The Four Forms of Karate – Chapter 1

The Four Forms of Karate – Chapter 1. There are four forms of karate and this is not about the styles this is about the qualities that all systems process. This is the first of four types explained in this podcast. The first of these is Blockbuster. Zeal and trends make up the elements needed to make a Blockbuster. Zeal and trends are layering over the top of a pyramid based on three other elements; Fad, Presentism, and Trends. Four Forms of Karate and 3 Elements Karate Fads and More Karate Fads Fads in karate and fads as a general rule have a fast burn rate. That burn rate in their nature. But there is a use of the word Fad that needs guarding against. The last thing you should desire in a conversation is a casual and dismissive shutdown. Presentism The middle place has a role in karate. That middle is flexible. Larger than a fad Presentism can be condescending in its attitude. like comic book artist, Howard Chaykin referred to his industry. More on Chaykin in the podcast. Presentism can also be stable, and beneficial. Trends Comparing the 1861 Gatling gun to the flying gun called the A-10 Warthog. Those two seem to have nothing to do with martial arts yet it is an excellent example of a trend. The Gatling Gun Three Identifiers of Karate Blockbuster There are reasons each of these three identifiers exists and should get a good using. The Blockbuster lives in each of these three realms and so can ideas and directions of a moment in the art of karate. Steve Austin, The Six Million Dollar Man These three in the context of a Blockbuster, a crushing movement that sucks up all the oxygen and money, gets addressing. The nuances of how one may choose to observe their martial arts over the long run are given some thoughts to ponder. Be Your Own Karate Author

Be your own karate author. It is not about writing a martial arts book. This is about the authoring of your life. Taking control of your life, not your world, but focusing on your life. Be Your Own Karate Author Be Your Own Karate Author With Simple Commands Using simple commands, you can make a difference in your world. We have touched on, If this then that, (IFTTT) in the past. Simple commands. Simple commands are the best commands. The Claymore, not the sword, but the ball-bearing loaded explosive mine has a simple command on it, “Front Toward Enemy.” Getting that wrong and the incorrect people are wounded or killed. Martial Arts has simple commands, and it is also a beggar. Martial arts ask for you to invest in it and it gives you nothing tangible in return. Oh, sure a belt, some paper certificates but it is not a house or a boat. Traditional Environment in Which to Learn The martial arts have a framework of simple commands for success. Paying attention, be diligent, working on what you are taught are the keys. There may be more or different expressions but these three go a long way. These three are going the distance in applying oneself to the course that is set before you. This is a selection of a container. A traditional environment in which to learn, that is a vessel that gets filled with techniques and behaviors. This is the beginning of, be your own karate author. Beggars have nothing to give Another way to look at this situation is like that of a poker game. Martial arts, karate is only going to match your bet. Put one chip in the pot, karate will match you. It is not a case of, “All in.” Karate will not push all the chips in crushing your bet, it will match your bet. Because karate is s beggar – I know it sounds odd, but karate asks you to better first, to give first, and then it begins to match you. Karate Poker Matches You Chip-to-Chip It Is On You To Make the First Move To become an author of your karate, of your life, you need to understand it is on you. The groundwork building on simple commands for a bettering your existence is already laid out in front of you. You need only start the process. The old saw, of you, only get what you put into it, is true. Look at the simple commands of karate. Thinking of karate as a beggar who is playing poker with you may give a glimpse at a new view. At least a view to explore. Here are a few podcast you will find interesting A Modern View You Do Traditional Karate? Beyond Punching & Kicking See how we can connect. Click on my picture. Karate this is the Reason

