Forming Positive Habits Is Easier When You Break Negative Ones

People develop bad habits during their lifetime. Some are really difficult to break. But if the bad habits can be broken it will make forming positive habits that much easier. Take smoking, for instance. There aren’t too many people that will disagree that this is a really bad habit. This includes smokers. Exercising is a good habit, as long as you approach it correctly. Yet, it will be very difficult for smokers to adopt the good habit of exercise because the smoking interferes with their ability to breathe. This is a crucial aspect to exercising properly. Another example is procrastination. Most people universally agree that this is not a great habit. While it’s not as life-threatening as smoking, it can be a cause for companies to fire someone who engages in it. If people want to be more productive and they tend to procrastinate, they will need to break that bad habit. The good news is that procrastination is much easier to break than smoking. Also, just the nature of breaking it makes someone automatically more productive. Of course, not every bad habit is going to be offset by a good one. There are certainly plenty of bad habits that may not have any effect on good ones. They can easily coexist. For instance, if someone is a smoker, that doesn’t automatically make them a procrastinator. Therefore, they could already be very productive in their work. Some may argue that taking several breaks for smoking can have the equivalent outcome as one who procrastinates. But not everyone who smokes takes multiple breaks per day, so it is a weak argument at best. One way to approach positive habit formation is to think about how many hours you spend awake every day. If you increase the number of positive habits, something has to give. Let it be the negative ones. Unless those negative habits are done in your sleep, like snoring, in your waking hours, you either have to forgo those negative habits or you simply cannot add any more of the positive ones. The rewards for taking on more positive habits should easily overtake the loss of the negative habits. You shouldn’t try to change your habits all at once. It takes time for your brain to adjust to new behaviors. Do it one habit at a time or perhaps lose one bad habit while gaining a good one, etc. As you feel you have mastered the good habits, add others into the mix.

Changing habits can be difficult. There’s a lot going on in everyone’s lives. New habits require adding activities to your routine. Try to find a friend or colleague who has gone through a similar program and ask if the mentor they used actually helped them out. Try to notice if these people have improved their lives. Do you see noticeable changes in these people? If you don’t see changes, this could mean the mentor wasn’t much good or they simply reverted back to their old habits. Either way, that could be a red flag. In order for a mentor to structure a program towards your needs, you need to prepare exactly what you want to get out of the program. You should ask many questions about what is going to be expected of you and what kind of time you are going to be required to put into making the necessary changes. You also want to find out what type of support is available during the program as well as when it is complete. Ask about a guarantee as well. You are paying for results so you want it to actually work for you.

Health premiums are on the rise. This fact is making it more difficult for companies to cover their employees. Many companies are covering only the employee at a subsidized rate. If they offer to cover spouses and families, it is being done at the full rate. Even the employees are being asked to pay more in premiums than ever before. Because of this, several companies are implementing programs to help employees be more health-conscious. Some are even going as far as trying to force employees to take advantage of them. Many companies offer memberships to gyms. Sometimes they pay for it in full and other times, they provide memberships at a subsidized rate. Several employees take advantage of the memberships, at least in the short term. It’s going to largely depend on how convenient the gym is both in location and hours of operation. Even if only half take advantage of it, that could lead to significant savings due to less medical use by those employees. If they are healthy they won’t go to the doctor as often. This can benefit these companies in the long run as the employees will not be absent as much as when they were under substance abuse. Smokers who quit will no longer be taking smoke breaks. These measures all help to increase productivity while at the same time lower health care costs. If you want to live a fuller life, it’s time to put down the technology devices. You don’t have to abandon them altogether. But you do need to strike a balance. Technology is addictive, but there is more to life than getting lost in the technological fog. You may remember a while back a car commercial that showed a teenage girl talking about how many social media friends she had. She boasted that she had hundreds of friends and spent most of her time on social media chatting with them. She commented on how disconnected her parents were with few to no social media friends. Meanwhile, her parents were out having fun with their friends, living it up with them in the car that's at the center of the commercial. The message here is that it's the parents who are connected because they are the ones hanging out with friends. Technology is a crucial part of our lives. We can learn, research, and find out information faster than ever before. It gives us the means to supplement our income and even create full-time careers. However, technology is just one part of life, and you cannot forget about all the other aspects. Some places offer vacations that forbid vacationers from bringing and using smartphones or similar devices. Participants initially feel lost without their technology. But, after the vacation, many felt free to be without them. They felt more in touch with nature, other people, and their overall surroundings. If you cannot be without your smartphone, tablet or whatever, try to tie its use to other activities. For instance, if you want to exercise, look for exercise videos you can watch or download and start doing the workouts shown. If you are a musician, try to record music using your device. Use your technology for more than sitting around. Another idea is to use your device to help others in some way. For instance, you could tutor students who are struggling with their subjects in school. You could offer training to adults who are in between jobs. There are many ways you can help others with your technology devices. Set aside one day per week where your entire family is not allowed to use their smartphones, games consoles or similar for the entire day. After all the grumbling and moaning subsides, go out on an adventure with your family so you can get some exercise, connect with nature, and spend time with the family. Building Habits Slowly Is The Foundation For Success

