3 Lessons Learned from Seahawks’ Super Bowl Loss (lfmm 088)

Tonight I watched my beloved Seattle Seahawks lose in excruciating fashion to the New England Patriots. And I’m a glutton for punishment, so I didn’t just turn the TV off when the game ended – I stuck around for the press conferences. The thing was, though, when I listened to what the guys were saying, I heard some great lessons for law firm owners and for life in general, so I thought I’d share them here. To find out what they are, listen to the podcast… The post 3 Lessons Learned from Seahawks’ Super Bowl Loss (lfmm 088) appeared first on Law Firm Marketing Mastery.

LFMM 082: Preston Clark of Law Insider

In this episode of the Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast I speak with Law Insider founder Preston Clark. One of the cool things about Preston is he’s taken his law firm education and applied it outside of the legal field. Yes, he was a lawyer for a bit, but soon after entering the real world realized his passion was elsewhere (he talks all about this in the interview). What Preston does have is a wealth of knowledge for marketing and sales. And he was kind enough to share his best stuff with us. Hit the play button. You won’t be sorry. LFMM 080: 5K Law Firm Startup

I got an email the other day from Wayne. Wayne wanted to know what I’d do if I had $5,000 and had to start a law firm all over again. Instead of just telling Wayne, I thought I’d tell all of you. It just seemed like the right thing to do. The funny thing about this question is that when I originally started my firm in 2009 I started with exactly $5,000 (I talk about it in the podcast – listen if you want the details). 5K Law Firm Startup Show Notes These show notes are actually important because I talked about a bunch of stuff that I’d be using if I were starting a law firm again (and I know a ton of you want to know how to start a law firm). LFMM 079: Law Firm SEO Explained

You can’t even think about starting a law firm without hearing someone talk about law firm SEO. It’s the buzzword of the decade. But, for all the talk of SEO, there aren’t very many people out there who know what it is or how it works. Today I’m here to pull back the curtain, at least about what I know about it. Law Firm SEO Experience The cool thing about my experience with SEO is that I got into it before I even opened my law firm. It’s fair to say I was a little bit of an internet marketer back in the day. That means I would target a keyword (think cufflinks), I would build a website for that keyword, I would create traffic for that website (this is where SEO came into play) and then I would sell stuff on the site. That is pretty much what we do today, right? We offer legal services and we want people to find us so they can purchase them when they need them. The Dark Side of Law Firm SEO Before I get to the explanation I want to talk about one other thing real quick: the dark side of law firm SEO. What I mean by that is all the scandalous shit companies do to try to get your site ranking high in google. This includes link farms, buying links, article spinning, duplicate content, and article generation. This stuff used to work (I know because I used to do it). IT DOES NOT WORK ANY MORE! Law Firm SEO Explained Without further adieu, this week’s podcast: Know You Should be Creating Content but Aren’t Sure What to Do? I’ve created a free report outlining exactly how I think of ideas, create content, distribute content, and use it to get clients. And I’m giving it to you for FREE. LFMM 077: How do I Find Time to Work On My Law Firm?

I got a question from one of the members of Law Firm Confidential today that I thought would be a great topic for a podcast. Here’s the email: Chris, I wanted to shoot you an email and ask a question of you. You can either answer me directly or feel free to do it in a podcast or email or something. My question is when do you take time to work on your law firm? Do you set aside some time each day, or do you set a big chunk during the week? The reason I am asking is because I find it easy to get a lot of things done if I set aside a big chunk of time but when things come up it’s really easy to cancel working on the firm and just take care of an issue. The podcast in law firm confidential are doing great . I don’t think my law firm would be close to a successful if I didn’t have these resources thanks for putting all the time and effort into them. No, thank you for working so hard on your firm. I do what I can to give you the tools, but you have to take the initiative to do the work. Great job! I think you’ll find the answer to your question quite surprising… How do I Find Time to Work on My Law Firm? For me staying focused boils down to two different things: My morning routine; and My time management system. I’m going to talk about both of them in today’s podcast. The Importance of a Morning Routine About two months ago I started doing a morning routine religiously. Here are just a few of the ones I talk about on the podcast: Batching Email management Ultra-focused time If you want the rest, listen to the podcast! LFMM 074: Law Firm Internet Marketing Expert Marc Cerniglia