Karate this is the Reason. We all understand there are many reasons for doing karate. Those reasons are personal and varied. The reasons range from, “I want to get in shape,” to “I want to learn to protect myself.” We are going to create a narrow focus. We are discussing a small but important idea. The reason for training, and we are going to use a dead Prussian General to do so. We are going to create a narrow focus. We are discussing a small but important idea. The reason for training, and we are going to use a dead Prussian General to do so. Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz Clausewitz wrote a book called, On War, or Vom Kriege. The book is a classic when it comes to war. His book and the ideas contained wherein are often quoted. Here are a few to prime the pump. Karate is the Reason and Few Points to Add to The Fact “The enemy of a good plan is the dream of a perfect plan.” That sounds like a modern business saying, “Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good.” Or, “No campaign plan survives first contact with the enemy.” And a favorite, “Two qualities are indispensable: first, an intellect that, even in the darkest hour, retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth; and second, the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead.” That sounds like every coach that ever coached. “Don’t give up.” In the simplest of terms validation of ideas that have other independent validation are likely pretty solid in their standing. The narrow focus we have for our purposes is the classic, “War is not an independent phenomenon, but the continuation of politics by different means.” The Narrow Focus Brings Clarity What if you took that quote and replaced the word War, with Self-Defense? And to sharpen the reframe remove, Politics and inserted “Bad situation?” Victory is the Reason for Karate Then the quote with our narrow focus becomes “Self-Defense is not an independent phenomenon, but the continuation of a bad situation by different means.” Winning the Moment We break down the idea here and flesh it out adding the context of a lifetime and the act of self-defense. You will be surprised by the comparison. Here are a few podcast you will find interesting I Don’t Teach Kids Karate Little Value to a Black Belt Strong Karate Teacher See how we can connect. Karate and Tai Chi, Sleek and Stunning

Karate and Tai Chi, Sleek and Stunning. The stick and the hammer of karate were the topics of the Patreon post. And it started a brief conversation about a trip hammer and its role in martial arts. A trip hammer is a tool, used by a Blacksmith to create a repetitive motion. This hammer is used in pounding hot metal or iron during the shaping process. A trip hammer is thoughtless. The trip hammer motion takes little understanding it is clear. Often a trip hammer is built around circular motions becoming a linear act. A blacksmith hand forging To see what a tip hammer looks like in use and watch the motions involved, here is a link to a Youtube video. Watch a blacksmith forging using a trip hammer. Finding The Trip Hammer in Tai Chi It can be difficult to find the martial arts trip hammer. It is especially difficult in a softer system as it is not conducive to such observation. One way of seeing karate and tai chi is digital versus analog. Analog verses Digital You could look at the WUKO kata championships and see the stop and start of techniques. No such form of competitions are known about Tai Chi. The moment the trip hammer starting and finishing is easy to see in karate. These motions are not easily seen in some other arts when comparing them to karate. Both forms of martial arts are sleek and stunning. Yet they appear to far apart in the capacity of data, initiation, and action. Arch Bridge and The Pontoon Bridge The Single whip movement of Tai Chi starts someplace. The question is where does it begin. Where does the trip hammer begin? How do you find the beginning position, the beginning data dot? Usually at contact, but it can begin before. It is easier to see the information at the contact point. It is important to note some initiation points can be feet or inches before contact. The Classic Roman Arch There is much more contained in the podcast linked below. Learn about turning an arch into a line and a line into a dot to increase your understanding of the martial arts. Your Karate Teacher Died, Now What?

