Unbelievable interviews with women who have survived Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Unbelievable interviews with women who have survived Hyperemesis Gravidarum
HGP 013 Where did all the posts go?
You might have noticed that I took a little hiatus over the summer. During that time, I decided to change a few things, like the cover art and the name. So, then I ended up restarting it in iTunes as a whole new podcast, even though there will be several of the old episodes.
The New Podcast is called Preventing Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and you can find it here. You can click that link and subscribe to the podcast in iTunes. You can also find it in Stitcher Radio. And Spreaker. Whatever you want. Thanks for your continued support and if there is anything you specifically want to hear on the podcast, just let me know.

HGP 012: Will Acupuncture help your Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Have you ever wondered what Acupuncture was or whether it’s worth the time and money? In today’s episode I talked to Julie Chang from Fertility Revolution. She’s been an acupuncturist for the past 15 years. She uses Chinese Medicine, which includes herbs, acupuncture, supplements and nutrition to help women and men grow their families.
Fertility Revolution Podcast is a 5 day a week podcast talking to anyone from infertility doctors to attorneys and infertility advocates.
We discussed what to do as soon as you start therapy, how to evaluate whether acupuncture will work for you and the best time to seek treatment. Hint: it’s not when you’re vomiting 10 times a day.
Send Julie an email or connect on Twitter. Listen to her podcast here.
Have you tried Acupuncture? Did it help you? I’d love to hear about your experience.

HGP 011: Is Mineral deficiency a root cause of Hyperemesis Gravidarum? Talking with Jessyka Earl
I had a great time talking to Jessyka Earl about her experience with HG. She has one child from one pregnancy and she was sick right up until her premature labor and birth. She had to change doctors during her pregnancy when she didn’t get the care she needed. If there is one thing I want you to take away from this conversation, it’s that you know better than anyone what you need. Don’t apologize for getting the help you need.
Jessyka’s wake-up call came at about 6 weeks post-partum when she started feeling like she had HG again. That’s when she decided she had to take her health seriously and to try to figure out what was going on. I hope this episode is helpful for you.
You can follow Jessyka here or email her. jessyka.naile@ gmail.com
Things that were mentioned in the episode:
Zofran
Seabands
Stress can cause nutritional deficiencies.
How to know if you need Magnesium.
Why you need Zinc.
Why you shouldn’t take magnesium and zinc at the same time. (Take zinc in the morning with food and then start taking magnesium, spread throughout the day.)
When did you HG end? Is your health still suffering after the birth of your baby?

HGP 010: No One Expects HG: Talking to Dani Doughty
Most women expect morning sickness. It even feels like a rite of passage. I remember my Mom being sick with my little sister, so I also expected some amount of “not feeling well”. But no one expects anything as severe as hyperemesis gravidarum for their first pregnancy.
In today’s episode, I talked to Dani Doughty about her story. She is the Chapter leader coordinator for The Ayden Rae Foundation. If you’re interested in being a chapter leader in your area, check it out here.
Dani also mentioned a theory about natural gas exposure being a possible causal link to HG. I had never heard that theory and didn’t find much online. If you’re interested in the theory about carbon monoxide poisoning possibly being related, you can find more about that here.

HGP 009 What Tara did to prepare for a second HG pregnancy
Tara Rafuse Bulin talked to me about her two experiences with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. With the first she was completely unprepared for it and had a terrible experience. She was determined to have a second child and beforehand did as much research as she could. She spoke to doctors and experts, changed her diet and took supplements. You can hear how her second pregnancy went in this episode. (Click here to subscribe in Itunes. Or click here to listen in Stitcher Radio.)
Links to things Tara mentioned in the podcast:
Facebook group she started: Preventing Hyperemesis Gravidarum (Join us!)
Milk Thistle : Shonda Parker (see link below) suggests milk thistle during pregnancy for dealing with morning sickness. She suggests using a brand that has a high level of silymarin.

Fermented Foods: Here is a site for beginners
Mother Risk: You can call their hotline and speak to someone. They’re very helpful.
Cause: Hormonal Theory
Hypoglycemia: If you’re unfamiliar with hypoglycemia, this explains the signs and symptoms. You can struggle with blood sugar control even if you don’t have diabetes, which is it most often associated with. Many people have become insulin resistant, which contributes to wild swings in blood sugar levels.

HG buddy for support: This is a great idea and if you need help finding support, send me an email or leave a comment and I can help you find someone.
What health struggle do you have even when you’re not pregnant? Do you think this contributes to your Hyperemesis Gravidarum?

HGP 008: Dr. Tom Guttuso studying the effectiveness of Gabapentin on severe Hyperemesis Gravidarum patients
Today’s guest is Dr. Tom Guttuso, is going to be conducting a four-year clinical trial to test the efficacy of Gabapentin with refractory Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Initial results of the small pilot study were positive.
There is a closed facebook group dedicated to talking about Gabapentin during pregnancy. Request to join if you’d like to interact with other women who have taken Gabapentin during their pregnancy or would like to. They often post studies that they find, like this one. The results are promising.
Would you consider taking Gabapentin or would you rather wait to see the results in 4 years?

