How to fail...Adaptability

Send us a text Adaptability is often the key to unlocking success, but what does that really mean? Picture Samson's legendary battle, where he turns an ordinary donkey's jawbone into a weapon of mass victory. After his triumph, he discards it, symbolizing the need to evolve and let go of old tools and methods. Whether you're facing career hurdles or navigating the unpredictable world of parenting, we explore the vital role that flexibility plays in overcoming life's obstacles. I'll also share how taking new approaches with this podcast has allowed me to reach out and connect with a broader audience. In another reflective segment, we draw lessons from the lives of Elijah and Walter Payton, illustrating how achievements sometimes come with unexpected emotional challenges. Elijah's post-victory depression and Payton's bittersweet Super Bowl win serve as poignant reminders to balance success with humility and self-awareness. I'll open up about my own journey—from a promising football career cut short to finding new paths in academics and beyond. Our stories, deeply rooted in Christian faith, aim to inspire and guide you on your personal journey. Tune in for a heartfelt blend of biblical lessons, personal growth, and faith-driven insights.

How to fail...Self-Care

Send us a Text Message. Have you ever wondered if setting boundaries truly equates to self-care? In this episode, broadcasting from the tranquil Sea of Cortez, I challenge the common belief that isolating oneself from discomfort is the ultimate form of self-love. This episode also shines a spotlight on the importance of wellness within the Black community, emphasizing the transformative power of self-forgiveness. Through heartfelt reflections, I share how holding onto grudges has affected my life and why letting go is crucial for emotional and spiritual health. Inspired by Jesus’ call to forgive 490 times, we explore the completeness and freedom that forgiveness brings. Additionally, I delve into existential questions about purpose, capturing the essence of feeling lost and yearning for connection. Join me for an episode that promises to restore your well-being and offer a deeper understanding of emotional and spiritual health.

How to fail...Grief

Welcome to another episode of "How to Fail," where we journey through life's hardships and extract pearls of wisdom. I'm Jonathan Boone, a 40-year-old African American father of two, who has traversed the valleys of grief and emerged with lessons worth sharing. Today, we delve into the multifaceted landscape of grief, encompassing loss of a parent, relationships, and experiences. My Personal Odyssey There was a time when grief enveloped me like a suffocating blanket, its weight unbearable. I mourned the loss of a parent, the dissolution of relationships, and the fading of cherished experiences. Yet, here I stand, testament to the resilience of the human spirit. I want to peel back the layers of my journey, exploring the nuances of grief that accompanied each loss, and the revelations that emerged from the depths of despair. The Lament of Loss Losing a parent is a profound, life-altering experience. It's a journey fraught with anguish, longing, and a profound sense of absence. When I lost my parent, I felt adrift in a sea of emotions, grappling with the void left behind. But through the fog of grief, I discovered the enduring power of love and cherished memories that continue to sustain me. The Echoes of Broken Relationships The end of a relationship can evoke a grief all its own. Whether it's the dissolution of a romantic partnership or the fracture of a friendship, the pain can be palpable. I've experienced the heartache of severed ties, the ache of unfulfilled promises, and the bittersweet realization that some connections are meant to fade. Yet, from the ashes of these broken bonds, I've gleaned invaluable lessons in resilience, self-love, and the importance of letting go. The Melancholy of Lost Experiences Grief isn't reserved solely for the loss of loved ones; it can also accompany the fading of cherished experiences. Whether it's the closure of a beloved childhood haunt or the passing of a bygone era, the nostalgia can be profound. I've mourned the loss of places, traditions, and moments frozen in time. Yet, in embracing the impermanence of life, I've discovered the beauty of living fully in the present and cherishing each fleeting moment. Finding Solace in Shared Humanity In navigating the labyrinth of grief, I've learned that I'm not alone in my sorrow. Countless others have walked similar paths, weathered similar storms, and emerged stronger for it. By sharing our stories, our struggles, and our triumphs, we find solace in our shared humanity. Guiding Light in the Darkness For those grappling with grief, I offer this beacon of hope: you are not alone, and your pain is valid. Seek solace in the embrace of loved ones, the wisdom of counselors, and the healing power of time. And remember, in the midst of darkness, there is always a flicker of light. In Closing Today's episode has been a poignant exploration of grief in its myriad forms. By sharing my journey, I hope to shed light on the universal experience of loss and offer comfort to those who walk this path. Remember, it's okay to grieve, it's okay to mourn, and it's okay to seek support. For in our darkest moments, we find the strength to rise again. Thank you for joining us on "How to Fail: Navigating Grief." If this episode resonated with you, I encourage you to share it with others who may find solace in these words. And as always, may we embrace our failures as stepping stones on the journey of life.

How to fail...... Suicide.

Welcome to the first episode of "How to Fail," where we explore the trials and tribulations of life, and the lessons we can learn from them. I'm your host, Jonathan Boone, a 40-year-old African American man, father of two, and someone who's walked the fine line between life and despair. Today's episode is deeply personal and, I hope, profoundly impactful. We're diving into a topic that's often shrouded in silence and stigma: suicide. My Story There was a time in my life when the weight of my world felt unbearable. I was consumed by a darkness that I couldn't see a way out of. The thought of ending it all seemed like the only solution to escape the pain. But here I am, sharing my story, because I found a way through that darkness. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't quick, but it was possible. I want to talk about what led me to that point, the thoughts that circled my mind, and the moment I decided that my story wasn't going to end there. The Build-Up Life has a way of piling on pressures, both seen and unseen. For me, it was a combination of personal and professional struggles. I felt the weight of providing for and taking care of my family and friends . As a man, I grappled with societal expectations and the silent battle of maintaining a facade of strength. And as an African American, I faced the systemic challenges that come with the color of my skin. All these factors created a storm within me, a storm I felt I was facing alone. The Turning Point The journey from that dark place to where I am now was not a straight line. It was filled with ups and downs, successes and setbacks. But there were key moments and tools that helped me find my way. I want to share these with you, not as a prescription, but as a source of hope. From therapy and meditation to open conversations with loved ones and the power of vulnerability, these tools were my lifeline. Ongoing Challenges Recovery is not a destination; it's a continuous journey. I still have days when the shadows of my past loom large. But I've learned to recognize the signs and reach out for support when needed. I've also learned the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. My experience with suicidal thoughts has taught me to be more compassionate towards myself and others. A Message of Hope If you're listening to this and you're in a dark place, I want you to know that you're not alone. There is a way out, and it's okay to ask for help. If you know someone who's struggling, reach out to them. Sometimes, a simple conversation can be a lifeline. Resources If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text "HELLO" to 741741. There are also numerous online resources and support groups that can provide guidance and support. Conclusion Today's episode was not an easy one, but it's a conversation that needs to be had. By sharing my story, I hope to break the silence around suicide and offer a beacon of hope to those who are struggling. Remember, it's okay to fail, it's okay to fall, but it's never okay to give up on yourself. Thank you for listening to "How to Fail." If this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who might need to hear it. And as always, remember to embrace your failures, for they are the stepping stones to success. Can I say turn up here? Is that appropriate... Well turn up!