Your karate teacher died, now what? That sounds caviler kind of a cast-off statement. It is almost as if it is a statement about floor wax from a mid-afternoon television show. It is not is the real question. The death of a teacher has happened to me before but this one gut punched me. The sorting of how this needs ordering. The responses both short term and long-term need addressing. And in doing so there may be a handle for you got to grab onto for the future. Or the handles allowing you to reach back into the past and secure a grip on an experience or emotion. We are all going to die, but we just don’t believe it. Growing up in post-war Japan in the Shinjuku district life was hard. He told me stories of hunger and hardship. These stories came infrequently, yet helped explain his worldview. Your Karate Teacher Died, Now What? A Priest and Burial. Graveyards are full of the greatest people I have buried the greatest father a hundred times. And we have likely buried the greatest karate sensei a hundred times. The result of this emotion is to try and acknowledge the impact the sensei has had, a foundation may be created, an award given out on an annual basis. You may use this when you karate teacher dies, or when another person passes. I have done this and it has been with little results. People are focusing on living. Getting results for themselves, and not a plaque on a wall. A plaque about somebody else’s journey. Or the of overcoming the obstacles placed before them in life. Teaching Good, or Bad There is either good karate or bad karate, that is it. After the death of Ito, the people are coming out of the woodwork. The people are reaching out from Asia, Europe, the Americas. Further, Ito never had a dojo he traveled from dojo to dojo. He never wanted a dojo and he never wanted an organization. It was about Karate. Good karate or bad karate. That was it. The Last Samurai The Last Samurai The movie is a story as old as the human experience. A man empties his cup and replaces it with a new structure that serves his purpose. And that the new structure that renews of purpose and self. Is the story of me and my sensei the same as the movie The Last Samurai? No, no it’s not, and yet there are a few similarities that can be seen. You too will have these similarities with your teacher. If you look at your relationship with a little squint when the light hits right. This is where you find the handles for the experience and the emotions. The story then becomes how do you take the good things and push them forward. The way they lived and not the way they died. Your Two Truths of Karate

Your Two Truths of Karate gets pushed into the second half of the show. A little deviation from the main topic. The problems of vendors and the world we have right now. The pleasant and the can-do people of the world are facing a deep challenge and we need to take a step back and allow these folks some slack. A New Form of Measuring Time A 21-minute wait turns into four loads of laundry. Is it the folks who are manning the phones responsible? No, people are losing their minds. The folks on the front lines are doing their best to do their jobs in difficult circumstances. These situations are no fault of the folks on the front lines. Be patient and do your laundry. Your Two Truths of Karate The two worlds are the worlds of science and the other is the world of the symbol. One believes itself to be true, right, and correct. That true right and correct is science. Symbols lean into the deeper look. You can go so far are to transpose the ideas of each of these viewpoints and the statements will read just as valid. Science leans into the deeper look. Symbols are about what is correct. Measuring of Two Worlds We Can Hold Those Ideas Both of us can hold those ideas in our minds at the same time. We can do so even when each position, that of science and that of symbol are trying to dismiss each other. The old joke is that in the war between cats and dogs, dogs must not only win but cats must lose. When we all know, or have households where both co-exist. Science Works Well Science tells us what things are, this is a solid that is fluid, that is a planet. Codifications and taxonomy are means of breaking the world down into bite-size chunks. Symbols are peeking behind the veil. Now, we are going to go down the rabbit hole of Christ, Buddha, Hippocrates, the Black Plague, Vermin, and miasma. Enjoy the podcast at the link below. Making Your Karate Like a Kid

Making your karate like a kid is something to pursue. Not every attributive of being a kid but a specific item. While working with a student the other night the topic of rigidity raised its head once again. I inherited a brown belt from another school. She trains in the same style but a different expression, a different organization. We stopped in the middle of the flow drill and proclaimed, “I’m pretty stiff, ridged.” It wasn’t an observation of the moment but a declaration of herself who she is. I rejected that proclamation. Not in a harsh manner, but in an observational way. “No, you learned to be ridged, you weren’t born ridged.” Let’s try making your karate like a kid. Kids Move Smoothly Ridged Has its Place The drill is a flow drill. There are many versions of a flow drill, but the two categories are free to flow and prescribed flow. We were working a free flow. Free flow is extemporaneous and creative. The prescribed flow is a structured pattern of flow. Smooth and Flow Flowing with smoothness has an advantage. Smooth and flow is a combination of these two items. This combination makes it harder for a person to see what you are doing it. Flow helps avoid giving your opponent data points. Think of it as looking at a graph in a presentation. We are always looking for the high, the low, the significant. The data point is usually the highest item on the graph or the lowest. Trends of course are observed. But trends are secondary we want to see the unusual, the peaks and valleys. Smooth Can Increase Results The Smooth Drill When doing this drill, and you know this, but let’s underscore it. Slow down, move smoothly, take your time. It’s practice. Productivity Can Breed Success There are a couple of tips, suggestions on how you might apply this idea. The goal is to be more productive in learning. You can find those tips in the podcast. Some of the ideas, again, you may already know. Then there are a couple of nuggets that once employed are going to speed up the learning. Slow down, be smooth like a child at play, drop the adherence to rigidity. And as a disclaimer, this is not an all or nothing edict. It is a refocusing of attention to balance your training. To gain skill, and be well-rounded as you are on the path of karate and martial arts in general. Merit is Superior and The Romans Agree

