If You Can’t Read Your Team, You’re Not Leading It - Part One

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Most leaders think they know their teams. They don’t. And that blind spot is costing them more than they realize. Leaders aren’t reading their teams—they’re guessing. Projecting. Avoiding. Hiding behind data instead of having real conversations. Some don’t know their people at all. Others think they do—and are completely wrong. Quite frankly, this is not just a soft skill! And what you don’t see in your team will eventually hurt you. Quiet quitting. Hidden resistance. Talent walking out the door. Decisions made in the dark. Join Rich and Maikel as we shoot straight at the real reasons leaders fail to read their teams—and how to fix it before it becomes a leadership liability- in this first part of a two-part series on Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. #Leadership #ExecutiveLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment #Culture #Trust #EmployeeEngagement #JohnMattoneGlobal Leaders, Lead Well! In this must-listen episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT, Katarina Polonska delivers a powerful reminder that leadership is never confined to the boardroom — it is shaped, tested, and revealed in our closest personal relationships. If leadership is influence, then influence begins in relationship. This episode challenges leaders to examine the inner architecture behind their performance — and offers critical insight into how strengthening personal relationships can elevate clarity, trust, and impact at the highest levels. Leadership Beyond the Org Chart with Global CHRO Patrick Duriaux

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Most organizations say they have a succession plan. Very few are actually do. The simple fact is this: succession planning is not about replacing people. It’s about building leadership capacity and ensuring continuity—before risk turns into reality. Yet too often, succession planning is treated like an emergency response instead of a strategic priority. And when there’s no real plan, the cost is high: eroded culture, stalled strategy, and a loss of trust at the very top. It’s no wonder boards are increasingly nervous about leadership pipelines. Once again, we are joined by Patrick Duriaux, a globally recognized authority in HR and succession planning. Patrick is a global CHRO and seasoned HR leader with over twenty years of experience driving cultural transformation, leadership development, and performance improvement in international organizations. A certified Intelligent Leadership® Master Coach trained by John Mattone, he brings more than a decade of coaching expertise focused on emotional intelligence, human connection, and purposeful growth.  Patrick joins Rich and Maikel as we reframe succession planning for what it truly is—not an HR process, but a strategic leadership system. Not a conversation about today’s roles, but a future-focused dialogue about capability, readiness, and leadership maturity.   Because real succession planning sends a powerful culture signal:  We don’t just fill roles here. We develop leaders. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! The Death of the Hero CEO: Why Collective Leadership Wins in 2026

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! For decades, organizations have been built around the idea of the heroic CEO—the singular visionary, chief decision-maker, and ultimate problem solver. But in 2026, that model is breaking down. In today’s environment of complexity, speed, AI acceleration, and constant disruption, leadership can no longer sit at the top of a single individual. The hero CEO doesn’t scale. It concentrates risk, slows decision-making, and quietly undermines trust and accountability across the organization. If you’re a senior leader, board member, or executive coach navigating the realities of leadership in 2026, this conversation challenges some of the most deeply held assumptions about power, control, and what it truly means to lead. Join Rich and Maikel on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT as we explore why the era of the hero CEO is ending—and why collective leadership is emerging as the only sustainable model for high-performing organizations. We unpack what collective leadership really means (and what it doesn’t), the hidden costs of over-centralized leadership, and the inner shifts CEOs must make to move from being “the answer” to becoming the architect of leadership systems. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Renewal of Leadership and Teams — A Fresh Start for 2026

