The history of ancient Israel through the eyes of the Old Testament
The history of ancient Israel through the eyes of the Old Testament
1.21 Where Did the Israelites Come From?
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today we discuss the various theories out there relating to the origin of ancient Israel. Seems like a no brainer, right? I mean, we have the Bible and it already tells us how it happened. You may be surprised to learn that there are some who disagree.
We also look at the Amarna letters, something I’ve neglected up to this point. I just couldn’t figure out how to wedge them in since, spoiler alert, they don’t really reference anyone or any event in the Bible.
So thank you for joining me today. I hope you enjoy this episode. Next time we’ll be moving straight into the book of Judges. So hang on to your big toes and let’s get ready.
Until then, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.20 Choose Ye This Day
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Welcome back. In today’s episode Joshua delivers what appears to be a couple of farewell addresses, but perhaps they are examples of ancient near eastern covenants. We’ll look at that and break down some of the elements of Hittite and Assyrian covenants and see if what Joshua is doing fits into that pattern.
We’ll also find out if the monotheistic Israelites still have other gods they’re holding on to and what Joshua thinks about that.
At the end of Joshua we sadly have three funerals to attend. All that and more on today’s JoshuaJudgesRuth.
For homework, read ahead in Judges. And as always, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.19 The Altar of Witness
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
The Levites, what I call the 13th tribe, get their land, and they are positively urban dwellers, though they do need a little acreage for their flocks and cattle.
You know who else needs land for their flocks and cattle? The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh. Having fought the war of conquest these tribes are free to return to the land allotted to them east of the Jordan.
On their way back home they stop and do something that really ticks off the tribes west of the Jordan. They’re so put out by it they want to go to war. Will cooler heads prevail or will we see the first Israelite civil war? Tune in to find out, or read Joshua 22. Whatever.
Thanks for listening. Be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.18 Division, Dan, and Refuge
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today’s podcast divides up the rest of the Promised Land amongst the seven tribes of Israel who have not received land up to this point. We’ll find out which tribes got that primo real estate along the Mediterranean.
We’ll learn a little about Dan. Not Dan the Man, but Dan the tribe of Israel, and how he, or they, let that primo real estate slip from their grasp.
We then turn our attention to the cities of refuge. These were towns you could run to if you accidentally killed your friend before one of his relatives could kill you.
All that and more in today’s exciting installment of JoshuaJudgesRuth. Thank you for listening. Be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.17 Land for Everyone
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
In today’s episode we talk about marrying cousins for some reason and we look at why Manasseh was so whiny.
Caleb and Judah have received their land but Caleb needs someone to capture a city, and his nephew arises to the occasion.
Ephraim and Manasseh, Jacob’s favorite grandsons, receive their land, but all of them, Judah, Ephraim, and Manasseh are having trouble pushing out the pesky Canaanites.
Thank you for listening and as always, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you.

1.16 Conquer and Divide
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
The land has rest from war, but there is still a lot of land still occupied by the Canaanites. The Israelites have not driven them all out. That will be the job of each of the tribes once they reach their allotted territories.
Today we begin looking at who got what land and along the way we see how the Levites earned their living and where Caleb wanted to live. We also look at a list of cities that reads like a who’s who of places Joshua conquered, because that’s what it is.
I hope you enjoy this episode of JoshuaJudgesRuth. As always, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.15 Leave No Survivor?
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today we take a break from the narrative and talk about how the Israelites were to treat the Canaanites. Were they to kill them, live peaceably with them, drive them out, or some combination of those choices?
I pronounce an over whelming number of Hebrew words incorrectly, so be sure to listen and let me know what you think.

1.14.5 Update
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
It’s been quite a while since I’ve put up an episode. If you’ve been anxiously waiting for that I apologize. I hope to have a new episode up in a couple of weeks. My excuse is I’ve been kinda busy. What with work, my kids’ weekend basketball tournements, and the time I spend being lazy it’s been hard to get a new episode researched and published. I hope to rectify that shortly.
Until then, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.14 Mopping Up the North
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today the Israelites are battling the northern alliance formed by Jabin the king of Hazor. Jabin has a bunch of soldiers, horses and chariots, which may or may not pose a threat to the Israelites.
If you defeat an army which used a bunch of horses, what do you do with the animals after the battle? Does it make sense to hobble them? Should you conscript them into your own army? We’ll see what Joshua’s decision was here in chapter 11.
Chapter 11 also brings us into contact with the dreaded Anakim again, and not for good. We’ll get to deal with them again later. They were the giants the Israelite spies saw while scoping out the land. I bet the battle with them is epic. Find out if it was by listening, and thank you for doing so.

