to what it is I actually did, I have been in the business of teaching and supporting people. That said, what kind of group do I want to create? I wanted to create a group that is easily accessible, from anywhere. As I like to say, “anytime, anywhere and any place! You could be on vacation, on a business trip and not have to miss the sessions. The group will be available 24/7, worldwide, to all paid members. Every Saturday afternoon, I would jump online from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm eastern, to participate in the discussions, answer questions and help keep the open forum discussions going. I want the group to be a community, to bring people together, to creating friendships, and bring in industry experts to answer some of our most pressing questions. I want to create an atmosphere that is inviting, informative and everything discussed will be relevant. If I am unable to get to your question during our Saturday afternoon session, email your question to me at jeff@heartattackcoach.com  and by the end of the day Monday, I will get back to you with an answer. How you participate is totally up to you. If you want to join just to listen and absorb pertinent information with regards to your situation, great. If you wish to partake in the discussions, we can’t wait to hear your views on the topics discussed If you want to tell your story that brought you to join the group, we wait with anticipation. This is going to be a place to connect with people just like you, dealing with similar issues as you are. Do you need to be the one suffering from heart disease to be a member? Absolutely not. We are here for the families, spouses, children, and extended families of the people suffering from the disease. Why just men you ask? Women experience heart attacks differently than men. I cannot speak from experience. However, a woman suffering from heart disease is welcome to be a member of the group. In the future, I would love to partner with a woman who suffers from heart disease, to provide the same support for women, and their unique experiences. Is there a charge to be part of the group? There will be a nominal monthly fee of $97/month to be a member. Why are you charging to be a member? This fee is necessary to make each and every one of us, including me accountable. This is a global service, available 24/7, worldwide. Come Join us! Create new friendships! We all have a lot in common! Go to Facebook and search for the “Heart Attack Survivors” Facebook Page and request to become a member and we will forward the membership package to you. If you find you would respond better in a one on one environment, book a discovery session with me and we will determine if you are a good candidate for one of my one on one coaching packages. What is a Discovery Session? A Discovery Session is the most powerful way for me to get to know you, and for me to listen and learn about what brought you to heartattackcoach.com and determine if you want to be helped, and if so, am I the right person to help you? During the Discovery Session, you have to open up and answer some really tough questions. You will probably hate me, get mad at me and you may even hang up on me. But in order to proceed you have to be fully invested and all in. Remember, it’s your future. If you are not honest with me, the only one who suffers is you. To book your Discovery Session, go to my website at www.heartattackcoach.com. Click on the blue banner at the top of my home page and it will take you directly to my automated online scheduler where you can choose the best available time that fits your schedule. Remember my daily motto - “I am not my condition, and though it is a part of me, it does not define me.  I am here for a reason”

Episode 1: "Common Terms Used Today"

For more details on "HeartAttackCoach.com" go to my website at www.heartattackcoach.com If you wish to contact me directly, feel free to do so at jeff@heartattackcoach.com. Please go to iTunes and leave a review. I would appreciate your honesty as it is the only way I can make any of the necessary changes to make my show the best it can be. Show Notes: What is your heart? Your heart is a muscle, not an organ. A normal resting heart rate for adult ranges from 60 to 100 beats a minute. Generally, a lower heart rate at rest implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness. A well-trained athlete might have a normal resting heart rate closer to 40 beats a minute. If your heart isn’t beating at the right rate or rhythm, they will first try with medication and monitor your progress. The medication often used are called Beta Blockers (aka blood thinners) Most heart attacks and strokes occur when the blood supply to your heart muscle or brain is blocked. This usually starts with the buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the inner lining of an artery. This buildup is called plaque. Plaque usually affects large and medium-sized arteries. Plaques can grow large enough to reduce the blood's flow through an artery. Where Plaque is most dangerous is when plaques ruptures and breaks free cause blood clots to form that can block blood flow to another part of the body. This is called an embolism. If a blood clot blocks a blood vessel that feeds the heart, it causes a heart attack. If a blood clot blocks a blood vessel that feeds the brain, it causes a stroke. Some people at high risk of heart attack, IF told by their physician will be told to take a low-dose aspirin (Baby Aspirin). Aspirin “thins” the blood and helps prevent blood clots from forming. So it some cases it does help prevent heart attack and stroke. That is why when you call 911, they will often recommend giving