I sat down for a chat with the film’s straight, Jewish director, Jake Witzenfeld. We talked about how political homosexuality in the face of conflict can be, what Jake learned about himself while directing it, and I got some insight into the creative process he went through along the way. It’s rare to find an English speaker in Israel who hasn’t heard of the Facebook group Secret Tel Aviv or the man behind it, Jonny Stark. We talk about his organization’s mission, their methods, and what it means to him to be both a Jew and a follower of Christ. Yes, Messianic Jews are Jews who believe in Jesus. No, it’s not the same thing as Jews for Jesus. Yes, I was circumcized. No, my family didn’t celebrate Christmas… Now I’m secular. I no longer hold to the religious doctrines my parents taught me, but I still really enjoy dialoguing about it.
