KRP 026: NOP Status with Steve Horn
Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
In 2015 allegations came out against Alberto Salazar and some unethical behavior with respect to drug use. Before you accuse us of accusing them, stop. In this podcast episode, Steve Horn (see his bio below) and I go over when this all went down, what happened then, what’s happened since and what happened VERY recently. Join us as we seek to learn more, become more informed and help more people understand what exactly is going on.
Steve Horn is an Indianapolis-based investigative journalist and writer for DeSmogBlog.com. His writing has appeared in The Intercept, Vice News, The Guardian, Al Jazeera America, Wisconsin Watch, Isthmus, NUVO and other publications.
A graduate of University of Wisconsin, he ran at the Division-III level for a year for Carthage College before transferring and joining the Wisconsin Track Club, which won the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) national championship for cross country in 2008 (his first year at UW). He has completed eight marathons with a PR of 2:43:04 at the 2009 Boston Marathon, which he ran at age 20. He ran a 2:45 at the 2009 Chicago Marathon and 2:44 at that same race in 2010. Between 2011-2013, Steve took nearly three years off of the sport and exercise altogether and is now hungry to get back to where he was in the sport before taking a few years off post-college graduation to focus on his journalism career on a 100-percent of the time basis.

KRP 024: Be Your Best with Ashley Higginson
Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
Ashley Higginson is a lawyer in New Jersey. Ashley Higginson LOVES to throw parties and have friends over. Ashley Higginson is a sponsored running for Saucony who competed in the Olympic Trials in 2012 and just recently, two weeks ago in Eugene, Oregon. Ashley grew up in New Jersey, did all her schooling in New Jersey, and with the help of some GREAT people in New Jersey along with her hard work and dedication has become one of THE BEST steeplechasers the United States has ever had. WARNING: The first time I interviewed Ashley, I didn’t record any audio. The second time I only got part of it. I promise to be better. This podcast is short and sweet, kind of like Ashley:) Also, Ashley and I have worked together to create a SWEET graphic of Ashley at the Trials with one of her favorite quotes and a quote from our interview. KRP 023: Coming Back with Anna Willard
Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
Anna Willard has run 1:58 for the 800, 3:59 for the 1500 (4:16 estimated 1600 meter equivalent) and 9:22 for the steeplechase (that’s 5:01/mile for 1.86 miles over a total of 35 immovable 5 inch x 5 inch barriers each 2.3 feet high, 7 of which include a friendly water jump starting measuring 2.3 feet deep and sloping up until level with the ground approximately 12 feet later.) Whether you know anything about fast times for women runners or not, these are fast. She’s been to the Olympics once (2008) and ran in the Finals. She ran in two World Championships Finals (Steeplechase 2007 and 1500 m 2009.) Where do you go from there? A gold medal attempt perhaps? World records? What happens when you get sick, and injured, and can’t seem to improve? This is Anna Willard’s story.

KRP 022: A Hard Sport with Tara Welling
Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
Tara Welling is SO cool. Sweetheart, frank, competitive and humble. She ran the 10,000 this past Saturday in the Olympic Trials final and did not do well. She took that bad race, and used it as motivation when yesterday she ran a great 5,000 meter in the Olympic Trials semifinal qualifying her for the final this Sunday July 10th. In this interview I get to know Tara, who she is, what she likes. Then we talk about her time at the Nike Oregon Project, injury, retiring (briefly) coming back, being coached by Jonathan Marcus, getting sponsored by Skechers and making it to the highest profile track meet the United States has to offer. Something tells me, you’re going to like this! Find links and show notes here: http://www.kaizenrunning.com/krp-022/

Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
Laura Thweatt is FEARLESS! She’s also beautiful, chill and so down-to-earth. I got to interview her after she placed 5th in the Women’s 10,000 meter final of the Olympic Trials here in Eugene. For someone who came so close to qualifying for the Olympics and didn’t make it, she is SUPER positive and hopeful. She will be running the 5,000 meter later this week and I am rooting for her…and no one else! Jk, but I do hope she does well. In this interview we recap her race in the 10K, talk about what she would do different, move onto the 5K, and then talk about her and her life. You’re going to LOVE this.

Episode in

Who gets to decide when you’re done? Who makes that choice? Brad Barton ran in college, and then stopped. He wasn’t inactive, but he wasn’t particularly active and in shape either. At 44 years old he ran a coaches mile in 4:43 and realized he still had something to do. He set several world records from the mile indoors, the mile outdoors and the 3,000 meter steeplechase. This episode of the Kaizen Running Podcast is Brad’s story. KRP 018: Mental Toughness PI, The Happiness Advantage
Episode in
Kaizen Running Podcast
Part 1 of what will become a powerful series for how to raise or even PERFECT the mental game of an athlete, and for our purposes, a runner. Research has shown that happiness is a determining factor for the success of a person within their job. Many times we can get down and depressed because of setbacks and failures, but that doesn’t HAVE to be the case. We can train ourselves and our brains to be happy by exercising, meditating, doing a conscious act of kindness, journaling about a positive experience and writing 3 things we’re grateful for every day. How does this make us happier? That’s what this podcast is all about!

On a cold, wet night at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon Julia Webb raced her last 3,000 meter Steeplechase for the current track season. The next day, I interviewed her about MANY things running. What resulted is one of the BEST episodes yet on the Kaizen Running Podcast. How do you separate your achievements (or lack thereof) from your worth as a person? If you could do it all over again (prepare for the 2012/2016 Olympic Trials) or if you do it again (prep for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,) what would/will you do differently? And how can I achieve my potential? Those are some of the questions we talk about. Julia is marvelous; full of energy, wisdom and humility. So down-to-earth, you will LOVE this episode.

These top tips on how to choose the best running shoes will help the beginner to the advanced runner in choosing an excellent pair of shoes to help him or her with their training and racing.