When I worked in New York City, I found myself getting into some bad habits. I took the train to work and got off at the station that was closest to my office. I had a checkup and my doctor was not very happy with my numbers. I needed to change my ways. She said I needed to get more exercise and eat better. I did some research on diets and found that adding more fiber to my diet was a great way to be more full and hence eat less. I started eating oatmeal frequently for breakfast and increased my intake of fruits and vegetables. I didn’t give up sweets altogether but scaled back on them significantly. But I didn’t do this all at once. I incorporated these diet changes over several weeks. As for my exercise, I decided to start walking. Even here, I started out slowly. For about a week or two, I decided to get off at the train station that was a couple of blocks away from where I worked (both to and from work). As I got used to the pace, I started taking the train station two stops away from my work. Since this took longer to walk, I had to increase my pace a bit in order to make sure I wasn’t late for work. I continued this process of choosing train stops further away from my office until I was walking about three miles per day. I was also power walking because of the distance. Because I built this up slowly, it became a natural part of my routine and I found myself eager to walk. In my next checkup, the doctor was amazed at my results and told me to keep doing what I was doing. My results weren’t just an improvement. She told me the results of my checkup were fantastic. The point is not necessarily to go to work in New York City (unless you want to). It’s that I was able to build up good habits by doing so in a slow and steady manner. Had I tried to walk three miles in that first week, I don’t believe I would have been successful. By making small changes over the course of several months, it became a part of my life and something that I enjoyed doing. Of course, during the times when there was bad weather, I did scale back my walking on those days. But it just made me more willing to get back to it the next day.

What Are Your Failure Plans?

One of the biggest reasons we fail to develop good habits is because they take time. But another subtle reason is that we don’t plan for what happens when we fail. When people don’t have guidelines on what to do when the original plan didn’t work, we pass off learning the good habits as they weren’t meant to be. By setting up a plan for what to do if the original plan fails, we take away excuses. Without the plan, we would simply pass it off as trying. With a failure plan, we now have exact steps to take. One question you may be asking yourself is how do you come up with a failure plan? Try to find others who have gone through the process of developing the habit you are trying to develop yourself. Ask them if they were successful in developing the habit and if they hit any roadblocks along the way. Ask what they did to overcome those roadblocks. That, in essence, becomes your failure plan. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep those same people in the loop as far as your progress. They can act as a kind of support group and can serve to keep you on track. This not only helps you achieve your desired results but it has the potential to build up some friendships as well. Too many people look at failure as a losing entity when in fact it should be looked upon as the opposite. If you peel back the layers of experience of many successful people, you will see those layers filled with failures. It’s how they handled those failures that led to their success. It’s what you do with the failures that define whether you will eventually succeed. The only surefire way to truly fail is to give up completely. You may also wonder what happens if the failure plan doesn’t work out. There is nothing stopping you from having multiple failure plans in the event one of them didn’t help you achieve the results you were looking for. Having multiple alternate plans will give you the confidence that you can succeed and will show you that you are committed to doing so. This greatly increases the chances of success because failure is no longer an end game, it’s a new starting point. Any plans you do come up with, write and print them out. Refer to them whenever you are trying to accomplish what’s on those plans.

