Nedgine Paul Deroly is the co-founder and CEO of Anseye Pou Ayiti.  It equips teachers in rural primary schools to transform classrooms and communities, building a Haitian-led movement of civic leaders to spread educational equity. Teachers, students, parents, and school leaders work within their communities to create a network of civic leaders and build an equitable education system based on shared history, values, and vision. Nedgine earned a B.A. in History from Yale College and an Ed.M. in International Education Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Nedgine has been recognized among the top global social innovators by Echoing Green (2014) . Today  would have been Mpho Tsele birthday. This is a new version of the October's interview of Mpho , who passed away on the evening of Friday, 1 January.  I have included tributes from family, friends and colleagues in this extended version.  All my thoughts and prayers to the Play Africa family.  My condolences to Mpho Family.  -- "We are big believers in nothing about us without us. That's our motto. Don't make decision for people just because you think you know it all. Ask & Listen! " Mpho Tsele is Play Africa’s Play and Learning Supervisor, She oversees all play and learning initiatives and directs the Youth Work Readiness Initiative, training previously unemployed youth in play and learning methodologies. Play Africa is an independent children’s museum in Johannesburg, South Africa. Their approach to public learning disrupts the idea of what a “museum” can be. They  catalyse innovations in creative learning, children’s rights, parent engagement and social cohesion. Play Africa’s original exhibits and programmes are designed to support children’s cognitive, emotional, social and physical development.  In this conversation Mpho will discuss the importance of being an advocate of inclusion in all aspects of your life. She will share with us what is the true meaning of inclusion. Mpho will demonstrate why listening to the children and letting them   lead the play  is at the chore of Play Africa. She will also explain why children must be seen and included as citizens. "I am who We are" Clarissa Isabelle Delgado is the sum of many inspiring stories.  She is the co-founder and CEO of Teach for the Philippines,  part of a global network of organisations that recruit graduates of top universities and send them out to teach in schools in socially disadvantaged areas. Teach for the Philippines focuses its efforts on improving teacher quality and addressing education challenges at the system-level. Today, Teach for the Philippines has grown into a nationwide movement that has engaged over 300 young Filipino leaders who are committed to work towards meaningful and positive change. Since its founding, Teach for the Philippines has reached almost 80,000 students and approximately 80% of Teach for the Philippines' alumni continue to work towards education reform, with close to 40% working in the Philippine government, in positions across local government units of placement schools, the Philippine Senate, Office of the Vice President, and Department of Education. Clarissa is a member of the inaugural class of Obama Foundation Fellows; Asia Society Asia 21 Class of 2016; a 2016 Ten Outstanding Young Men National Awardee; a Fellow of the Philippine Institute of Corporate Directors; and is a delegate of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Next Generation Council. She holds a Bachelor’s from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Arts in Education, major in Educational Administration from Ateneo de Manila University. "Games allow you to enter that universal experience of shared connection and meaning"   Dina Buchbinder  is a Mexican social entrepreneur who co-founded Education for Sharing (E4S) in 2006.   Education for Sharing’s (E4S) mission is to form better citizens from childhood through innovative education programs based on the power of play and physical activity. E4S uses social and emotional learning techniques, and every session combines fun and creative games that prompt children to reflect on global challenges and civic values, including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.  Since the organisation’s inception, more than 1,3 M individuals have benefited from its programs Dina has been recognized as part of several organisations for her social work and entrepreneurship.  She is an Ashoka Fellow, Edmund Hillary Fellow, Schusterman Fellow, Vital Voices Lead, Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, a member of the Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders Community, amongst others. Inès and Ana are two inspiring women. They are recent university graduates. They came on this episode to share their experience and feelings about school.  Even though they were both very successful in their studies, the path to graduation was not easy. The pressure created in many classrooms affected their confidence and self worth at times. They express their frustration with the school system and its impact on students' mental health and well being.  We also discussed the negative impact that too much focus on competition and performance is having on students and teachers emotional wellbeing. Finally the conversation focused on potential ways to improve the human experience of traditional education. Sometimes funny, sometimes insightful and deep. "It is not like someone is helping someone else. It is more like an exchange. It is all about sharing knowledge. We should never be selfish about it. When you see the excitement in the learner's eyes. It is the most beautiful thing. They learn so much from us and we learn so much from them. That is what is important in life." Evelina Merlo is from Gisenyi, in the Rubaru District of Rwanda. Art is an important part of her in life; She believes  it is also the foundation of all culture and civilisations.  Witnessing the horror of the genocide had a profound impact on Evelina childhood. It definitely impacted her view on inclusion and togetherness. Evelina is a daughter, a mother, an artist, an entrepreneur and an educator. 4 years ago she decided to embark on a journey to become President of the executive committee. of the école Isoko - La source.  She seized that opportunity to implement her vision and lead transformation.  The school is located in an international and multicultural environment, being situated  a few meters from the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its richness is to have a mix of children from the region and elsewhere. The school welcomes children from 2.5 to 11 years old without any distinction of sex, language, religion or culture.    The ISOKO - La Source school aims for the development of each student through the free expression of their thoughts and the development of self-confidence, with respect for themselves and others; openness to the world and creativity, while maintaining a critical mind and a sense of responsibility, especially as a young citizen. "The world is a reflection of you and you are a reflection of the world." Steven Asei-Dantoni This is a special episode. In September 2018,  I was invited to speak at the International School of The Hague in the Netherlands. It was a group of 230 fun, highly energised 12th graders students and 30 teachers. I chose to rely on the power of serendipity by doing an open Q and A session with them. We talked about fear, depression, finding your mission in life. We also discussed bullying, failure, learning, and the importance of gratefulness and mindfulness. Finally we had a deep conversation about finding your true self and authenticity.  It was a very emotional conversation. We laughed, shared tears, and spent a special moment together. Streetlight Schools aims to showcase a vision for how we can empower and holistically develop ALL children in South Africa, especially those from underserved communities. That’s why they launched a primary school in Jeppestown where learners – despite coming from single-parent homes, hijacked buildings, and a community marred by xenophobia, riots and crime – are creating aspirational, fun, beautiful, creative, thoughtful and sophisticated work. Her dream has always been to change the world.  Streetlight Schools aims to showcase a vision for how we can empower and holistically develop ALL children in South Africa, especially those from underserved communities. That’s why they launched a primary school in Jeppestown where learners – despite coming from single-parent homes, hijacked buildings, and a community marred by xenophobia, riots and crime – are creating aspirational, fun, beautiful, creative, thoughtful and sophisticated work. "It is important to rebel against any conventional idea or any stereotype that society impose upon us" Rawan Barakat stands out as she defied her visual impairment to become a social entrepreneur reaching out to affect the lives of more than 30,000 children all over Jordan and the UAE.  She received the Synergos Arab Social Innovator award in 2011, the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Award for Globally Influential Arab Youth in 2013, and the Order of Al Hussein for Distinguished Contributions of the Second Class in 2015. She is also an Ashoka Fellow (2015). She is the  founder of the  Raneen Foundation’ a “non profit organisation” which aims to develop the listening and communication skills for children as well as the educational methods. Rawan reached more than 30,000 children all over Jordan and the UAE, and to around 1000 teachers  as well  mothers who have been trained in new and creative storytelling methods.  Raneen, which means echo in Arabic, seeks to teach youth about prominent stories in the Arab culture through audiobooks for ages five through sixteen.  Rawan’s work creates a space for more participatory interaction and creative learning and invites teachers to re-think traditional learning methodologies. Already replicated in schools and refugee camps throughout the Levant region, Rawan has plans to spread her methodology to the rest of the Arab world.