the person suffering the heart attack if they are able to take them, a couple of Aspirin to help prevent blood clots. The risks and benefits of aspirin therapy vary for each person. Aspirin thins the blood; but it can cause several complications. IMPORTANT: Medical Alert bracelet and/or chain. It can save your life Stents: A stent is a small metal mesh tube that's used to treat narrow or weak arteries. A stent is placed in an artery as part of a procedure called Coronary Angioplasty. Arteries carry blood away from your heart to other parts of your body and then back to the heart. Stents are used to restore blood flow through narrow or blocked arteries. A stent also helps support the inner walls of the artery. Stents sometimes they're made of fabric. Fabric stents, are used in larger arteries. Some stents are coated with medicine that is slowly and continuously released into the artery. The medicine helps prevent the artery from becoming blocked again. IMPORTANT: Medical Alert bracelet and/or chain Pacemakers: Slow heart rate First Pacemaker was actually used in 1952 and was an external device the size of a box of Kraft Dinner Today, size of a silver dollar / It is a battery-operated control unit (pulse generator) implanted under the skin in the chest area of your opposite dominant hand. Lead wire(s) are threaded through your artery to the chamber of your heart and is attached to the heart muscle and detects the heart rate and deliver small pulses of energy from the pulse generator to the heart. Surgery is invasive. Takes a few hours. New technology currently being tested, there is a AAA device and one the size of a vitamin capsule Pacemakers can prevent heart rhythms from going too slowly and can be used to coordinate the heart beats so that the top and bottom and left and right chambers beat in sync and helps the heart to pump more blood to the body. IMPORTANT: Medical Alert bracelet and/or chain Defibrillators Fast heart rate Was first used in 1791 after the invention of electricity to verify if someone was actually dead First Defibrillator was actually used in 1956 and was an external device the size of a shoe box ICDs (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators) reset the heart rhythm. A battery-operated control unit (Cardioverter) usually implanted under the skin in the chest area in the chest area of your opposite dominant hand. Lead wire(s) that are threaded to the chambers of your heart and attached to the heart muscle that detect the heart rate and deliver a shock to the heart to get it back into normal rhythm. ICDs are devices that send a strong “reset” signal to your heart (shock) when the bottom chambers of your heart (ventricles) are beating very fast or erratically.  These ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia) can occur without warning and are often fatal. Save the lives of patients who have fast ventricular arrhythmias. Patients who have significant damage to their hearts after heart attacks or poor heart muscle function due to cardiomyopathy.  These patients are at greater risk for dangerous ventricular arrhythmias and benefit from ICD implantation. Defibrillators rescue the heart from a rapid and confused heart rhythm which is usually fatal. Hospital version (adjustable between 50 to 360 joules) vs Portable version (200 joules) vs Implantable (250 joules) IMPORTANT: Medical Alert bracelet and/or chain In order to determine what type of device is appropriate for you, your cardiologist will need to determine what type of rhythm disorder you have and if you need treatment.  Rhythm Disorders: Rhythm Disorders can affect anyone, young or old. When athletes collapse on the field after practice, the culprit often is some form of heart rhythm abnormality. QMJHL tryouts – 16 year old collapsed Kris Letang from the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb 7th 2014 suffered a stroke at the age of 26. Further testing revealed that Letang, had a very small hole in the wall of his heart since birth. This small defect in the wall is present in all individuals before birth but seals shut in most people. It is possible that the hole in the heart led to the stroke. His treatment was to go with blood thinners.  Long Q-T Syndrome (LQTS)  LQT is a disorder of the heart's electrical system that can happen in otherwise healthy people. The space between the Q and the T (the Q-T interval) is the time between from one heart beat in the lower ventricles until the heart is ready for its next beat. If it takes longer than normal, it is diagnosed as a prolonged or long Q-T interval. It is possible for patients with this syndrome to have an ECG with a normal or borderline Q-T interval. People with this syndrome may only show during prolonged physical exercise, while experiencing intense emotion or when startled. LQT is often inherited and present from birth (congenital). LQT can also be caused by certain medications that prolong the Q-T interval and disrupt heart rhythms. Some people with LQTS often have no symptoms. If there are symptoms, they may include unexplained fainting, unexplained seizures, and abnormal rate and rhythm of the heartbeat (arrhythmia). If not detected and treated, LQTS can lead to sudden death in a small proportion of patients SADS – Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome is a genetic heart condition that can cause sudden death in young, apparently healthy, people. These conditions can be treated and deaths can be prevented. SIDS – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is caused by Long QT Syndrome IMPORTANT: Medical Alert bracelet and/or chain You only have 1 life and 1 heart, take it seriously. Without your heart there is no life.
