Smoke and Mirrors

In this week’s podcast, I talk about why some of the most contentious issues of our time, including transgenderism, race relations and energy consumption, are misrepresented or exaggerated through the media, and why we find it difficult to see through the smoke and mirrors. As we look at our TVs, computer screens and phones, our consciousness moves into the second dimension and we immediately constrict our view of reality. Lowering our state of consciousness in this way eventually takes it toll and we can begin to feel more anxious and fearful. This perpetual state of fear blocks us from accessing the wisdom and clarity of the higher dimensions. Whether we realise it or not, we are becoming multi-dimensional beings. This means we need to expand into the higher dimensions to support our ‘whole self’. We are unfamiliar with this new level of self-care, but just as we take steps to improve our physical and mental health, we must now learn to nurture our spiritual health. As we disconnect from the 2D ‘reality show’, we will begin to feel more connected, grounded and liberated and we will finally understand the meaning of being in, but not of the world. The Tesseract

In this week’s podcast I talk about the benefit of accessing higher dimensional consciousness. This concept is no longer spoken about only by spiritual teachers, it has become a mainstream concept that is discussed by scientists. Yet it is incredibly difficult to understand from our third dimensional perspective. By looking at third dimensional issues through a fourth dimensional lense we gain an observational perspective. This allows us to lessen our emotional reactions and achieve more clarity, which is the goal of any spiritual practice. Unfortunately, relaxation, fitness or happiness have become the aims of modern spiritual seekers, which lessens their ability to think clearly and evolve. The term “Tesseract” is used in sci-fi films like “Interstellar” to describe the fourth and fifth dimensionsal construct, but can we access these dimensions now? Many people like the idea of connecting with aspects of themselves or other beings who live in different dimensions, but how does this actually work? Are we living in a huge, multi-layered computer simulation? How does spirituality fit into this model of reality? If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. Four Corners

“Every truth has four corners: As a teacher I give you one corner? and it is for you to find the other three.” Confucius As we begin a New Year it’s important to reassess, not only our goals, but our premises about life.  Are we standing on a solid foundation of truth, or a pile of comfortable lies? When we are looking for the truth we need a framework that helps us move beyond our personal opinion. Truth is not only based on knowledge, or looking at both sides of the story. We also need a level of maturity that allows us to recognise when those stories have run their course. By reviewing some of the topics from last year using Confucius’ four cornered approach, we will can bring balance to our ideas. All belief systems go through a reformation period, which helps keep them relevant and free from zealotry, so bring the four corners to mind when searching for the centre point of truth. Out of the Blue

In the last podcast of 2018, I talk in more detail about synchronicity and the nature of real spiritual experiences. Many people believe they can be willed forth through devotion to a Guru, or by following rigorous spiritual exercises; this is the psychology of the seeker based on a desire for enlightenment. However, spirit cares nothing for our human framework of cause and effect, which is why genuine spiritual experiences come out the blue. They take us out of time and elevate us to a higher level of awareness, free from desire and the need for attainment. They humble, rather than aggrandize. As we reach the end of the year, take some time to review your spiritual practices to see if they stimulate your ego, or nurture your soul. Let 2019 be the year where you detach yourself from the need to follow others, so you can develop faith in your Self. Now is the time. Broken Spells

In this week’s podcast I talk about the power of hypnosis and the psychology of the group. We all, believe it or not, spend most of our waking life in a light state of hypnosis and are therefore susceptible to all kinds of subtle coercion from advertising agencies and others who want to control us. The person who seeks enlightenment through a guru, or charismatic personality, needs to be aware of the techniques used to encourage devotion through mind control. By analysing the dynamics of cults, with special reference to the Rajneeshees and Osho, I show how easy it is for all of us to veer off the spiritual path and lose ourselves in practices that stimulate our ego. We are all subject to the power of certain people and ideas, that act like spells on our consciousness. Whether these spells are cast by organisations, or our nearest and dearest, we need to become aware of how to break them and assert our own will by connecting to our personal guidance. Still Waters