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! As we close out 2025, one thing is clear: leaders and teams can’t simply optimize their way into the future — they must renew. In a world shaped by rapid AI advancement, hybrid work, and ongoing uncertainty, renewal is no longer a soft idea. It’s a strategic reset. This episode explores what renewal of leadership and teams truly means as we move into 2026. Renewal isn’t about adding more — it’s about releasing what no longer serves us: outdated behaviors, rigid structures, and fear-based cultures — and amplifying what does: trust, empathy, agility, and human connection. For leaders, renewal means shifting from reactive problem-solvers to proactive navigators. It requires pairing human judgment with AI fluency, leading with greater self-awareness, and building cultures grounded in psychological safety and truth-telling. Less hierarchy and control — more clarity, courage, and ethical decision-making. For teams, renewal shows up as energy, ownership, and adaptability. The highest-performing teams in 2026 are psychologically safe, hybrid by design, skills-focused, and deeply accountable. They break down silos, learn through experimentation, and grow through coaching, mentoring, and real-time feedback. We also outline a practical roadmap for renewal: Reflect and release what’s holding leaders and teams back Set antifragile goals that align growth with purpose Invest in development through coaching, mentorship, and AI-enabled learning Foster collaboration through flatter structures and shared ownership Measure, adapt, and celebrate progress to sustain momentum Ultimately, renewal isn’t a one-time initiative — it’s a continuous cycle. Organizations that commit to it build stronger cultures, make better decisions, and achieve more sustainable performance. Join Rich and Maikel on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT, as we challenge leaders to rethink renewal — not by adding more, but by letting go of what no longer serves their teams.  Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Beyond Performance: Who Really Becomes a World-Class Executive

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Most organizations still confuse performance with potential. They take a standout performer, move them up… and then wonder why that person struggles in the role they’ve been thrown into. The reality? There’s a huge difference between being a high performer and being a high-potential leader. One gets results.  The other shapes the future.  One executes today.  The other transforms tomorrow. If you want to become a world-class executive—a leader who builds culture, empowers people, and drives bold, sustainable outcomes—you can’t rely on performance alone. You have to develop the competencies, courage, and character that define true high-potential leadership. Because at the end of the day, you can’t outperform a lack of leadership maturity. In this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT, Rich and Maikel break down the real difference between high performers and high potentials—and why only one of them consistently makes it to the executive level. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! We truly hope that what we bring to our listeners will improve your ability as leaders. Awareness is the New Power: Redefining Leadership and Culture

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Transformation doesn’t begin with a memo, a mission statement, or a new initiative. It begins with awareness — the moment a leader realizes that culture isn’t what’s written on the wall… it’s what’s tolerated in the hall. Dr. Peter James is an executive coach, former U.S. Army officer, academic, and organizational leader. Peter has spent over two decades working at the intersection of leadership, culture, and change: from platoon to boardroom, from classroom to executive suite. His experience spans military command, Fortune 100 business, university faculty leadership, and coaching executives through transformational change.  Peter joins Rich and Maikel as we dive deep into transformational change — not as a corporate buzzword, but as a living, breathing shift in leadership identity and organizational culture. We’ll explore how situational awareness—the ability of a leader to sense, interpret, and respond to what’s really happening in the system can ignite or derail cultural transformation. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! From Unnoticeable to Undeniable: How Executive Coaching Transforms Presence into Impact

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Every organization has them — brilliant, hard-working leaders who remain unnoticed. They’re the ones who deliver, who meet every target, but who somehow stay under the radar. It’s not because they lack talent. More often, it’s because they’ve learned to play small… to wait their turn… to let others take the stage. But here’s the truth: you can’t create impact while staying invisible. Leadership starts with presence. And presence isn’t about being loud — it’s about being clear. So, here’s our question for you: Where are you still playing small? What part of your leadership have you been keeping safe… waiting to be noticed? Rich and Maikel explore the powerful truth that you don’t need permission to be seen. Executive coaching isn’t about repairing what’s broken — it’s about awakening the brilliance that’s already within you. Tune in to this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT and discover how to move from invisible to unforgettable.  Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Beyond Talk: Systemic Shifts That Change Culture

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Culture is everywhere in leadership conversations. Executives call it a top priority. They launch new values campaigns, roll out wellbeing programs, rewrite mission statements, and deliver heartfelt talks about trust and purpose. But here’s the tension: for all the activity, something isn’t landing. In many organizations, the more leaders talk about culture, the more hollow it feels — especially when the systems and actions behind the words don’t line up.  In today’s episode we’re diving into a counterintuitive insight from a recent Harvard Business Review article: culture isn’t changed by fancy slogans or stirring speeches. It’s changed by the systems — incentives, processes, workflows, structural design — that guide day-to-day behavior.  Join Rich and Maikel as we break down why leaders who rely solely on messaging often fall short, how systemic design outpaces communication, and concrete steps you can take to rewire your organization’s cultural architecture in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! The Lie That’s Killing Trust at Work