Merit is superior and the Romans agree. Taking a walk down the road of history. History is often about perspective, the view used to examine the snapshot of time. The observing is often set with a predisposition of a desired outcome. Knowing that lets us dive into several historical examples of how merit is superior to credentials. The 80/20 rule or the Pareto Distribution is a good rule of thumb. Swirl in a big mix of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the world of merit begins to rise above credentialing. Simply put 20% of the people in the world are striving for growth regardless of the environment. Romans and Merit Titus Flavius Vespasianus Let’s look at Roman rulers, Vespasian, the father of the Titus and Marcus Aurelius, and his son Commodus. Looking for a fun movie with Marcus Aurelius, albeit a small role, Gladiator is your choice. You will also get a good dose of the insanity that was the megalomaniac Commodus. Gladiator, The Movie The Movie Gladiator We all remember seeing the movies where the protagonist gets a calling out with the statement, “You’ve changed, man.” The secret to this is the promotion of the environment. They know inside the new environment is allowing them to act the way they have always desired to act. The environment didn’t change them, they are who they are. This is an internal example of the title, Merit is superior and the romans agree. The Civil War The implication is the person who is of merit treats the environment differently. These folks are aware of the world around them and treat it differently than somebody with only credentialing. Of course, this is a broad statement yet to carry the majority of the argument. The Choice of Behavior in Merit or Credential The choices are ones we make on a yearly, monthly, daily basis. The merit of being, “Born to the purple,” as Commodus is quoted as saying, and how you choose to use it. Musashi Has Thoughts About Your Karate

Musashi has thoughts about your karate. Miyamoto Musashi dies in 1645 but he wrote some precepts (The Dokkodo) and a book, the Book of Five Rings, (Go Rin No Sho). Miyamoto Musashi I like you have come across copies of the Book of Five Rings. We have read it front to back and dipped into different chapters over the years. One book and one stanza have stood out to me for thirty-some years. Musashi and The Water Book An idea presented in the Water Book applies to the world of karate we have not. We have a world of karate dominated by entanglement. Entanglement is a bad thing and engaging in to is to be avoided. And you have a master telling you that. Here is the section we are addressing and the wisdom contained in the writing. The Water Book To Apply Stickiness. When the enemy attacks and you also attack with the long sword, you should go in with a sticky feeling and fix your long sword against the enemy’s as you receive his cut. The spirit of stickiness is not hitting very strongly, but hitting so that the long swords do not separate easily. It is best to approach as calmly as possible when hitting the enemy’s long sword with stickiness. The difference between “Stickiness” and “Entanglement” is that stickiness is firm and entanglement is weak. You must appreciate this. This is a profound policy and as said, Musashi has thoughts about your karate. When adopting this policy the question becomes, “How do you enter into stickiness and avoid entanglement?” The secrete lies in the approach. Reverse your process. We look at the moment of conflict from the entry point. Then we move through the process to the end of the moment to a point of completion. As you drill your martial arts with your partner know what the final act is and then seek that final act. This is not an easy task and requires focus and a slow process. Of course, you can get more information on this by listening to the podcast linked below. And of course, get more on Musashi has thoughts about your karate. The Treadmill of Karate Rank

