Jesus did amazing miracles everywhere he went. But when he visited his hometown of Nazareth, they didn’t have faith in him. There’s a famous story of a bleeding woman who was healed by Jesus. Jesus’s parables aren’t little stories about being a “good person.” Rather they’re more often warnings about coming judgment. But his parables require serious reflection to understand. 🤔 While some parables standalone, the five key parables in Mark 4 are linked together. In Mark 3:20-34, Jesus is accused by the Jewish religious leaders of being demonic. They said he drove out demons by the authority of the "prince of demons." Notice that they didn't say hewasn't driving out demons. That fact they couldn't deny. But their accusation was about HOW Jesus was driving them out. So let's take their question seriously. Jesus was criticized by religious leaders for breaking Sabbath laws (see Mark 2:23-3:6). Frankly, Christians often don't treat this seriously enough. Jesus was questioned by religious leaders about why his followers didn't fast (see Mark 2:18-22). That is, why they didn't refrain from eating for a specific period of time for religious purposes. The insecurity behind the question was, "Do you think you're better than we are?" But Jesus never said that his followers wouldn't fast. Actually, he said they would fast...only not yet. So why did Jesus say his followers would fast later? In The Gospel of Mark chapter 1, Mark emphasized the authority of Jesus. Mark claimed that Jesus has the power and authority to heal anyone. But as we read on in Mark's account, we'll see that Jesus doesn't heal everyone. I don't want to get ahead in our investigation of Jesus, but this could be confusing. So...if Jesus can heal anyone, why would Jesus not heal everyone? So Mark wrote in his Gospel account that Jesus healed many people. But in Mark 1:35-45, Mark made a special note about Jesus healing a man with leprosy. Now what's so striking in the story is that Jesus touched the man with leprosy. Touching someone with leprosy was a big "no, no" in the Law of Moses. So did Jesus break the law when he touched the leper? This may be obvious, but I'm going to say it anyway... Jesus was Jewish. More specifically, he was a 1st Century Palestinian Jew, not a 21st Century American Christian. So if we want to fully understand Jesus, we need a Jewish perspective. Which is why it was such a pleasure for me to interview my friend Rabbi Albert Slomovitz. In our conversation, we talked about Jesus as a young boy, as a rabbi, and even the possibility of him being the Messiah of God. (It was so fun!) Mark was convinced that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah of God. So Mark provided testimonies from others to support this claim. In the Hebrew Bible, there are many prophecies about a coming Messiah or "anointed one". Meaning, when the Messiah comes, he must meet the criteria laid out in the prophecies. Even now most of our Jewish friends are still waiting for the Messiah to come. But Mark makes the big claim that the Messiah has already come...that is, Jesus.