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Let's take a hard look at one of the most celebrated buzzwords in modern organizations: “speak-up culture.” On paper, it sounds empowering. It promises openness, authenticity, and progress. But the truth is—this concept is overrated, misunderstood, and in many cases dangerously misleading. This conversation is inspired by Gina Battye’s powerful article, “Why ‘speak up culture’ is a lie” published in Fast Company on September 15, 2025.  Battye argues that “speak-up culture” has become more of a corporate comfort blanket than a genuine solution—creating the illusion of safety while ignoring the real work of cultural transformation. We couldn't agree more! The irony is clear: when organizations genuinely foster psychological safety, people naturally feel empowered to speak up—no need for posters or hollow slogans, no pressure—just genuine trust and collaboration.   Join Rich and Maikel as we speak up on Battye’s deeper point: psychological safety isn’t a corporate slogan or a shared belief—it’s a deeply personal, moment-to-moment state that shifts depending on context, relationships, and environment. All this on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! The Leadership Divide: Fear vs. Aspiration — Part 2: The Power of Aspirational Leadership

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! In our last episode, we uncovered the hidden costs of fear-driven leadership—how it weakens trust, limits innovation, and leaves organizations stuck in survival mode. Today, in Part 2 of our series, we shift our focus to the other side of the leadership divide: aspirational leadership. This is where vision, purpose, and inspiration become the driving forces. Aspirational leaders don’t just manage tasks—they ignite possibility. They cultivate cultures where people are motivated by hope and potential, not by fear and pressure. Join Rich and Maikel as we explore what defines aspirational leadership, the habits that set these leaders apart, and how organizations can foster this mindset to unlock resilience, creativity, and long-term success in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. The Leadership Divide: Fear vs. Aspiration — Part 1: The High Cost of Fear

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! The first in a two-part series on a powerful leadership contrast: Aspirational Leadership vs. Fear-Driven Leadership. In this opening conversation, we’re taking a deep dive into fear-driven leadership—what it looks like, how it shows up in organizations, and the impact it has on both culture and performance. Fear may create short-term compliance, but it erodes trust, stifles innovation, and leaves lasting damage to people and organizations alike. Simply put,  "Fear Rules, Vision Leads."  Over the next two episodes, we’ll unpack the dangers of leading through fear and contrast them with the transformative potential of aspirational leadership. By the end of this series, you’ll not only recognize the difference but also walk away with insights to elevate your own leadership journey. Join Rich and Maikel as we start by shining a light on fear-driven leadership—where it begins, how it spreads, and why it ultimately falls short on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Cultural Transformation: Which Comes First, Belief or Behavior?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! If you're serious about transforming your organizational culture, you must start at the top! Because when leaders change, everything changes. One of the most powerful levers for culture transformation is prioritizing executive coaching. When senior leaders engage in coaching, they don’t just evolve individually—they become catalysts for systemic change. From diagnosing cultural misalignment to scaling leadership cascades, coaching helps leaders clarify vision, shift mindsets, and build systems that embed values into the fabric of the organization. It’s not about slogans—it’s about behavior, belief, and accountability. Rich and Maikel talk in depth about why CEOs and senior leaders must look at themselves as the mirror of the organization and the catalyst for change on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. The Transparency Trap: How Manipulative Leaders Weaponize Openness

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! What can be one of the most insidious threats to organizational trust: the Transparency Thief. These are leaders who disguise manipulation as openness—soliciting vulnerability not to build connection, but to gain control. Drawing from psychology, leadership studies, the fall of global organizations, and even Shakespeare’s Iago, we’ll explore how deceptive transparency undermines team cohesion, erodes trust, and damages culture. More importantly, we’ll share practical ways to spot these behaviors, rebuild integrity, and lead with true character. If you’ve ever felt burned by someone who claimed to “just want open feedback”—only to use it as ammunition, this episode is a must listen. Join Rich and Maikel as they pull back the cover on the Transparency Thieves in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.  Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Decoding the Journey: From Assessment to Transformation with Dr. Nina Steigerwald

