James challenges us to “look in the mirror.” Look intently into the Word of God and when God shows us some part of our lives that needs to be changed, then do what it says. If you don’t it would be like looking into the mirror and seeing something you had for breakfast stuck between your teeth and not removing it before a client meeting. We wouldn’t do that would we? The bible describes two types of temptation. Jesus was tempted for 40 days in the wilderness, fasting and praying. The Spirit of God led him into the wilderness and allowed the devil to throw everything he had at him. He offered him food, power, position, the earth itself. Jesus turned him down. He passed the test. It was not his Father’s will for him. This strengthened him and prepared him for his public ministry and to give his life as a ransom to all who would put their trust in him. The temptation that James talks about here in James 1:13-15 is the temptation that comes from the evil desires that come from within our own evil thoughts, out of our own hearts. As Christ followers, James instructs us how we should approach the various trials we encounter in life. He used trials to make us more dependent on Him for all of our needs and enables us to receive His transforming grace. When we are in a trial, we are tempted to doubt God’s word and to take matters into our hands. But we are called to wait on Him to give us wisdom and light. Whatever we are going through and whatever temptations we face, it is wonderful to remember that God is never the one tempting us to see if we will step away from Him.
