IR: Australia #29 – Funky Punky
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 29 of Insomnia Radio: Australia. On this week’s episode, Erk gets a little punky. Reading around on Facebook, Erk decided to throw open this week’s episode for Australian punk bands on the Aussie Punk Facebook group. With a couple of bands known to me already, several other band members threw their hands up & decided to attract my attention.

IR: Australia #27 – A Celebration Or Business As Usual?
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 27 of Insomnia Radio: Australia. It is another milestone episode (to Erk at least!!!) for his sister show Erk FM: Australia but in terms of Insomnia Radio: Australia, it is business as usual. Erk thought that he would feature bands that he has never played before. Part of this was digging deep into the Insomnia Radio vault.

IR: Australia #26 – Attacking The Charts Hard!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to Insomnia Radio: Australia episode 26. It’s a busy time for Erk watching live music in Sydney! Erk has been at one EP launch last weekend (Hard As Nails) & has another one this weekend (Vanity Riots). There is a lot of great music out there & in Sydney this last Saturday night, there is great music that Erk has featured on Erk FM & Insomnia Radio: Australia before in at least 5 different venues on the one night. Somehow Erk wishes he could be in several places at once! This week, Erk also found that a band he has featured before are starting to gig again with a new lineup.
In an unusual move for an Australian indie/unsigned band, Melbourne female fronted hard rock band Bellusira are making an attack on the Australian music charts by encouraging people to pre-order their debut album Connection via JB Hi-fi. Online pre-orders will be signed by the band. In-store pre-orders are also available.

IR: Australia #24 – The Newsagency Sessions Nailed It!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 24 of Insomnia Radio: Australia. This episode provides a good mix of music that Erk has been seeing live recently & what Erk has coming up in future weeks. There’s also an update from The Voice in relation to Suns Of Cascadia vocalist Oscar. Interestingly, a vocalist’s appearance on The Voice led me (once again) to The Newsagency in inner-western Sydney for a nice night of intimate live music. This also led to half the playlist for this week’s episode.
Last weekend, Erk was pleased to be able to see Hard As Nails live for their first gig since Erkstock last year. Also, Erk was able to get a sneak preview of Vanity Riots’ upcoming EP.

IR: Australia #23 – An Australian Dose Of Insomnia!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 23 of Insomnia Radio: Australia. On this episode, Erk wanders back through the Insomnia Radio archives to find Australian artists. Some of the artists are well known to Erk while others are new discoveries. The aim of Insomnia Radio: Australia (and Erk’s sister show Erk FM) is to find new Australian music and present it. An awesome aspect of podcasting is that it is usually noncompetitive and people are happy to share, Erk included. There are a lot more songs in the IR fault for Erk to explore which will feature in upcoming episodes!

IR: Australia 22 – Welcome Back To The SGC!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 22 of Insomnia Radio: Australia! Erk likes it when PR companies help to make creating a playlist really easily. On this episode, Erk features some artists who have been on Insomnia Radio: Australia before with new music to promote. It is also good when the PR company lets Erk know about a band in his home city that he had no idea existed! Now that Erk knows they exist, you will also know they exist because you are listening.
During the week, Erk received a couple of song requests & did not want to say no! He also snuck some metal onto the show but it is very relevant to the song prior!

IR: Australia #21 – Erkstock Revisited!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 21 of Insomnia Radio: Australia. Continuing with the weekly format, Erk thought that he would revisit his debut gig as a promoter last year, Erkstock. Held to celebrate his birthday, Erk selected a range of bands to play at the Valve Bar in Sydney. With a range of female fronted rock & metal, everyone who attended the show & stayed longer than 5 minutes enjoyed themselves. So what have the bands who played Erkstock been doing since August last year? On this episode, we’ll find out. We’ll also find out for the very first time some of the other bands on Erk’s wishlist for the event (Erkstock 2? LOL).
It’s not often that someone who has been on an indie music podcast gets themselves on national TV but Suns of Cascadia vocalist Oscar has done exactly that. Appearing on the 2013 season of The Voice on Channel 9, Oscar had his blind audition shown during the week & has progressed to the next stage. Erk will be keen to see how he progresses. Good luck, Oscar! Follow his progress here.