1.13 (More Conquest)
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today we look at the rest of chapter 10 and then we get started with chapter 11, which means we finish up the southern conquest and get started conquesting the north.
The king of Hazor picks the fight in chapter 11, but before that it was Adoni-zedek down in Jerusalem. Joshua makes a whirlwind tour through southern Palestine, kicks butt, and takes names.
But does he take all the names, or are there some details the writer doesn’t give us? Does he conquer every square inch of the Promised Land or are there areas left untouched by Israelite hand?
We’ll learn just a little about Hazor and we’ll find out who is buried in Abraham’s tomb. Thanks for listening. And as you’re out conquesting be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.12 The Day the Sun Stood Still
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today we look at Joshua chapter ten. Chapter ten tells the story of one of the most momentous events in our solar system’s history – the day the sun stood still in the sky, or at least appeared to because as we know the sun doesn’t actually move. Well, is is moving as part of the larger galaxy, but you know what I’m saying.
More down to earth chapter ten is the story of Israel’s southern campaign in Canaan. It’s quick and it’s decisive, and even though we don’t have all the details there is no doubt who the victors are by the time we get to the end of the story. We also see that part of the reason the Amorites lost the battle is because they got stoned right in the middle of it. That never helps.

1.11 The Gibeonites are Tricksy
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today we learn how and why the Gibeonites trick the Israelites into a peace treaty. How did they pull off the ruse? For one they had to find some old worn out clothes at the thrift store.
Were the Gibeonites successful? Would they have a place in Israel after the conquest? Listen to today’s episode to find out (or actually read the passage from Joshua 9, either way).
If you do choose to listen, thank you. And please, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.10 The Ruins of Ai (which means the ruins)
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Today the Israelites recover from their devastating defeat and loss of 36 men at Ai. They purged the sinner Achan and now they were ready to march up and finally take the settlement. Did they get more than they bargained for? Did Ai have an ally? We’ll see the strategy Joshua employs and we’ll even bring Bethel into our story. We’ll also look at the possibility that archeology has misidentified the ancient site of Ai.
Today’s chapter, chapter 8, closes with a ceremony where certain blessings and curses are pronounced. There’s even an old fashioned bar-b-q. Thanks for listening.

1.9 Sin in the Camp – Achan Messes Up Big Time
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
In today’s episode we discover who took the proscribed things from Jericho and what Joshua did as a result. We also learn that it was hard to be related to someone who broke a commandment.
Did the Israelites come up with a story to explain how the Valley of Achor got its name, or did an actual event lead to the naming of the valley? At any rate, Achan had his share of troubles, and getting stoned wasn’t the least of them.

1.8 And the Walls…Come Tumblin’ Down
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
Thank you for listening, and reading, because that’s what you’re doing right now, reading. Or maybe you hit the play button above and now you’re listening and reading. Either way, thank you!
Today we’re looking at Joshua chapter six. This is the chapter that details how the Israelites brought down the walls of Jericho. Before we get there I talk about why the Israelites are sent to drive out the Canaanites in the first place. I then go through the narrative of chapter six, and wrap up with just a little information about the archeology of Jericho.
Again, thank you for listening. I hop you enjoy. And remember, be strong and courageous. Have I not commanded you?

1.7 Circumcision, Male Adult-Onset Circumcision
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
In this episode we look at Joshua chapter 5. The Israelites have just crossed the Jordan and they’re getting ready to celebrate the Passover, but they have some business to attend to first. This business involves flint knives and foreskins.
I talk quite a bit about circumcision today, which is the outward sign of God’s covenant with the Hebrews. The ladies, luckily enough, have no such sign to bear. Who says women aren’t appreciated in the Bible?

1.6 Israel Crosses the Jordan, with the Ark of the Covenant
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
In today’s episode Joshua and the Israelites cross the Jordan River. The Ark of the Covenant leads the way, carried by four priests. As soon as the Ark and the priests get to the river the water dries up and they cross over on dry ground.
How long would it take for 2 million people to cross the Jordan? You can find out by listening to today’s episode. We talk about Joshua chapters 3 and 4, and go over the background of the Ark of the Covenant itself.

1.5 Rahab the Harlot (Prostitute) and the Two Spies
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
In episode 5 we look at the two spies Joshua sent to Jericho. Do we know who they are?
We also look at Rahab and her chosen profession, harlotry, or prostitution (not sure which is the more politically correct word). The Bible talks a lot about harlotry actually, so we’ll just scratch the surface today.

1.4 The 13 Tribes of Israel
Episode in
JoshuaJudgesRuth
There are 12 tribes of Israel, right? But why aren’t the Levites counted as one of the tribes? Don’t they qualify? We’ll look at that today.
As I promise in the podcast, here are the sons of Jacob and the 12 tribes of Israel side by side:
Sons of Jacob Tribes of Israel
Reuben Reuben
Simeon Simeon
Levi Judah
Judah Dan
Dan Naphtali
Naphtali Gad
Gad Asher
Asher Issachar
Issachar Zebulun
Zebulun Benjamin
Joseph Ephraim
Benjamin Manasseh
Also, I failed to mention it before, but Joshua used to be known as Hoshea until Moses changed his name. He’s not the first person in the Bible to get a new name.

Episode in

There is no real episode this week or next. I apologize. I won’t be able to get a new episode written and recorded this week or next as I’ll be indisposed, as they say.
Also, Joshua’s death isn’t described in the last eight verses of his book. So listen for my important correction.
