In 1977, Jim Henson, having found success with The Muppet Show, began experimenting with new technology and storytelling styles in the hopes of developing a feature film. Adapting a children's book by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban, itself an adaptation of the classic O. Henry short story "The Gift of Magi," Henson and his production team created a one-hour Christmas special that premiered in Canada on CBC and aired the following year on the then-new HBO channel. Featuring several original songs written by frequent Henson collaborator Paul Williams, subsequent airings on ABC and Nickelodeon, along with home video releases, cemented the quirky special's popularity. In the year 2000, the estate of children's author Theodor Geisel, better known by his pen name Dr. Seuss, sold the live-action movie rights to one of the writer's most beloved works. Decades earlier, an animated television special brought to life, via the voice of Boris Karloff and the talents of Chuck Jones, the cranky green curmudgeon known simply as The Grinch. With a plot to steal Christmas from the irrepressibly cheerful Whos of Whoville, the Grinch and his dog Max discover the true meaning of the holiday in this perennial holiday viewing favorite. After a rocky production, director Ron Howard reimagined the cartoon in living color with Jim Carrey donning yellow contact lenses and a dyed-green yak fur suit as The Grinch. The movie, despite mixed reviews, was box office gold, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and taking home an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. In 1946, director Frank Capra brought to the big screen the tale of George Bailey of Bedford Falls, in an inversion of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Instead of teaching a miserly villain the error of his ways by showing him his life's low points, Capra revealed that a good man's good deeds prove one man's life has worth beyond measure. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Henry Travers as the angel Clarence Oddbody, this film initially received mixed reviews and was unsuccessful at the box office, despite the fact that it was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Without significant interest, the film's copyright in the U.S. expired in 1974 and it entered the public domain, allowing it to be broadcast without licensing or royalty fees. Broadcast at almost no cost by local television stations, the film grew to become an annual Christmas classic. Turning 80 next year, it is now regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made, but will inconsistent streaming options and copyright issues make us wish this movie had never been filmed? Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit! Forty years ago, director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale, partnering with Steven Spielberg as producer, introduced one of the most iconic time machines to ever grace the big screen: Doc Brown's DeLorean. But the road to bringing it to life was rocky - their pitch was rejected more than forty times, and when it was finally greenlit, it had a tiny budget, and their dream lead actor, Michael J. Fox, wasn't available. Once the cameras rolled, they quickly realized that their replacement lead, Eric Stoltz, wasn't working out. After a series of false starts, the movie ended up performing well with test audiences, and in a sign of confidence, the studio, Universal, ended up moving up the release date to July 3rd, leaving almost no time to finish the movie's special effects. Nevertheless, the result was a hit. It became the highest-grossing film of 1985, won three Oscars, spawned two sequels, an animated series, and a musical, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. In 2004, independent filmmaker Shane Carruth released his first feature, a time travel twister made on a budget of $7,000. Carruth wrote, produced, directed, edited, scored, and starred in this film that won the Grand Jury Prize - Dramatic at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and went on to earn 120 times its budget. In the 77-minute film, two inventors discover time travel and exploit it for personal gain, but things quickly spin out of control. In 1998, Big and Dave screenwriter Gary Ross made his directorial debut with a quirky comedy starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon. The young up-and-coming stars were cast opposite stalwarts William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, and J.T. Walsh in a romp through classic television - literally. When a mischievous TV repairman (played, of course, by sitcom legend Don Knotts) sends the Ninties teens into a Fifties Leave It To Beaver knock-off, things only get stranger when their modern sensibilities start turning the black-and-white town all sorts of newfangled colors. Despite positive reviews and a first-place opening weekend, the film ultimately failed to enchant audiences and became a box office flop. It's Lobster's birthday, and what better way to acknowledge the toll aging takes on our bodies than to watch a movie about what goes wrong when we try to cheat the clock. From writer-director Coralie Fargeat comes the tale of Elizabeth Sparkle, a former sex symbol and acclaimed actress turned daytime tv aerobics instructor. When a mysterious treatment offers to restore her youthful appearance, the realization that beauty is only skin deep is only the first of many horrors that await. