The 1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco: J is for Genius
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
‘J is for Genius’ is taken from their album ‘Don’t Go Anywhere’ released 22nd March 2021.
America was gearing up for the sixties. Little Richard screeched his way to the top with ‘Lucille’ and Elvis had 9 hits in a row. Jack Kerouac penned his immortal novel ‘On The Road’, inspiring Americans to seek the promised land, and Harley Earl designed the most beautiful automobile the world would ever see…the year was 1957. By 1960 the tail-fin was all but extinct. In 2013 Harley Earl appeared to Essex chancers David Myers and Malcolm Moore in a dream. The vision of Harley was as clear as his message: ‘Create melody and meaning that will allow the human race to move freely and without drag…
Be aer-o-dy-NAS-mic.
Be The 1957 Tail-Fin Fiasco.’

Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
Liverpool UK psychedelic rockers The Vryll Society released the single Andrei Rublev on 14th April, creating further anticipation ahead of the release of their debut album this summer.
Inspired by scenes from Andre Tarkovsky’s 1996 arthouse classic film, Andrei Rublev is an emotive charge of hip-hop drums, crunching bass lines and hypnotic guitar solos, hinting further at the themes and ideas likely to form the basis of their upcoming record.

Pizzagirl: Seabirds
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
Liverpool bedroom pop artist Pizzagirl releases Seabirds, via Manchester label Heist or Hit, ahead of debut EP ‘An Extended Play’ to be released next Friday April 13th.
Having trickled his first few delectable electronic gems out from his bedroom-studio (or ‘Beatzeria’), and into the world via the Power of The Internet, Pizzagirl is almost ready to reveal his debut EP, An Extended Play. Before then though, there is one last taste to be had in the final stand-alone cut Seabirds.
Not a girl, nor having any affiliations with Pizza, Pizzagirl channels through his music and visuals the extroversion of 80s electronica, late 90s internet culture (just check out his website) and US East Coast sad-indie introversion, calling to mind the likes of Porches, Frankie Cosmos or Alex G.
Standing solo on stage, accompanied only by his trusty laptop, Pizzagirl displays the lonesome idiosyncrasies of an introvert married with the larger than life extroverted nature implied by his eccentric, zany and often pensive pop tunes. Pensive pop tunes that’ll be accompanying fellow Liverpudlian dreamers, and label mates, below is their UK tour through April and May. [via Super Cat PR]

The Fretless: Holton Alan Moore’s
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
The Fretless is the Canadian fiddle foursome playing an essential part in the emerging movement mainstreaming traditional Irish folk music.
Holton Alan Moore’s is from their album ‘Live From The Artfarm’ which will be released in a few days.
Starting with its debut album in 2012, the band has steadily pushed further into the public eye, winning Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Its 2014 tune “Waving To Ryan” has topped a million Spotify plays, and in 2016, The Fretless took home a Juno award for Instrumental Album of The Year for its most recent full-length Bird’s Nest.
With its latest recordings, instead of attempting to make a more “accessible” follow-up to Bird’s Nest, The Fretless is taking advantage of the recent recognition by releasing an instrumental album of tunes representing the player’s traditional roots. Recorded live in a barn in upstate New York before a handful-sized audience assembled only a few feet away from the players. [via Fanatic PR]

Sleepspent: Something
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
21-year-old songwriter and guitarist, Austin North began performing as a UC San Diego student before eventually returning to his hometown of El Paso to form SLEEPSPENT. The band, now a trio including Cecilia Otero on bass and Josh Mendoza on drums, will release its Chris Common (Minus The Bear, Chelsea Wolfe, Le Butcherettes)-produced debut EP “It’s Better If You Don’t Speak Or Think” via Slow Start Records on May 4th, 2018.
“A lot of the songs on the EP center around a feeling of confusion and a sense of isolation, and ‘Something’ is a prime example of that. The main line ‘I am very much alive / No thanks to anyone’ is almost spiteful, even,” songwriter North explains. “It can seem like a positive thing to become self-sufficient but can really be harmful to lose touch with others.”
The song evolved from a North demo into a Sleepspent signature song that features a kind of indie version of the “wall of sound,” which was created by North alone and then re-created in the studio.
“‘Something’ came to be all in one night by myself,” North affirms. “I recorded the demo with some odd recording techniques, like blindly playing random notes in the same key over multiple tracks in order to get a very noisy and chaotic sound that we recreated later.”
You can pre-order the EP for $5 at their BC link below.

Pale Green Things: The Islands
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
Pale Green Things (Jack Traynor) is a solo alt-folk act from Manchester, UK. After becoming disillusioned with the music industry, Traynor took time out becoming a long distance van driver for two years. Travelling across the UK and Europe carrying anything from Motorbikes to Library exhibitions, Traynor found the time being away from music studios with nothing but a guitar and a toothbrush was the perfect writing environment.
In September 2017 Traynor parted ways with the transport business and got to recording his new songs. The first collection being the debut album ‘The Beast In The Hearts Of Men’, due out June 2018.
Named after The Mountain Goats track, “Pale Green Things”, Traynor goes for a similar alt-folk approach with additional influences from Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, Belle & Sebastian and Iron & Wine. Out on 30th March 2018 on Just Maybe Records is the debut single, “The Islands”, and is an alt-folk tribute to the places that feel so far away from the world.

“Laputa Lights” is one of seven beautiful tracks off Kiev Ukraine post-rock three-piece ALINDA’s 2016 release, “Why Do You Twinkle“.
The band best describes their solid new album on their BC page, where you can pick up the effort for about $8 US, well worth the price.
The sounds of our new album will take you on a breathtaking journey to majestic mountaintops and the darkest depths of the ocean. You have a chance to take a ride along the rings of Saturn and enjoy the view of the other side of the Moon. Hover Bored: Safe Side
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
Manchester UK grunge-pop quartet Hover Bored release exhilarating new single Safe Side.
Formed in Wakefield, but now based in Manchester, Hover Bored are an up-and-coming grunge-pop quartet set to release their new single, the fiery, exhilarating Safe Side on March 30th.
Searing riffs, rolling bass, crashing drums and bratty vocals coalesce into a fiercely infectious track. Only just breaking the two-minute barrier, it calls to mind the likes of Dinosaur Pile-Up, Honey Lung and King Nun. Hover Bored’s sound is a fuzzy concoction of modern grunge and scuzzed out power-pop.
Gigging extensively across the key cities in the musical hot-bed that is the North West of England, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, it’s no surprise the four-piece bring to their recordings an urgency usually reserved for blisteringly loud live sets in grimy, sticky venues.

butter: Bigolder
Episode in
Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
The featured track “Bigolder” by Montana based trio, BUTTER comes from their 2013 seven track release, “Field Field Lake Lake“. This latest effort was recorded in Eureka, Montana with a few of my new personal favorites also including “Truck” & “Old Field“. Overall it’s a stunningly solid effort with many beautifully vocal moments and instrumentation to match.
Butter had been playing as a group, in many different combinations, for six years when this last effort was released. They reportedly started singing together in a laundry room in Missoula back in 2007 and quickly realized it was more fun to sing together than pretty much anything else.
The album can be purchased under a name-your-price model at the BC link below, in addition to a very reasonable $3 fee for their 2011 album, “Removable Beast“. A live version of “Moonfaces” recorded September 1st, 2013 in Missoula, MT, is embedded further below.