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! At John Mattone Global, we stand by a guiding principle: “Prescription before diagnosis is malpractice.” But what does that really mean in the context of leadership coaching—and how do we accurately diagnose a leader’s strengths and blind spots? Joining us today is Dr. Nina Steigerwald, an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist whose work is redefining how leaders grow—by combining data-driven insights with meaningful coaching. Dr. Steigerwald will walk us through how I/O Psychology informs every step of the coaching journey—from assessment design to deep personal transformation. She’ll shed light on common misconceptions about workplace surveys, the rising embrace of data-informed development, and how Intelligent Leadership translates psychological science into practical strategy. Whether you’re leading a team, guiding executives, or simply curious about how evidence can amplify empathy—this conversation highlights why assessments are more than metrics: they’re catalysts for change when guided by the right coaching philosophy. Dr. Nina Steigerwald joins Rich and Maikel for a deep dive into the science of leadership development and the indispensable role assessments play on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 100 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! What is one of the most overlooked threats to leadership effectiveness: Blind Spots. The Questions Only Great Leaders Dare To Ask

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! What sets great leaders apart from the mediocre? It’s not the title—they often hold the same one. The real difference lies in how they show up when it matters most: in moments of discomfort, uncertainty, and challenge. Great leaders dare to ask the questions others won’t. They lean into the bold, uncomfortable conversations that disrupt the status quo, expose blind spots, and spark real transformation. Because leadership isn’t about always having the answers—it’s about having the courage to ask the questions that truly matter. Join Rich and Maikel on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT as we explore what it means to lead with boldness, trust, and the courage to go deep. Leaders, Lead Well! Principled Under Fire: Leadership When It Counts

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Leadership, when it counts, is less about bravado, more about belief. Major Dick Winters was a highly respected leader known for his calm, decisive, and principled approach to leadership. Major Winters was a man who led with conviction, composure, and quiet strength through some of World War II’s fiercest battles. His leadership wasn’t loud—it was principled, even when under fire. As the commander of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, he led his men through some of the most intense battles of World War II, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. Major Winter's leadership style was built on leading from the front, earning respect through competence and character, and fostering teamwork and trust.  Simply put, leadership isn't defined in the calm—it’s forged in the storm. Join Rich and Maikel as we explore what it means to lead when it counts, and how Winters’ legacy offers a timeless blueprint for today’s executives navigating the fog of uncertainty on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Misguided Advocacy: The Rise of "Workplace Karens"

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! In modern workplaces, there are employees who consistently exhibit entitled, demanding, or overly critical behavior. Commonly referred to as “Workplace Karens” (a cultural term stemming from internet slang), these individuals often create friction within teams by resisting change, escalating minor issues, and expecting special treatment. While not necessarily malicious, their behaviors can disrupt workplace harmony and reduce overall productivity. In fact, workplace entitlement can contribute to resistance against new policies or leadership decisions, which is a common factor in why up to 70% of change initiatives fail. Employees who fit this description often feel strongly about perceived injustices, whether real or imagined, and may express frustration in ways that drain organizational energy. They frequently act from a place of misguided advocacy, believing they are fighting for fairness or exposing flaws, but their approach can be overly aggressive or unconstructive. Rich and Maikel tackle entitlement-driven negativity on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 90 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support! Leaders, What's The Deal?

Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well! Let's ask the question that’s been whispered in boardrooms and sidestepped in leadership circles: Why do so many executives avoid executive coaching? For some, it’s the fear of vulnerability—admitting they don’t have all the answers. For others, it’s the misconception that coaching is only for struggling leaders, not top performers. And let’s not forget the pressure to appear confident, competent, and in control. Afterall, you've made it to the corner office, so by default, you're already a master of the leadership craft. There's no need for a coach here. But here’s the truth: even the world’s greatest leaders—those who have built empires, transformed industries, and shaped the future—know that growth never stops. Coaching isn’t about fixing flaws; it’s about sharpening strengths. So why does resistance persist? Based on the book, "Accelerating Leadership," co-authored by Eric Hicks, PhD, PCC, and Lance Hazard, PCC, CPCC, we are discussing six specific values that executive coaching brings to leaders enhancing their success and abilities. Join Rich and Maikel as we explore the reasons why, as a leader, executive coaching should be a priority in your career on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Leaders, Lead Well! Thank you to all of our listeners in over 90 countries and now, 1,000 cities worldwide, we greatly appreciate your support!