In this week’s podcast I dive into the ideas of Carl Jung, including archetypes, the collective unconscious and synchronicity. Being an introverted intuitive type he was the classic mystic, who merged the empiricism of a scientist with the vision of a prophet and his ideas form the foundation for our knowledge of the psyche today. Through my own experience with archetypal forces, I explain how these conscious symbols interact and heal us and how they were created through the perceptions of ancient humans and augmented by people throughout the ages. The collective unconscious is the store house for these symbols and can be accessed, as we would access the internet-based “Cloud” today.  The password is our intention, interest and readiness to explore the unknown of the universal mind. The Father

In this week’s podcast I talk about traditions, values and institutions that have been brought into disrepute in our western culture. I discuss the modern idea of marriage and how it differs from the traditional ideal, which leads on to a discussion of spiritual values, which have largely been lost in favour of a more materialistic focus. Many religious traditions are beneficial because they teach us about the human condition through archetypal stories, yet we often fail to see their importance and disregard them as irrelevant. The archetype of “The Father” is of spiritual significance as it helps us connect to a higher state of consciousness, while providing a sense of security. Today, we seek safety and structure through group identities or political parties, yet they fail to satisfy our need for a transcendent meaning and connection to the divine. Revelation

“Do not repeat after me words that you do not understand. Do not merely put on a mask of my ideas, for it will be an illusion and you will thereby deceive yourself.” Jiddu Krishnamurti In this week’s podcast I talk about the importance of cultivating a direct relationship with your own spiritual consciousness through communion, which involves listening and waiting for personal revelations, large and small. This communication is often lost when we perform rituals and mantras, or follow specific spiritual programs that fulfill our egos’ need for attainment, yet lead the seeker away from what lies within. I talk about the birth of the New Age Movement, its roots in the Theosophical Society and the writings of Helena Blavatsky and Alice Bailey. Many of the current popular spiritual beliefs originate in their channelled works, yet people blindly adopt them without examination. I also speak about Jiddu Krishnamurti, who was chosen to be the new world teacher for the Society as a child, but renounced his role and association with all religions and sects in favour of dedicating himself to personal revelation. Communing with your own spiritual guidance aligns you with truth, and allows you to take off the mask of another person’s ideas. Eye of the Needle

In this week’s podcast I talk about the impediments to moving through the eye of the needle in order to reach the “kingdom of heaven”. In the biblical passage it’s said to be riches that block our entry, but anything that we are attached to, including dogmatic belief systems, will slow down our spiritual progress. I speak about our attachment to information and the irony that the more information we have access to the less enlightened we become. I take a deeper look at alarmist Climate Change doctrines, New Age teachings and spiritual sales people who present themselves as saviours, as a way to understand why we are so easily persuaded by models of the world that prophesise doom or salvation. Why do we allow ourselves to be deceived? Why we refuse to doubt ourselves, or others who have previously led us down the garden path? Doubt allows us to think more freely, it opens the door to the other side of the story. It stops us from being foolhardy and keeps us awake. Irrational Tides

In this week’s podcast I talk about the tides of seemingly irrational thoughts and emotions that we can experience and how we can develop an inner community of characters to help process them. Whether we use a personality typing system, like the Enneagram, archetypes or something as common as a tarot deck, structuring our world in a symbolic framework will help take the sting out of overwhelming emotions. I speak about the importance of religions and introduce author G.K Chesterton’s work, which gives us yet another perspective from which to view Orthodoxy of any kind. If we become too logical, we lock ourselves in a mental prison that seeks to know the ultimate truth, which is often only a fraction of the mystery that life presents us. If we allow our irrational thoughts to possess us, we invite another kind of madness that rips us from the fabric of reality and isolates us in a different way. As always, combining two sides of the same coin makes us richer. If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. Inner Oracle

In this week’s podcast I talk about the Ancient Greek myth of Cassandra and the importance of consulting the archetypal stories that many modern thinkers believe are now obsolete. These, more than any thing, are our common heritage and allude to shared experiences that we all must navigate. The story of Cassandra offers us insight into the relationship we have with our inner oracle; our intuition. Many turn their heads away from their inner knowing for fear of where it may guide them. But turning away does not remove the insight, it only distorts it and creates a black mirror through which to view life. Mental illnesses of all kinds are a reflection of our inability to understand our own psyche and heed the call of our inner being. So how can we create a balance between our beliefs and our intuitive knowing? How can we create equality within? If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. Over the Rainbow