Everyone has needs, and they need to do what they can to address those needs. However, living life to the fullest can sometimes mean helping others out who may need it. In fact, many people spend their entire lives helping others. They receive a perpetual joy from doing this. It’s not necessary to give up living your life to help others. You can do both. There is nothing wrong with balancing helping people with satisfying the needs of you and your family. It is a balance though. Some people will lean more towards helping others while most will lean towards taking care of themselves. Some people don’t want to help anyone. They haven’t made the connection that they could need help themselves one day. It’s probably best to reserve judgment of these people as it’s impossible to know what they are going through in their lives. They could be the ones that require help but are too afraid to ask. There are also people who help because they believe others will accept them when they do. That may not be a problem because they are lending a hand to others in need. But, these people probably won’t admit that they are helping to gain favor rather than filling a genuine need for help. Doing it for the wrong reasons doesn't always mean everyone wins. There are many ways to help people. It could be random, where you see people are struggling, and you merely ask if they could use your help. You can also volunteer in your community. Usually, you can find opportunities in your local paper or on the web. You can also help financially by sending money to organizations that cater to certain causes. There is nothing wrong with helping in this manner. However, you may want to check the organization to make sure they are on the level and ethical. There are too many organizations that seem legitimate but are nothing more than fronts to collect money. There are also organizations that may be legitimate, but their practices leave a lot to be desired. An example is a charity that pays its organizers hefty sums from the proceeds. Many of them will adhere to the laws so they won’t get in trouble. However, if the compensation is more than you are comfortable with, it’s best to find another organization to support. You will feel good knowing that you made a difference to other peoples’ lives that you have helped. Helping others can be a rewarding experience for you.

If companies had their way, they would have their workers working 24-hours per day, seven days per week. Workers tend to compromise and try to get as close to the standard eight hours as possible. If this is a common practice in your life, you may want to change the situation. Work is important. But, there is more to life. You need to figure out how to strike a good work/life balance. Companies have the upper hand because they pay you a salary. If you challenge them too much, you may lose your job. It’s never good to find yourself in that position. However, you can make compromises, especially if the company values you as an employee. Some companies have learned that working employees too hard is not beneficial to the employees or the company. Overwork leads to burn out, and once that happens, employees are not as productive. If you can, try to convince your boss or the company that staff should be ready to work overtime when it’s needed, instead of making them do it all the time. There are going to be situations where you will need to stay late. Often that happens in project work when you are getting close to the deadline. When you aren’t close to any deadlines, let your boss know that you want to have more of a work/life balance. If you can get the rest of your team to do the same, you can make it happen. If your boss lets the team have its way, You shouldn’t use this as an excuse to let all the work pile up until it gets near the deadline. That is a risky move as you could miss the deadline. Once that happens, you can expect the boss to make you stay late all the time so that it doesn’t happen again. When you have a good work/life balance, make time to spend with your loved ones. There is a wide belief by many in the phrase, “what goes around comes around.” What you put out into the universe you will get back in abundance. If you give you will get. Conversely, if you take, you will have everything taken away from you. Thoughts can be considered transmissions out into the universe. How about successful? Do bad things tend to find them all of the time? The question for these disbelievers is what can it hurt to maintain a positive outlook? Another aspect to this is, what if it turns out there really is something to the theory of the law of attraction? Wouldn’t you rather be on the good side of that situation? You could make it part of your vision to make new friends, or you can strengthen the relationships with the ones you have now. Even when you are traveling, you can find low cost or even no-cost things to do. When you travel to New York City, for instance, you can go to Central Park for free. That could consume most of your time if you decided to explore all the grounds. There are plenty of other free things to do in most cities. People have to live there, after all. Consider creating a vision board for this task. This board is something that you can post pictures or news clips, or whatever you like. It can include what you have already accomplished as well as what you want to accomplish. You find artifacts that can be anything to help you realize your vision. Just place them on the board in any order that makes the most sense to you. It’s not necessary to keep every artifact on the board. When you create a vision of your perfect life, you now have set your mind to achieving the vision. You will take the steps needed to get there, and you will find it quite fulfilling.