HGP 007: An only child because of Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Amy tells her story of having Hyperemesis Gravidarum during her first and only pregnancy. She described it as a “living hell” and while she’s so grateful to have her son, she doesn’t know if she can do it again. She was also diagnosed with PTSD, which stands for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. I think you’ll identify with much of what she describes.
Medications/treatments that Amy mentioned:
Avanza/Mirtazpine: anti-emetic/anti-depressant
Phenergan/Promethazine: anti-histamine
Unisom/Doxylamine: over the counter anti-histamine
B6: It’s recommended to get the active form of B6, such as this.
Cloudy apple juice: It’s thought that the malic acid that is naturally occuring in unfiltered apple juice softens gallstones so that they can be naturally expelled.
GAPS diet: Diet that stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome is a healing diet, meant to treat inflammation in the body and leaky gut syndrome.

HGP 006: Father’s Day: What do Dad’s really think?
In honor of Father’s Day, I interviewed three men, who have been through Hyperemesis Gravidarum with their wives.
I talked to Perry Pack, the husband of Vanessa Pack. He spoke about how overwhelming and impossible it is to deal with HG. His poem, “The Pitter-Patter of Little Feet” can be found in the first issue of HG Matters magazine. (Page 9)
Jon Doughty, husband of Dani Doughty, also talked about how there’s nothing much you can do, but that it’s still worth it.
Keith Dewell mostly argued about who remembered it better. (Just kidding.) (Ok, yes we do argue about that.) We’ve been through 5 difficult pregnancies together.
I wanted to interview this Dad, but I couldn’t get a hold of him in time. But go read his essay titled, “So Your Wife is Barfing her Guts Out”. It’s funny but true.
How was your husband supportive? Do you have any suggestions for Dad’s out there?

This is the continued conversation with Vanessa Pack, founder of the Ayden Rae Foundation.
Vanessa Pack, her husband Perry Pack and her family
In this episode she talks about healing after the loss of Ayden Rae, her last pregnancy, and the medical treatment that made a big difference for her. We also talked about what she’s doing now with her foundation. And the hope she has for the future.

HGP 004: Losing Ayden Rae: An interview with Vanessa Pack
Vanessa Pack is the founder of the Ayden Rae Foundation. She and her husband founded it after losing their daughter, Ayden Rae at 23 weeks gestation after battling HG.
“The Ayden Rae Foundation is a worldwide awareness organization dedicated to advocacy for Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) sufferers as well as expanding outreach for education, research and eventual cure.”
You can follow Vanessa Pack on facebook or twitter.
Next week we’re going to continue the conversation about healing, surviving HG and what’s going on now. She has a new edition of HG Matters online magazine coming out in June!

HGP 003 Is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning the Simple Cause of HG?
Today’s podcast is an interview with Albert Donnay, a toxicologist, who became interested in Hyperemesis Gravidarum when he saw that the symptoms were similar to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
How can that possibly be, you’re asking? Listen in and find out what Mr. Donnay has discovered. In this episode, you’ll hear
The risk factors in your life that could have contributed to carbon monoxide exposure
Why the symptoms go away as soon as the baby is born
The simple and free solution

HGP002: Can Medical Marijuana arrest nausea and vomiting? And interview with Holly
Would you try medical marijuana for extreme nausea and vomiting, even if you were pregnant? Holly decided to, after hearing about it on message boards for Hyperemesis Gravidarum. A growing number of women are seeking this treatment whether because the regular prescriptions don’t work or the side effects seem riskier than a sometimes illicit herb.
There are no studies on whether it’s safe while pregnant, so the only thing we have to go on is anecdotal, but the stories are adding up. In the case of extreme, unrelenting nausea, should we be more open to the possibilities?
I’d love to hear your opinion. I’m still undecided.
Medications that were mentioned during the show:
Phenergen
Zofran/Ondansedron
Reglan

HGP001: How not to plan a pregnancy. I tell my story first.
The first episode of the HyperG Pregnancy Podcast.
This is my story. I’ve been pregnant five times. I thought my first pregnancy was the worst. (Little did I know.) And then I had my fourth, which is my only girl. I regret not seeking more medical care. At my worst, I had lost 20 pounds and was only peeing once a day. Thankfully it resolved with time. My last pregnancy was better, I believe, because I took zofran and unisom from the moment the nausea started. It was my fourth boy, so I don’t know if that also made a difference.
References in the podcast:
Gelbvieh cattle (They’re handsome beasts aren’t they?)
Unisom -I didn’t mention vitamin B6, because I could never keep it down. But the unisom helped. (I would notice if I didn’t take it.)
If you would like to tell your story of hyperemesis, I would love to hear from you. Email me at hypergpregnancy@gmail.com or leave a comment below.
Was there a difference in the severity of your illness, depending on the sex of your baby? When did food taste good again?