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in dual roles, this 2024 release burst onto the scene at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and Fargeat won Best Screenplay. After a wide release, which saw the film bring in $80 million through word-of-mouth social media marketing, it earned five Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Moore, taking home the statue for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. But appearance isn't everything, so let's take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if we like what we see. Is The Substance all style, and no substance? Or is it the stuff that dreams are made of? After nearly two decades in development hell, the long-awaited continuation of the 28 Days Later saga finally chewed its way into cinemas. Of course, things go sideways, and what starts as bonding turns into a fight for survival - and the realization that the living must face their own inner rage. Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. In 1982, director Steven Spielberg followed up Raiders of the Lost Ark with a family-centered feature about a young boy who meets an alien, based on his own childhood experience of creating an imaginary friend after his parents’ divorce. With a budget of just over $10 million, Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison brought the alien to life with the help of Italian special effects master Carlo Rambaldi, with the music of John Williams hitting all the right notes. Add in some product placement from Reese’s Pieces (let’s not talk about that Atari video game) and a stellar young cast including Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore, and the flick was a hit. In fact, it surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park broke the record in 1993. Much of the film feels iconic now, from William’s score to the flying bikes. Critic Roger Ebert, in an essay he wrote in 2002 as a letter to his grandchildren about watching it with them, wrote of that moment: “I remember when I saw the movie at Cannes. Even the audience there, people who had seen thousands of movies, let out a whoop at that moment.” But despite the praise, it’s worth remembering that Columbia Pictures put the film in turnaround, and M&Ms passed on the opportunity to feature their candy because they thought the film would scare children. So, over 40 years since its release, is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial still worth phoning home about? Or is it better left in the back of the childhood closet? Director Ridley Scott returned to outer space with the 2013 Alien prequel Prometheus, set on a distant world, and two years later, when he adapted Andy Weir’s best-selling 2011 novel, Scott visited another extraterrestrial destination, albeit one relatively closer to home: Mars. On the Red Planet, Matt Damon plays an astronaut stranded by fate who must survive in the harsh environment while his NASA colleagues come up with plans to rescue him. It’s autumn in New York, and we’re feeling the love with another Nora Ephron rom-com. This week, we’re dialing up the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan tale of “boy meets girl in internet chat room, boy discovers girl's true identity, and then boy kills girl’s business and destroys her livelihood.” Audiences loved the third team-up of Hanks & Ryan (following Joe Versus the Volcano and Sleepless in Seattle) in this flick that retells Miklós László’s 1937 play Parfumerie, which had previously been adapted as The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 and In the Good Old Summertime in 1949. Updated for the early online era, this version features an ensemble including Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Steve Zahn, Dave Chappelle, and Jean Stapleton. Although the movie booked over $250 million at the box office, not all critics penned rave reviews. One reviewer called the film “almost unwatchably saccharine, representing pretty much everything wrong with today's big-budget, high-concept Hollywood filmmaking,” while others bemoaned its rampant product placement. Less than two years after its release, the corporate marriage was consummated when America Online, the originator of the film’s titular salutation, and studio Warner Bros. merged to form AOL Time Warner. We’ve almost run out of time for Aug-Heist: The Getaway, but not before we go on the run with one final film. This week, we’re finally doing a proper prison break movie with a little-seen 2010 slow-burn thriller from director Paul Haggis, who won back-to-back Best Picture Oscars with Million Dollar Baby and Crash. Russell Crowe stars as a husband willing to go to any length to free his wrongly convicted wife from prison, even if that means breaking her out himself. Co-starring Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Lennie James, Brian Dennehy, Liam Neeson, the film adapts the 2008 French release Anything for Her (Pour Elle) and was filmed on location in Pittsburgh. But with a dead-on 50% Tomatometer score, what final verdict will our hosts hand down? This week on Aug-Heist: The Getaway, director Quentin Tarantino brings us his debut outing, Reservoir Dogs! As a video-store clerk turned first-time filmmaker, he directed, wrote, and appeared in this indie hit, which took Sundance by storm as part of the “Class of ‘92.” The film follows six suited, code-named strangers - including Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, and Tarantino himself - brought together for a jewelry heist. While the film never shows the actual heist, the lead-up and aftermath are explored in bloody detail, as the Dogs turn on each other when the job goes south. Boasting all of his directorial hallmarks - graphic violence, extended dialogue featuring profanity and references to popular culture, and epic needledrops (here in the form of K-Billy's Super Sounds of the Seventies) - the film immediately established Tarantino as a made man in Hollywood and was later named the greatest independent film of all time by Empire Magazine.