I often get rained on while recording the podcast and this week was no exception, but to my delight I also received the blessing of a huge rainbow appearing in front of me. It reminded me of the famous song from “The Wizard of Oz”, which is so full of hope as we dream of a new world where people live in perfect harmony. “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky And also on the faces of people passing by I see friends shaking hands saying How do you do? They’re really saying I, I love you” Yet this seems forever out of our reach, which is part of the reason there is so much unrest today. We are coming to terms with the fact that a utopian society, at this stage of our development, is unrealistic. When our ideals don’t match our reality we become impatient with our slow rate of progress and try to find someone to blame. But real progress comes from assessing our own part in the problems and solutions, which means we all need to face our guilty conscience. As Krishnamuti said, “The moment you understand something, you are free of it.” If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. Naked Truth

In this week’s podcast I talk about spiritual nakedness. The process of stripping yourself down to your core, without any need to cling to beliefs, opinions, teachings, people or plans. A place where you can begin to rebuild your true self without fear. We can see the opposite happening in the collective. People who are determined to make their internal reality and external one for all to adhere to. Those who shout the largest often draw the largest crowd, but they are also the ones with the most fear and the least connection to their spiritual self. If all you focus on is manifest materialism you will be caught up in the hurricane, so how can we each find our inner sanctuary that will eventually lead us to walk towards a new horizon? The Middle Way

