Once upon a time, a chief had a son whose mother had died at his birth. The old chief was a hunter and used to take his son out with him when he went into the bush. He used to do most of his hunting in the long grass that grows over nearly all the Inde country and used to kill plenty of bushbuck in the dry season. In those days the people had no guns, so the chief had to shoot everything he got with his bow and arrows, which required a lot of skill. When his little son was old enough, he gave him a small bow and some small arrows and taught him how to shoot. The son met an old woman who was so ugly that he thought she must be a witch. The old woman took him to a stream some little distance from the lake, and bending down, took out a small shining stone from the water, which she gave to him. He was loved by all, both humans and animals alike. He was blessed with wisdom, beauty and strength. He was the envy of the entire animal realm. The Leopard King was of a royal bloodline, as the animal kingdom practised a true and absolute monarchy. His closest allies were the Tiger (Agu) and the Lion (Odum), who were chiefs and members of a noble lineage of cats. Although Chief Odum was not particularly on the king’s good books – he was tolerated, as his great-grandfather had played a great role in the last war with the first wave of the white cavemen who crossed into their land. Today I will be telling you about The Igbo myth of creation, that is about how the world was created according to the Igbo tribe. For the Igbo people, they say the heavens were in good condition as all the Gods and Goddesses who they believed existed before humans lived together in one part of heaven. However, each one of them was selfish, and therefore very anarchical. This then became the cause of great worry in the heavens as jealousy and greed came upon these Gods and Goddesses. These deities were fighting against themselves just so they could obtain the powers of other gods. To stop this domineering attitude, a plan was then made by Chineke, the overall God. This was targeted at creating more people.