IR: Australia #20 – Welcome To The Jetplane Era
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome back to Insomnia Radio: Australia! Erk’s been off seeing the world again including a trip to America, Mexico & a Caribbean cruise on 70000 Tons Of Metal. Erk is pleased to announce that Insomnia Radio: Australia is back & will be on a weekly basis! Erk produces a weekly Australian music podcast called Erk FM: Australia & it seems silly for Insomnia Radio fans to miss out on a weekly show while producing IR: Australia maybe once a month at best. So to use an Australian term, Erk decided to kill two birds with the one stone.
Because of the trip, the associated preparations and the extra content upon returning, Erk has not been to many gigs in Australia lately. His last gig before leaving for the US was Evil Ugly’s single launch featuring Domino & his first Australian gig for 2013 was Domino’s album launch. If you’ve ever seen Domino live and/or heard them on Erk FM or here on IR: Australia, you are in for a treat.
In addition, Andy Mac has been busy not only getting his KANG out but also launching himself as a solo artist (The Andy Mac Experience? LOL). Does this mean no more Simpsons references, Andy? There’s also a couple of artists who have had a name change since the last time they were played on Erk FM – indeed they are making their IR: Australia debut!
Aimee Francis has been jet-setting just like Erk. Arriving into America just after Erk left, Aimee’s fresh from an appearance at 2013 SXSW & touring around the US. Quite appropriately, her new single is called Jetplane. Later this year, Aimee will be supporting Pink in Sydney. Hey, finally a good reason to go to a Pink concert!
In addition, Erk is wading through his email inbox so there will be a lot of great music to listen to this week!

IR: Australia #15 – Interview Showcase #1
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 15 of Insomnia Radio Australia! It has been a hectic month at Channel Erk/Insomnia Radio: Australia Studios as Erk prepares to head to Europe (July – September). For a monthly show, episode 15 seems to be a mini milestone so Erk thought that he would do something different on this episode of Insomnia Radio: Australia. Instead of the usual hour of songs, Erk thought that he would give you some highlights from interviews of Australian artists. There will be 4 artists, each representing a different genre/style. It’s a long episode but hopefully you’ll enjoy it!

Each interview segment here is not the complete interview. Because Erk wants to tease you, you will hear the first quarter of each interview. If you want to hear the rest of the interview, you can listen to the interview in full via Erk’s sister music podcast Erk FM which is where the interviews were originally heard. The full interview also features music from each artist.
Representing the acoustic side of music is Sydney singer/songwriter Kristian Jackson. Kristian joined Erk in the studio recently & even brought his guitar with him. On the full interview, you’ll be able to hear Kristian play for Erk. Apart from singing and songwriting, Kristian also has experience in teaching music.
Kristian’s segment is followed by pop/cabaret performer Emma Dean. Originally from Brisbane, Emma currently calls Sydney home. At the time of recording the interview, Emma was mere days away from her latest show touring around the east & south-east of Australia with her “Something They Can Hold” tour. At the time of the release of this episode, she is halfway through the tour. The interview also contains discussion of Emma’s current album Dr Dream & The Imaginary Pop Cabaret.
Going harder still, the next segment features from Australian music legend Dave Evans. Still touring and rocking hard, long time Australian music fans should remember Dave from AC/DC. During the interview, Dave is very frank about life on the road, his time with AC/DC & life since. Just after this interview, Dave was about to leave on another overseas trip. On this interview, Erk is joined by his mum Judy & half of Foundry Road.
Finally, the last segment features western Sydney metal band Foundry Road. Unknown to Erk at the time, this was the boys’ first real interview. It is an interesting interview – this one is conducted in person around drummer Brad’s kitchen table. . Since then, they have played to a growing fanbase across Sydney and are getting better with every gig.

IR Australia #11: Happy Australia Day!
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Australia
Welcome to episode 11 of Insomnia Radio Australia! On this episode of Insomnia Radio: Australia, Erk features music from across Australia to celebrate Australia Day. Australia Day is celebrated each year on January 26 to celebrate the first British settlement of Australia in 1788. Australia was first used by the British like a jail – sending criminals (convicts) to Australia as punishment via a long sea voyage. While many Australians use the day to celebrate all good things Australian, many people also regard the day as Invasion Day because the new settlers fought with and took over land which was in the care of the Aboriginal people.
All of the music on this episode comes from Reverbnation, using the charts for each of the capital cities of the various Australian states and territories as well as a couple of regional centres. A future IR: Australia episode will feature some more regional music from across the country. There is a wide range of styles of music on this episode!