The Treadmill of Karate Rank and the hedonic treadmill. The hedonic treadmill. (Here is a link to Psychology Today on the hedonic treadmill) Hedonism is a set of theories about pleasure and how it should be pursued in life. A treadmill is what we put hamsters on to keep them busy. Put these two things together in a mashup and you have the treadmill of karate rank. The World is Going to Rotate Ask any karate-ka what their favorite kata is and they are likely to say the name of the latest kata they learned. The older the practitioner the less likely they are to name the one they just learned. The reasons are there is no new kata and they have gotten over the shine of a new and exciting form. Having a goal is essential to motivation. If you have no goal the Earth rotates underneath you the Erath goes around the Sun and you die with no achievement. Not exactly the most positive or, up comment, but as true as true is. Goals and motivation, when well-placed make for an exciting and valuable life. Hedonic Treadmill The hedonic treadmill sets itself; it makes an average in life. Think of it as a constant line with a sine wave moving up and down through the constant centerline. Some days are up and others are down. Karate should not be subject to marketing, the creation of less and loss, the fear of missing out. (FOMO) yet it often shows up in the ranks. The desire to get a new rank to advance, to climb the ladder of skill is omnipresent. Yet the over-rotation into such behavior, desire is common. And why wouldn’t it be? There is an answer that can take the edge off this setpoint. The false treadmill created by the external world. You can listen to the solution in the podcast linked below. The Secret of Your Consistent Karate

The Secret of Your Consistent Karate. The secret is consistency, and we all know that is the secret. The reason it is hard to describe and share with others is the idea and behavior of consistency is baked into who we are. We benefit in all aspects of our lives because of our consistency. Inconsistency Kills Karate Inconsistency, on the other hand, kills everything. I challenge you to find anything in life that doesn’t get killed by inconsistency. I submit you cannot. That is why it is such an important part of what we do with our lives. The shadow of the gold watch for 20 years of service. It sounds horrid to me, yet it is not what it once was and is not the closing of life but the opening of a new phase of life. the second act. We all know of people that have entered into the military young. These folks have now left the military midlife. These folks leave with a pension, military benefits, and a new life – that new chapter. That experience is born of discipline. Big puppies, that is who we are. We respond to the Scooby snack. We desire a reward system. Praise is important, we love rewards. The basic rule of economics is, if you want more of something, pay for it. Praise and reward are forms of payment and we act like little puppies when either shows itself. The 80/20 rule or Pareto Distribution and The Secrete of Your Consistent Karate The rule is simple 20% of people do 80% of the work, 20% of the products a company offers result in 80% of the sales. This is a rule that applies to martial arts as well. 20% of the people who practice are going to give it the attention it requires. The secret of your Consistent karate is being in the 20% not the 80%. The internal motivation is the separator. People who have internal motivation, or a motivation structure that is balancing between internal and external motivation are the most productive and satisfied. Skew too far to one form of motivation or the other and the moment can become cumbersome. Yet there are times when each form of motivation serves a purpose. One form of motivation is better than the other, yet both are necessary at times. Listen to the podcast below to hear how and why you should choose to balance these two forms of motivation. How upon seeing the motivations for what they are you can use them appropriately and beneficially. 10 Rules of Karate for You Final Weapon Rory Miller – Clarity See how we can connect. Best Teaching for Boomerang Students