I’ve come to realise that Facebook isn’t for serious discussions. People go there to have a look at their friend’s photos and laugh at Trump, while reinforcing their already created belief system. But occasionally I like to post something serious, even if I am disturbing the peace. Twitter on the other hand is a war zone, which I entered for the first time a few months ago. It is the ultimate combative chat room for people who like to engage with celebrities on current affairs. I never saw the appeal of tweeting sound bites to an angry mob, but having joined as an observer, I can see the benefit of watching the battles play out. I’ve found that in order to reap the reward of acquiring worthwhile knowledge, I need to watch both sides of the argument, so I follow people, or news outlets, with opposing points of view. If I don’t, I’m simply recreating the “safe space” of Facebook, where we all create “our world” or “our truth” and are less interested in “The World” or “The Truth.” On Twitter, once you get past the school yard bullying, acerbic comments and hilarious one-liners, the real truth often rests somewhere in the middle; a point that has been made by many spiritual teachers. I could have chosen any current debate to write about; climate change, Brexit, free speech vs political correctness; but the one that has gripped my attention for weeks is the vehement opposition of the appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in American. Most people are now familiar with this process because of the allegations brought forward by Professor Christine Blasey Ford, that Judge Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a high school party. But the Senate hearing was contentious before she came forward, because the Supreme Court   determines legal precedent. Members are supposed to be politically impartial, but their personal political affiliations often determine people’s reaction to their appointment. From the beginning, the narrative in the media with regards to Kavanaugh has been that as he is Trump’s nominee, he will do Trump’s bidding. The main objection to his appointment, prior to Dr Ford’s accusation, has been the supposition that he will overturn women’s rights to obtain a legal abortion. Headlines in the media and tweets from celebrities have focused on his desire to endanger women’s lives and narrow their contraceptive choices. This narrative caused protests in the Senate hearings and outrage from many women, but is it true? The short answer is, no. Having looked at many articles surrounding this claim I can safely say this argument is based on, at best, conjecture, at worst, a purposeful misrepresentation of the facts. Read a selection of articles below: Profile: Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s choice for Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh is not someone you want making decisions about women’s bodies—here’s why No, Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court won’t endanger access to birth control  Reproductive rights under a Supreme Court with Brett Kavanaugh aren’t only a women’s issue Why women should support Judge Kavanaugh’s Nomination When questioned in the hearings about his opinion on the precedent (Roe vs Wade) that guarantees the legal right to an abortion, he said he believed it to be settled law, a precedent on precedent. Watch Kavanaugh’s response to questions about Roe vs Wade But even this didn’t satisfy his critics, who continued to write inflammatory articles about what “could” happen if he was appointed and none of it was good for women. Upon reading these articles I understood why so many people were fearful about his appointment, but I was also amazed to see how easily people accepted the validity of the claims without looking into them. It’s almost as if they wanted to believe everything they read because it reaffirmed their own opinion. But how had these opinions been formed? Not many people are asking this question. Last week I said in my podcast (listen here), that in order to discern fact from fiction we need to understand why we believe the things we do. Beliefs and truth are interchangeable in many people’s minds; the sentiment being, “If I believe it, it must be true.” But beliefs are opinions based on our past experiences and the information we choose to allow into our consciousness. In today’s parlance people call this “my truth”. But when “our truth” is projected on to another we enter into the murky world of assumption. Many articles in the mainstream media regarding Kavanaugh before the allegations, rested on the following faulty logic and belief structure: 1) I don’t like Trump or his policies. I believe he is a misogynist. 2) Any one associated with him must hold the same views as him, so I don’t like them either. 3) Here are some past rulings from Kavanaugh that will (tenuously) prove he will overturn Roe vs Wade. 4) Ipso facto: no one in their right mind would want Kavanaugh to be appointed. It’s fair to say we all live through our biases, but when we affirm our right to impose our biases on another, in place or in lieu of the facts, we elevate the importance of subjective reality above actual reality. This is the definition of delusion. Once Professor Ford’s accusation was made public and the hearing commenced, the nation was divided between those who believed Dr Ford’s testimony and those who thought the inconsistencies in her story called into question her credibility. Judge Kavanaugh strongly denied the allegation, as well as two others made against him and so the information war began. Friends of both parties called into question the validity of what each said in their testimony – Kavanaugh drank more than he let on in high school, Ford coached others on taking polygraph tests, but denied knowledge of them under oath. I could write another article on the onslaught of hearsay that followed; yet nothing emerged that would corroborate any of the claims. In other words, there were no first hand witnesses to any of the assaults, even though they allegedly took place with other people around. Ford’s husband says she mentioned Kavanaugh by name when speaking about the assault and her therapist’s notes mention an assault, but the details of the story differ from the one she told under oath and Kavanaugh’s name isn’t mentioned – neither her full therapy notes nor the full transcript of her polygraph have been released. So after an emotional hearing, we are none the wiser. Whether you believe Doctor Ford or Judge Kavanaugh depends solely on just that, what you believe. The facts are unclear, so no definitive truth can be found and in part that is why it has divided a nation. In lieu