The Sydney Morning Herald’s Judith Whelan

Mediaweek visited the Fairfax office in Sydney to talk to The Sydney Morning Herald’s new editor Judith Whelan on the Friday before the title begun its 185th birthday celebrations. “The history of The Herald is essentially the history of Sydney,” Whelan told Mediaweek. She credited the birth of the paper for “the beginning of the exchange of ideas in a public forum.” The 185-year-long journey for Australia’s oldest metro newspaper has been one of constant change. As a part of this cycle, Fairfax announced 120 fulltime editorial job cuts in Sydney and Melbourne earlier this year. “Every single media organisation in the world is having to transform itself. That transformation inevitably means that new jobs will emerge and jobs, which have been around for a long time, might disappear,” Whelan commented. “What we are going through now is a part of that transformation. “We have to keep changing. We have to keep adapting what our audience wants from us.” Also discussed on the podcast: How The Sydney Morning Herald’s journey is the journey of the city How the audience would react to the front page of The Sydney Morning Herald printed in the style of 1831. The quality v quantity debate: Does the number of journalist working for a newspaper impact the quality of a newspaper and the number of articles produced? How does an editor work with the editor-in-chief Darren Goodsir? Before becoming the editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, Whelan was the news director of the title. She talks about how her experience has helped with the new role. Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen

Alfie Allen is disarmingly charming. Sitting down with one of the stars of what is arguably the most talked about TV show on the planet is always going to be a thrill, but Allen takes it all in his stride and puts everyone he talks to at ease. It is very quickly apparent that Allen appreciates the opportunities that the show has provided him and is thrilled to be on a show as significant as Game of Thrones. Allen’s character, Theon Grayjoy, has been through a lot on the show. Initially starting the series with a swagger, the character has figuratively been through hell and back as he was psychologically and physically emasculated by a cruel torturer over the run of the show. Now, however, Grayjoy is set to take a more significant role in the show, pushing Allen further into the limelight. Throughout this chat with Mediaweek deputy editor Dan Barrett, Allen offers some insight into working with such a decentralised cast, improvements to the craft services table thanks to new cast member Ian McShane, and he remarks on the insensitivity of actor Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Stark) to certain plot twists Theon Greyjoy has gone through. Presto’s Shaun James – declares service is #2 in Australian SVOD market

Presto chief Shaun James declared that Presto is the number two subscription video on demand service in Australia during his interview on the Mediaweek Industry podcast. James was joined by Presto head of content and acquisitions Brendan Moo as he outlined what he views as the market realities for Presto. “If you look at a number of data points: We look at brand tracking. We’re number 2. We look at traffic and usage, which are publicly available web figures over the December, January, February period. We’re number 2. We know from some of our affiliate partners where all services are available on things like the Telstra TV or other devices of that nature that we sit at number 2 from a usage and utility point of view. “There’s a lot of chatter in the space and a lot of the commentary about where we sit in market comes from one of the other SVOD providers, rather than an independent arbiter, so you’d probably expect that,” James explained. In considering the metrics, James insisted that Presto is a very firm second. Behind Netflix, but ahead of the Fairfax/Nine co-venture Stan. “They’re metrics that we look at side by side. So, if you look at one of the metrics that’s been spoken about is gross registrations. Fairfax half-year results talked about 700,000 gross registrations [for Stan]. As we sit here this morning, we’re comfortably north of that from a Presto perspective. We don’t necessarily see it as an incredibly meaningful statistic because these services are about, at the end of the day, active paying subscribers,” he said. Also discussed on the podcast: Could Presto streamline its packages from separate Movies/TV services into a single priced product? As Foxtel evolve their online offering, could it cause confusion for Foxtel or Presto subscribers? Why All Saints has proven surprisingly popular? Could Presto ever one day commission its own House of Cards? How well did Home & Away: An Eye For an Eye do in retaining subscribers? The threat of piracy and the technical limitations of being able to deliver content on the same day as US broadcast. And more.