Best Teaching for Boomerang Students. Here are four keynotes to integrating a former student back into the flow of the dojo. And I give you a real-world example. The example demonstrates how to use them for best teaching for boomeranged students. Of course, it is about martial arts students, but you can use this method in other aspects of your life as well. Bad Television The Crazy Trope Doesn’t Work A trope that gets a good going over often in television sitcoms is the, “It’s just so crazy it might work.” The situation is dire, the moment of no hope has arrived in the storyline. A character, usually, The Fool, pitches a crazy idea. We all see the idea as crazy, except the leader. Of course, when implemented works. The second trope is, “Our only chance it is to reverse the polarity.” A favorite of the superhero genre (See Superman, Space Ghost, Batman) Just going the opposite way is not a real solution. It’s just an reaction and that rarely works in the real world. Space Ghost 4 Points for Boomerang Student Instruction The four-point recommendation contained here is not the crazy reverse method employed by sitcoms and comic book heroes. But it is close. In the podcast, you get a full breakdown of how I am doing it with my student Sofie. Sofie has returned to martial arts, karate after years away. Sofie is back on the floor and these are the four points to make her return not successful, but spectacular. Small Bites. Keep the information small and manageable. The students are facing changes and changes are challenges. Show Improvement and label it as such Set the student up for success. It’s not what you say it is what you do Talk about the future, not the past The four action items get broken down and analyzed in the context of a real-world student. These four points form the methods of best teaching for boomerang students. Listen and hear how the retuning student is experiencing success. She is enjoying her return to karate and of not frustration born of a sense of incompetence. Direction to Success Listen to the podcast listed below to get all four points fleshed out and explained. Black Belt Boomerang is Good

Black Belt Boomerang is Good. Going back to the school, back to the dojo is a fantastic act. But first we need to review The Black Belt Bolt. Reaching back to an older episode of Martial Arts and Life about the Black Belt Bolt. The black belt bolt is the act of getting a black belt and then never returning to the school.  There are reasons for this behavior, but I lay the act at the feet of the student most of the time. There are of course situations that run the other way, but it’s the student more often than not. Going Back to The Dojo I had a conversation on a social media platform with a guy that was returning to his training and how he was returning to the school after engaging in the Black Belt Bolt.  I touch on a few quick reasons the Black Belt Bolt manifests and 4 Key points on how to be successful in returning to the dojo, dojang, Kwon, whatever the name and platform are. When the Black Belt Boomerang comes around and lands at your feet you get to pick it up and answer some personal questions. Those questions need answers, and that makes you a seeker. The Crippling Effects of Too Much Karate

The Crippling Effects of Too Much Karate. A saying that I cannot give proper attribution to goes this way, “A wealth of information causes a poverty of wisdom.” Data, information, and wisdom. Data, we have no idea what it is it lacks context. Information has context, we may know where it came from or who handles it. Wisdom is a leap across the ocean in the difference of quality. Wisdom is about the contextualizing of the information. How it gets implementing by the interpreter. Bumper Sticker Wisdom The Crippling Effects of Too Much Karate The crippling effects of too much information gets a reducing to simplicity. That simplify is bumper sticker wisdom. Bumper Sticker wisdom is simplistic. Bumper sticker wisdom works and because it sticks in our brain. Because of the simplicity, Bumper Sticker phrases are passing for wisdom. An example is, “A Black Belt is a White Belt that never quit.” It’s a Dog The physiological word game of, I say cat, you say dog. The association of the words is not about being correct, but being easy. Today we have the classic analysis paralysis on full-tilt. We have that ability to go to a party and hear the words, “Well actually…” based on a new version of information and data. We Have Been Lied to Before Don’t forget the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave us the now-debunked Food Pyramid. A simple shape, easy to remember, a name that sticks, and the power of the government telling you this is what to do. And we did it. We taught it in schools we were reading about it in books, and seeing it on film and screen. The idea of researching has reached a level of inability of getting to a conclusion in some instances. Too much information, too much information on YouTube, and you have the crippling effects of too much karate. What are you supposed to be looking at? What are you to train? You Can Get Hoodwinked! And I also share a story in the attached podcast of how made a mistake. In writing in a book from some twenty years ago I repeated a story that made sense until it was exposed as a falsehood, and urban myth. Mad Men Would Be Proud More on Russians, the Apollo space missions, and the oily T-Zone, and Camel cigarettes. All in the attached podcast. Your Karate Will Never Die