The one aspect of life that people focus on is how much money they make or how much they have. However, money is something you can always find more of when you need to. It may take some effort to obtain it. But, it just takes some ingenuity and often, hard work. If you are like most people, you can get money when you need it. Therefore, why worry about it? The one aspect of life that you cannot make more of is time. So, why concern yourself with what you have when the time is ticking away? Spend more time with your family and friends. Make it a point to increase your visits with your family. You cannot get them back. You can make new friends. However, that is not as easy as you may think. It can take many years to find people who you not only trust but like well enough to become close. You should worry even less about money because the internet makes it easy to earn. If you have old items you no longer need, sell them on eBay or Craigslist. Find a website where you can trade services for cash. There are many classified advertising sites that you can announce services for cash. These days, again because of the internet, you can make money from your hobbies. You create a website centered around your hobby topic, and you either sell advertising, or you find affiliate products to sell on that website. If you can find products from vendors, you could start up an eCommerce site. That’s a bit more involved as you have to deal with fulfillment and order entry, but some companies will handle this for you for a fee. Plenty of people make full-time livings from eCommerce. Most people have more cash available than they realize. You may be able to borrow against investment accounts or insurance policies. Some people often find savings accounts they haven’t used in a while. If you look hard enough, money tends to turn up. When you stop worrying about money, you start to gain a new perspective on life. You will start to relax more and sleep better at night. You’ll be less stressed out overall, and you won’t be as short-tempered with people. You will find it is a very freeing development for you. You probably have heard phrases such as, “it’s a dog-eat-dog world.” Another is “nice guys finish last.” It’s true that you can get ahead by stomping on others. But, what kind of life would you lead if you did that? Have you also heard the statement, “what goes around comes around?” You won’t sleep well at night if your modus operandi is to trample on others to get ahead. The trouble is, you probably will get ahead quicker if you do this. But, at what cost? Sleep is an important factor in living life to the fullest. When you act in ways that hurt other people, it will affect your ability to sleep. Of course, you don’t have to take nonsense from other people. If they are behaving badly towards you, then you should speak up and do something about it. You do have the right to defend your position. However, don’t stoop to other people’s low levels. It’s just not worth it in the long run. Sometimes, you’ll find yourself in positions where you have to make decisions that will adversely affect others. There are no easy answers to this dilemma. You should try to find ways to make the situation as good as you can for everyone involved. If that requires you to be sneaky, you may want to evaluate if it’s worth staying where you are. For instance, if your company encourages this type of behavior, you should think about pursuing companies that are more ethical. They do exist, contrary to the hype that is portrayed by the media outlets and the web. You want to look back on your life and feel like you got where you did genuinely. When you look back and see it wasn’t such a pleasant a journey, it will have cost you many friends and maybe even bad love relationships. If your significant other is not on board with how you are behaving to get to the top, it won’t be long before they move on. They say it’s lonely at the top, but that often stems from peoples’ actions entirely. It’s true you have to make tough decisions that others may not agree with when you are in higher positions. But, when you do it with integrity, they will eventually come around to your way of thinking. People have feelings, and your actions can affect them. Always keep that in mind.