Law firm internet marketing can seem like some mystical, impossible to understand thing that successful attorneys somehow have control over. Talk to any attorney and you will immediately hear buzzwords like SEO, email marketing, adwords, and social media marketing. The truth is probably 1% of the people talking about this stuff actually understand it. The other 99% just don’t want to seem uninformed. Today you enter the 1%. Marc Cerniglia, Law Firm Internet Marketing Expert One of the questions I most often get from listeners and readers is “what should I do with my website that will get me clients?” If you’ve been asking this question, then today is your lucky day. My guest today has spent the last several years thinking about how to make the internet work for you, making it work for clients, and teaching people how to build a strong business foundation on the internet. He is the co-founder of One Marketing, a company that helps law firms create professional websites and then provide ongoing marketing that drivers traffic to the site and makes you look like an expert all at the same time. It is my pleasure to welcome to the show Marc Cerniglia. LFMM 073: The Slight Edge (part 3)

If you missed part 1 of the Slight Edge. click here. If you missed part 2, click here. Where the Rubber Meets the Road This final discussion of the book is probably the most important. Yes, there is still some discussion on theory, but there is a lot more in this section on implementation and using the Slight Edge practice in your daily life. For example, there are 7 daily habits discussed that are game changers: Show up. Be consistent. Have a positive outlook. Be committed for the long haul. Cultivate a burning desire backed by faith. Be willing to pay the price. Practice slight edge integrity. To learn more about these slight edge habits and how to incorporate them to make your law firm successful, watch this video. Favorite Quotes from The Slight Edge If you haven’t read the book, you can get it here: The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness And you should get it. But, in the meantime, here are a few of my favorite quotes. Listen to the podcast to get some context for these quotes in my business. The slight edge is a process. You are constantly choosing which way you go: up with the 5 percent, or down with the 95 percent. You don’t just make that choice once and then say “ahh, I’m finished, now I’m all set.” You make that choice moment to moment to moment – and keep making it, every month and every day, for the rest of your life. You are the combined average of the five people you associate with the most – including the way you walk, talk, act, think, and dress. Your income, your accomplishments, even your values and philosophy will reflect them. Being productive and being busy are not necessarily the same thing. Doing things won’t create your success; doing the right things will. Trying to get rid of an unwanted habit is a bit like trying not to think about an elephant (the more you try not to think about it, the more you think about it). That’s because what you focus on, grows. It’s tough to get rid of the habit you don’t want by facing it head on. The way to accomplish it is to replace the unwanted habit with another habit that you do want. There are a lot more than that in this week’s podcast, plus some tidbits about how I put these quotes into practice on a daily basis. Enjoy! Want to Be Part of a Group that will Help You Reach Your Goals? I know one of the toughest things about starting and building a law firm is accountability. There is no one there to make sure you are doing the things you know you should be doing to get ahead. I know the second toughest thing about starting and building a successful law firm is not having anyone to bounce ideas off of that has the mindset of an entrepreneur, that is going to provide constructive feedback and help you take your initial idea and turn into into meaningful action. LFMM 072: Law Firm Management Expert Haley Odom Ackerman