Your Karate Will Never Die. It is the truth. Something’s die and some things don’t. The story of eternal life is a scary and yet comforting one depending on the source of the animation. The Dead and Dying and Karate The cable company is dying of a thousand cuts, and the Netflix of the world are the ones doing the stabbing. Is there a chart that explains the descent of a failed industry and the rise of another? The usurping of the cable company is all but over. Cable Companies The change in our behavior has demanded the way the industry has reshaped itself. The ease of transition is the largest determinate. The telephone operator is an example of an outsources industry. You are now the telephone operator. Let’s talk about the money order and waiting 6 to 8 weeks for delivery. If that long order process was in place in today’s market – that industry will be dead before it even gets started. The Platforms Change The platforms change in sports. The players may get a little stronger. the players get a little faster, leaping a little higher, but the platform can change. The platform change is easy to see. In football, the forward pass, an essential part of today’s game was once illegal. The National Basketball Association added a 3-point line. Shoot the ball from behind this line on the court and the basket is worth 3 points instead of the usual 2 points. Roger Bannister The Human Platform The human platform does not change. The sub 4 minute mile by Roger Bannister is an example of a modern human being. But there are some differences between brands. Neanderthals can be differentiated from Homo Sapiens. But if you were on a teeming city street and a well-groomed, appropriately dressed Neanderthal walked by you, would you know? Likely not. That is how close the platforms are. Run the same test with a Gorilla and they are picked out instantly. the human platform goes on and if well done Your karate will never die That is why your karate will never die. It is not based on anything other than the humanoid platform. Learn more about this idea and how you can better put in place the longevity of the martial arts. As well as better suit the needs of today’s martial artists and the ones in the future you will never know. Enjoy these thought provoking podcasts as well. 4 Changes to Better Your Karate Marc “Animal” MacYoung – The Recognition Karate and Your Designed Commitment See how we can connect. Why Do Some People Move You?

Why do some people move you? Opening up our skulls. I love comedians, Shelly Burman, Bill Cosby, and Norm MacDonald. The death of Norm MacDonald was a gut punch to me. As celebrities’ deaths can affect us, even if we don’t know them. Because what do we really know about a public person? Why Do Some People Move You? Norm MacDonald We know only what they present. Did we know that O.J. Simpson would become a murderer? Let alone kill two people. No, I just knew he was one of the greatest running backs of our time and had an offensive line called the Electric Company. Did we know America’s Dad, Bill Cosby? We don’t know these folks. You Think You Know, But You Don’t Know But you can know the people in your proximity – or gain a great level of insight with a simple set of questions that are not threatening. The technique of what is your favorite movie? And who are your favorite comedians? Old Time Movie Projector The joke was the important item for Norm MacDonald, be funny, get the joke. Sympathy for his Leukemia diagnosis. MacDonald was concerned his illness would detract. Norm’s illness would be coloring everything. How people would approach every joke got forward from his diagnosis. That is the commitment to the cause. I respect that commitment. The commitment to the craft and everything else is damned. Even Norm’s mortality. The Tools of Understanding This tool of movies and comedians is a great tool to use as an instructor. When you use this tool, you will gain insight into people. Warren Zevon Warren Zevon, his craft and death. That was a guy’s death that kicked me in the shins because I found him authentic. Zevon owned everything. He wrote about some of it and labored over his craft of song writing. This audit is a challenge for you to undertake. Who are your favorite comedians and what are your favorite movies? You are going to pull some things out of yourself. What is Behind the Curtain? See what may be behind the curtain. You are going to see some things and I am suggesting you take a hard position. That hard position is the one Norm MacDonald and Warren Zevon took, it’s all about the truth and art. Why do some people move you? This process may answer that question. I leave you with a quote from Norm MacDonald, “You don’t know what to think now do ya?” Here are a few podcast you will find interesting Strong Karate Teacher Lateral Move Marc “Animal” MacYoung See how we can connect. The Debt You Owe Your Karate Teacher