There is a reason why companies offer vacations. It’s because they want you to take them. Many companies are learning that employees work better in the long-term when they make time for relaxing. Vacations recharge your internal batteries. You don’t even need to go away to enjoy a vacation. Staycations have become quite popular over the past several years because the cost of travel has skyrocketed over this period. Your local area has more to do than you imagine. Just take a look online to see what is available. Many companies are starting to offer unlimited vacations. It’s unclear how this trend will pan out as employees may subconsciously feel bad about taking too many days. However, as long as you don’t go overboard and stay within the limits of what others are doing, you should be okay. You can use your vacation to get work done that you have put on the backburner. Sometimes, this is necessary, as it still gets you away from the office or work environment. But, even if you do this, make sure to have some fun on a few of the days that you take off. When you are away on vacation, make sure you spend time with your family. Try to limit laptop use. Better yet, leave the laptop and other devices at home. Consider making everyone in the family do the same. The idea is to connect with your family and forget about work altogether. You may believe your boss appreciates when you give up your vacation for the good of the company. They may appreciate it in the short-term, but they’ll forget it within a few days. It will make you wonder why you agreed to forego your vacation. There aren’t too many people who are irreplaceable, and in reality, no one truly is. Therefore, others can step in for you when you are gone. Get over the idea that the office will fail in your absence. There are rare occasions when companies truly need to get in touch with employees who are away. The good news is once you come to this realization, you can set your mindset to enjoy any vacations you go on. You won’t have to worry about whether being away is going to make the business shut down permanently. Don’t worry. The work will be there when you get back. There is always something to do.

You can’t live life to the fullest if your health is not good. Your illness or problem will prevent you from doing most of the activities you enjoy. In many cases, making the right choices can avoid conditions from happening to begin with. If you are a smoker, you need to quit that habit. Do whatever it takes to break the addiction. Yes, it’s tough because it’s one of the biggest addictions known to humans. Many states are funding programs to help citizens to kick the habit. Give your municipality or state building a call to see what is available. Speaking of addictions, if you drink more than a few glasses of alcohol every week, you may be at risk of being an alcoholic. While you can’t make any assessments from an article such as this, frequent drinking and drinking that is not part of social events is one of the bigger warning signs. When it gets to be early afternoon, and you are at work, are you thinking about that glass of wine or beer when you get home? If you are looking forward to having a drink, this is another sign you may be at risk. It’s something to consider. You may need to lose weight. Otherwise, you could be putting yourself at risk for heart disease. Even if you aren’t considered overweight, you should focus on eating healthy. The key is to maintain a balance. Find a diet that covers all the necessary foods your body needs. Do not starve yourself. Starvation diets are the toughest to maintain. You may even lose weight quickly in the beginning, but they will drain you of energy. Find diets that allow you to eat steady meals without starving yourself. If necessary, consult a dietician. No conversation about being healthy would be complete without mentioning exercise. There is simply no way around it. You need to get steady exercise. The good news is you don’t need to train for the Olympics to get in shape. You can do a great job with walking. Adding some weights into the mix is a good idea as well. You love to hang out with your friends. They are a great group of people, and when you get together, you seem to have a great time. But, sometimes your existing friends don’t share the same interest as you. Maybe, you want to learn some new skills, or you want a change of pace. Try making new friends, and they'll help you get there. Having hundreds of friends is not practical. For instance, if you had 365 friends, you would only get to see each once per year, unless you got together with several at a time. Nonetheless, most people cannot hang out with friends every day of the year. You have work, and you have a family as well. You can have more than the friends you have now, however. Realize that you won’t be close to each person you meet. In fact, you will find several of them are not compatible with you, and you go your separate ways. That’s a natural flow. There will be some people where, despite your best efforts, you cannot seem to connect. The idea when meeting new friends is not to replace your existing friends. In fact, your closest friends should remain close to you. It’s just that you want to have new experiences in life. That is how you live life to the fullest. Sometimes, it’s good to have friends that aren’t close. That way, you get together for specific purposes and then you don’t see each other again until you meet up for that same reason. You can call these casual acquaintances rather than friends. Embrace this relationship as well. You can also make friends on social media. Reach out to new people to learn more about their lives, and they can learn more about yours. Many of these people you will never meet in person. There is nothing wrong with that. Others, you may get closer to as you interact on the social networks. Then, you can both decide to meet up if you want. Some people like to separate business associates from friends and never want to mix the two. However, others don’t draw lines. People are people and getting to know them outside of the business relationship is acceptable. How you want to play it is a personal choice, and you need to decide how to manage that. When business associates are close, you will have them for a lifetime on your network. That could help you when you are looking for new business opportunities.