of an actual reality, we rush to create our own reality. So often, what we want to happen in life is upended by actual events; it’s no wonder we project our truth onto situations that counter our internal narrative. It’s easier than accepting disappointment or acknowledging we may be wrong. Article: Outside counsel tells senators ‘reasonable prosecutor’ would not bring Ford case against Kavanaugh Months after his nomination was announced and after weeks of testimony, Judge Kavanaugh has been appointed to sit on the Supreme Court. The media, modern feminists and the “Me Too” movement are outraged and see this as another example of the dominance of the Patriarchy, whose objective has been to oppress women for centuries. The victim/oppressor dynamic has been entwined with humanity’s history and is revived at times of social unrest, so I’m not surprised we are hearing it in this case. However, even though on the surface it looks like a valid claim, I don’t believe its use is warranted, in fact, I believe it oversimplifies the issue and is disingenuous. Before I explain myself, I would like to encourage people to watch a speech given by Senator Susan Collins, where she gives an in depth and methodical breakdown of why she supports Kavanaugh’s nomination, even after hearing Dr Ford’s testimony. It’s well worth watching and I have yet to see such a detailed breakdown of the process and the reasoning behind someone’s view. You can view the whole speech here Now for the explanation. In a recent tweet a female author, who often comments on feminism and politics, called out “white women” on what she calls their “eagerness to support the white capitalist patriarchy & in doing so leave their sisters to suffer. Which is what Susan Collins just did.” (the author is also a “white woman”) She then clarifies her position saying, “No wait, clearer: Not just leaving sisters to suffer. Actively participating in the further oppression and subjugation of people of colour, women and men.” All because Senator Susan Collins formed an opinion that was different to her own. You can see this sentiment everywhere: people attacking other people who don’t agree with them, in the name of righteousness. And so one by one these movements implode, because they eventually turn on the people they claim to empower. Since coming out in support of Kavanaugh’s nomination Senator Susan Collins has been called a “rape apologist”, a term that is hurled at anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the narrative, that all women who accuse men of sexual assault should instantly be believed. These insults show a complete lack of nuance and diminish the credibility of those who profess to speak on behalf of womankind. In a parallel but unrelated story, the Academic disciplines of Cultural and Identity studies are under scrutiny, after three academics wrote hoax papers that were admitted to some of the key journals in the fields of (feminist) gender studies, masculinity studies, critical race theory, critical whiteness theory and sociology, among others. One of the papers entitled, “Rape Culture and Queer Performativity at Urban Dog Parks.” published in Gender, Place and Culture, outlined a fake study of “dog humping” and the implications of when owners intervened. “When the humping was male-on-male, owners intervened in the overwhelming number of cases. But when the humping was male-on-female, owners were far less likely to stop it. This, the study suggests, might say something about the owners’ internalized homophobia and their willingness to overlook female victims of sexual assault.” Read more about all the papers here While the connection to the outrage about Kavanagh’s appointment may at first be unclear, once you read some of the papers and the responses to them, you can see how easy it is for ideologically biased views to pass for modern scholarship. This is important because many of these views are taught to young students, who believe them as gospel. In addition, they begin to infiltrate society and the collective reality through social justice movements. If you are told enough times that we live in a rape culture dominated by a white male patriarchy that is oppressing women on purpose, you will eventually believe it, especially if those views are echoed through modern feminist movements. Thankfully, these ideas are being exposed to some scrutiny, not least because there are many people who are tired of being bullied into adopting a worldview that continues to promote and glorify victim-hood. The Academics who wrote the fake articles, say it best “We undertook this project to study, understand, and expose the reality of grievance studies, which is corrupting academic research. Because open, good-faith conversation around topics of identity such as gender, race, and sexuality (and the scholarship that works with them) is nearly impossible, our aim has been to reboot these conversations. We hope this will give people—especially those who believe in liberalism, progress, modernity, open inquiry, and social justice—a clear reason to look at the identitarian madness coming out of the academic and activist left and say, “No, I will not go along with that. You do not speak for me.” It is clear to me that we need to be aware of the potential for seemingly positive social justice movements to become divisive. When assignment to a group identity proves your guilt, or assumes your innocence, an unfair game is being played. Many activist movements keep our grievances alive while offering no reasonable or practical suggestions to facilitate change. Surely, if we are to make headway we need to understand the complexity of these issues so we can find solutions that work for everyone, rather than ones that are easily digestible and look good on paper. Yet slogans and a new lexicon for followers to use when attempting to convert, or persecute perceived aggressors, seem to be the best some movements have to offer. “Micro-aggression”, “trigger warnings” and “safe spaces” are all terms that point to the kind of culture that can result from the idea, that people are infantile and in need of constant coddling. If we are victims we become stuck in a loop of rage and blame. This is not sustainable. Nor do these states of consciousness lead to psychological well-being. The idea that I have hoped to promote in this piece is that the only place where our truth matters is when we are conducting the affairs of our own lives, not deciding the fate of another. The facts do matter, as does taking a balanced view by looking at both side of any story. If life is a play between opposite forces, may we all find the fundamental wisdom of the middle way