The Debt You Owe Your Karate Teacher. Let’s take a journey down a road to a new way to look at the idea of a debt owed by you to your martial arts instructor. Let’s Build Some Fences and Ditches “I don’t know how I could repay my martial arts instructor for what they have given me.” The transition to adult education is not an easy threshold to get over. It takes some effort on your part and you need to meet the teacher in the place they want you to come. The lesson of a Seventh Grade Teacher and how that time was a place I was incurring a debt. Was it her effort, or is it she was paid and was just doing her job? The bottom line is that is a case-by-case call, some teachers are just hammering the check, others are building our future. Expectations are the most basic of learning. These are all within the fences, and then there are the items located outside of the boundaries. We should have a clear understanding of these two roles. The Debt You Owe Your Karate Teacher and a New View The idea of trading works to the teacher, not for instruction, but to service the debt owed becomes a problem. Bartering is fine. Exploiting the debt owed is a line crossing that should not be occurring. When the instructor is misusing the student’s sense of debt and its owing, that is a line that is, well abused. The Assumption of Negotiation The anchoring of a number in the human mind is an anchor in the art of negotiation. You can see this in the television show Pawn Stars at its cleanest example. The client begins negotiating with a number. That number gets shot down from the other side of the counter. These are the reasons the item is only worth this much, and the list begins, as the pawn store is out to get the best price. The new number often becomes the new value. The negotiation is fast, clear, and crisp. The item may mean a lot to the client, to the shop it is one of many deals that day, and they all need to make money. Sentimentality has little currency and can be messy. It is Similar in the Minds of Student and Teachers The student has a rate and the teacher has a rate. Neither may be anchoring in reality. The anchoring may be taking place in sentiment. The difference is the idea of debt versus a favor. Favors have no debt or expectation attached. Debt has attachments. We should have a clear understanding of these two roles when we enter into a martial arts school and the relationship attached to the agreement.  A trick of observation and process to avoid unhealthy anchoring is given in the podcast. Take a listen and see how you can avoid a massive error in negotiation and the expectations. The debt you think you are owing your karate teacher, it must be measured correctly. Did you Leave Something Behind?

Did you leave something behind? The great masters of martial arts have left behind, martial arts techniques. The martial arts masters have also left a few pieces of wisdom. These martial arts masters get no listing in the pantheon of great thinkers. You don’t have Chojun Miyagi’s name mentioned with Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, or others. That does not happen. It’s about their niche, and that niche is self-defense without the use of a weapon. That is a narrow frame. I am unlikely to take fighting tips from Immanuel Kant. (But Descartes knew how to use a sword). A difference of arenas is important as they don’t always cross. Did you Leave Something Behind? And what are you choosing to leave behind? The legacy is the question, that is the question Matt Jardine asked me, “What do you want your legacy to look like?” That question strikes straight the ego and how do you control the ego? We all want to be remembered at the end of our run we want to be remembered and remembered well. A great book by Matt Jardine How to Leave a Mark on the World and Not a Scar Leaving a mark with a name is exemplified by Thomas Jefferson the 3rd President of the United States. Avoiding a scar and not leaving your name on the world is demonstrated by Vasili Arkhipov. Vasili Arkhipov One of these men left his name on a piece of history the other left a piece of history with the little name associated. Both left a different world. This story gets teased out in the podcast as you listen. If you haven’t heard the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Here is and how on Soviet Submariner saved the planet during the missile crisis. And this submariner also saved the world’s breadbasket. The bread basket Jefferson purchased. listen to the podcast attached and you’ll be getting the relational story. The relational story that binds leaving future generations a map to betterment together. The Third Generation is Your Rule The Third Generation answers the question of how to make your name go forward, how to make your ideas go forward. A non-scientific method of establishing a time-defined goal. The future is coming ready or not. The making something that will last for future generations. It also setting the ego aside is almost essential to a great achievement that lives on with a positive tip. It serves as the foundation for the positive. Your martial arts does not define your contribution, did you leave something behind? It need not be martial arts. But martial arts are a brimful furnace in which the three generations of gifts can get a forging. That is how martial arts contribute to the gift you can leave in any area of your choosing. It’s about leaving something for your karate students. Did you leave something behind? Here are a few other podcasts you will find interesting and helpful Karate Gifts You Do Traditional Karate?