It is my honor this week to talk to Haley Odom Ackerman, a former paralegal turned law firm consultant focusing on technology, efficiency, and practice management. If you know your firm needs to incoroporate more technology but you just aren’t sure where to get started, then this interview is a must listen for you. We also talk about how she got one of her articles featured on the front page of the Texas bar journal and how she’s amassed 3000 subscribers to her blog at odomackerman.com. Can Great Law Firm Management Make You More Money Haley Odom Ackerman seems to think so (and I’d agree with her 100%). When she started life as a paralegal she had a bird’s eye view into the way law firms were run. She had the opportunity to see law firms that had great organization and those that had poor organization. She was so driven to talk about her experiences and help other law firm owners out there that she started a blog – odomackerman.com. Originally that blog was about helping other paralegals navigate the shark infested waters of a law firm, but eventually she turned to providing solutions to law firms. And that’s where she is now, consulting law firms both big and small on things like case management, document management, and contact management to help them squeeze every bit of efficiency, and as a result revenue, out of each case. In this interview we dive into how analytics and software can help you supercharge your law firm. In addition to that, we talk about: The five analytics reports you should be running every week; The first two or three things every new law firm should focus on; How to hire a great paralegal; How to use your paralegal for maximum effectiveness; How to create a solid technical infrastructure; and Much much more! LFMM 071: The Slight Edge (Part 2)

via howleadersmanage.com Successful People Do What Unsuccessful People Won’t Do We’re back with another episode of the Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast and we’re continuing with our journey through the The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness by Jeff Olson (you can listen to part 1 here. I’ve never done this kind of in depth analysis of a book on this podcast before, and I think that speaks to the impact this book has had on the way I do things. What I love about this book is it took a philosophy I generally understood and lived by and provided a road map to exponentially increase my productivity, my happiness, and my success. And this episode is chock full of just as much value as part 1. Slight Edge Analysis Part 2 Act “As If” to Reach Your Fullest Potential One of the big lessons in this podcast is the idea of thinking about what your best self is like. Think about who you want to be. If you want to be the best lawyer in the world, think about who that person is, how they act, what they do on a daily basis, and what’s important to them. If you want to be the best business owner in the world, do the same. And then today, as you go through your day, start making decisions based on what you think that person would do. For example, if you want to be the best attorney in the world, when it’s time to clock out and you haven’t read the daily case decisions released by your state’s supreme court, what do you do? What would that amazing attorney do? Would they read those cases? If so, maybe you should do that. When you are tired and thinking about being satisfied with your work product even though you know it’s not the best, what do you do? What would an amazing attorney do? How does the best attorney in the world walk into a room? How do they act when they are in the company of other great attorneys? How to they dress? How do they talk to people? These are the slight edge choices that will skyrocket you to success. Want to Be Part of a Group that will Help You Reach Your Goals? I know one of the toughest things about starting and building a law firm is accountability. There is no one there to make sure you are doing the things you know you should be doing to get ahead. LFMM 070: The Slight Edge (part 1)

image from houseofshine.com This is the Book that Will Change Your Life I read a ton of books. And I recommend a ton of books (click here for a list of my must read books). This book is a game changer. Here’s the back story. I’m starting this new podcast called “Successful in Seattle” (if you don’t want to miss out on that, and you don’t, click here) where I interview successful people in Seattle to learn how they got where they are and what lessons they learned in the process. I also ask for one book they recommend. One of my interviewees told me he always recommends “The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness” by Jeff Olson. He told me he reads it at least once a year. And he’s the type of guy that when he tells me what he reads, I want to read it. So I bought it, and I’ve been thinking about it and implementing it ever since. I Want to Share the Slight Edge with You I know that 99% of you aren’t going to read this book. That’s just one of the sad parts of what I do. I could tell you this book would save your business, save your life, and most of you still wouldn’t read it. That’s the slight edge at work. Just the opposite way. But I digress. I knew that you wouldn’t read this book, but I still wanted to share it with you. I wanted to share the parts of it that resonated with me. And then I remembered I had a podcast that would be perfect for that. And here we are. What I’m Doing in the Podcast Episode This podcast is pretty simple – I go through and read the quotes out of the book that and talk about how they apply to starting and building a successful law firm. You will notice that this is part 1. There was too much great stuff to say about this book so I had to split it up into at least 2 episodes (we’ll see how far we get with the next episode). And that’s that. Enjoy. And listen with intention. This book can change your life if you let it. Make today the day that you make the decision that best for you in the long term. What do you think? Are you buying into this? I would love to know your thoughts about this episode. Leave a comment or email me and tell me whether or not this information is resonating with you, and why it is or isn’t.