The Crucible

“A situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.” In this week’s podcast, I talk about how we discern fact from fiction and why we need to balance our emotional reactions with critical thinking. Often we trust our feelings as a substitute for using our intuition, which comes from a neutral space rather than a reactionary state of consciousness. Once again we are seeing a battle between opposing forces that is playing out within the crucible of the Kavanagh/Ford hearing in America. While being assessed for a position in the highest court in the land, a man has been accused of sexual assault by a woman. The character of both parties has been called into question by the media and people are taking sides. But how can we assess claims that have no evidence? How important is the presumption of innocence? And what makes us sure we’re right when our opinions are based on unconscious belief systems that are never examined? Whatever our opinion on this, or any issue, the only way to have clarity is to delve into our own psyche and start from a position of uncertainty, or at least open-mindedness. Sentience is Futile

In this week’s podcast I talk about nihilism and the futility of existence. Why do things matter to us, or not? Is it worth living a life that we feel is empty and meaningless, or does that attitude set us free? A lack of meaning can lead to depression, which is in itself comforting on some level as we perceive ourselves as victims. Wish fulfillment and magical thinking can seem like an easy way to combat depressive states of consciousness, but often leave us feeling unfulfilled. Wishing for a thing doesn’t make it so; it’s a deep examination of our values that reveals our purpose. Purpose, meaning and responsibility are the antidote to nihilism and set us apart from other sentient beings who are not so aware of themselves and their existence. Yet self-awareness can create self-obsession, over-thinking and all manner of mental illnesses. The fact that we are truly sentient is our greatest gift, but if not used properly can become a curse. How can we live with this double edged sword of consciousness? If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. Artificial Evolution

In this week’s podcast I talk about our desire to speed up our natural evolution through technology and the potential problems this can cause. Elon Musk has spoken at length on the dangers of creating advanced artificial intelligence before we have understood the worst case scenarios. Our shortsightedness and failure to think through the consequences of our actions has caused us untold suffering in the past. So how can we develop the wisdom needed to evolve naturally? Part of the problem is that many find it difficult to transcend above their emotional reactions or the survival consciousness caused by the rat race. We live within our limbic system with our emotional reactions running the show. Are there ways for us to activate other parts of our minds that may have been damaged or switched off? Can we use the brain capabilities of geniuses or savants as a blueprint for a more natural evolution, or as we destined to evolve artificially? Consequence of Desire

“I’m willing to suffer the consequences of my error, that’s not the same as being right.” Jordan Peterson The consequence of craving is suffering. This is one of the main teachings in Buddhism, yet it’s mostly ignored by modern spiritual seekers in favour of the pursuit of inner peace. We meditate, do yoga and practice mindfulness, while turning away from the key to finding liberation; becoming free from strong desires, or attachments. It’s not that we shouldn’t have desires, it’s that our attachments to them cause us pain. We make bad decisions because we fear the consequences of not having our desires met and remain on the hamster wheel of acquisition and power in order to satisfy our feelings of emptiness. Not getting what we want is an important teaching. Suffering the consequences of our actions is another. Yet we spend most of our lives running from both these scenarios. Let’s look more deeply at desire. If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word. The Logos

“In the beginning was the word…” There are many definitions of The Logos; the word, discourse, plan, truth, spirit and the divine reason implicit in the cosmos, ordering it and giving it form and meaning. Yet the words we listen to today are often far from truthful and we have come to rely upon rhetoric rather than facts. We have a new lexicon of terms that have been rinsed of all meaning and act as a safety blanket to shield us from the fallout of a crumbling system. But we’re not in Kansas anymore and the old ways of papering over the cracks are no longer working. The disingenuous are being called to account, which can bring up fear in the collective and can lead us into denial. But we have the tools to deal with our fear through the philosophical teachings of Stoicism and Buddhism. They help us develop a fierce level of compassion rather than a false sense of transcendence. Presence is your Power

Part podcast, part meditation; this week I speak about love. Not romantic or familial love, but the unconditional love that forms our inner presence. Our presence is not the same as our energy field, which can be affected by the outer reality. Our presence is the core of unconditional love that we all carry within. This is where our power lies. Our presence is our power; our presence is our protection. When we feel buffeted by the storm, we can seek refuge within ourselves by developing our inner core of unconditional love. We can invoke the assistance of other worldly beings, or we can simply focus on those we love and send that feeling out into the unified field for the benefit of all. This will bring us a feeling of connection to heal the division that is so prevalent in the world today. If you are listening in iTunes, please leave a rating to help spread the word.
