Rest Cast: The New Evoloiton

Evolution. I like evolution, it’s a way that things naturally become the best version of themselves. Darwin was big on evolution, finches with different shaped beaks to allow them to eat what was available.  Us humans have evolved loads from the things that crawled from the primordial ooze, billions of years ago. One of the things that we’ve evolved is the big beautiful brains that allow us to make cool stuff like pop tarts, art and lego. Also, because of our awesome neocortex (the big squidgy bit of the brain at the front) we are able to process and imagine problems. This allows us to imagine and then evolve the environment we are in to suit our needs right now. This is why we have smartphones, uber eats and aircon. Through our ability to dream, to imagine, we create our environment. Star trek in the ‘60s imagined mobile phones and tablet computers, look what we’ve got now! This is what I’ve been doing, I’ve looked at what I’m good at, and what people want from me and, despite my stubbornness, I’m moving that way. I’ve looked at the stats from things that I put out in the world, (metrics are awesome, boring, but awesome) and I’ve seen what people value that I make. I’m shifting to what I’m good at, to what provides the most value, the most benefit and the most resources for those whom I serve. That is, Rest, Resourcing and Relaxation. I’ve changed how my podcast presents, I’ve moved providers (soundcloud kept messing up) and here I am now. The Rest Cast is all about guided imagery, radical rest yoga nidra, and other ways to help you rest and resource.   That is how I am evolving, how are you evolving?    Big love   Rich xxx   I offer 1-2-1 sessions to help you rest and resource from and for the challenges that life throws at you.   Team Rest is where you get Radical Rest Yoga Nidra every month, delivered to your inbox.   The Medicine for Modern Times Rest Cast is where I share my guided imagery, radical rest yoga nidra, and other ways to help you rest and resource.   This is the podcast:

When I did not crash my car.

WHAT’S A TRAUMA RESPONSE? When we experience stressful situations, we can get overwhelmed, and if that overwhelm is not managed/fully experienced we can develop a trauma response.  So this is a story, all about how, my life did NOT get switched, turned up side down…mainly, because I was in my body. I was driving to pick up my wife from a course, I was doing the speed limit, and the car in front shed its load, a lump of plywood.  I was doing 70, and a sheet of wood was coming towards me. I managed to evade the obstacle, I freaked, no harm, carried on with my journey.  The interesting part for geek me, was what went on during the hand-full of seconds while my foot was on the break, and my hands were changing the direction of the car - my freak moment. My heart rate went up, my breathing got fast and shallow, my hands hand and feet went numb, my face went pale, as did my extremities, my mouth went dry. All of these were physiological responses, signs that my body was getting ready to activate fight or flight. Both of which are hard to do when driving a Golf.  This was my body getting ready to save my life. To make sure I survived what ‘could’ and ‘might’ be coming. What was interesting to me, as someone that studies trauma and works with those who experience it, is that after this happened, my body normalised quickly. Back to deep tummy breaths, my heart rate came down, I pinked up and was all good to continue with my travels. What I did notice, was that my left foot was shaking, which is a super-normal response in this situation. You see, when we experience stress, trauma, or overwhelm, our body releases lots of energy, hormones and neurotransmitters that get us ready to run, or fight. Thats what my body did in the car, but what my body produced, wasn’t needed because I was able to avoid the threat safely. That trauma energy was able to work through my body by shaking. A super natural response, that is well documented as a way to release trauma so that it doesn’t stay stuck and unresolved in your body.   Here are some examples of shaking, so like me, you can geek out.  This is Savannah after her first hunt. (Just the first bit, then there is a dead deer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSFnmM12LOQ This is a polar bear being tagged.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHVNUDPMeSY We most times get in the way of our own fully-realised experience of being a human animal as we are scared of being judged or shamed or embarrassed. TRE is the tool I use to release the body’s stress, tension and trauma so I don’t get overwhelmed. It’s like a coke bottle. Everyday the coke bottle gets shaken a little more, and when you shake the lid off? Mess.  If we let all the trauma out at once, we end up with an over-spill of sticky emotions and not-felt-before feelings. Not fun and it potentially takes a long time, even years to clean up. Have you ever burst a bean bag? THAT. What we can do instead is to let the pressure out, a little bit at a time, the same way we do when twisting the fizzy  coke bottle lid, pisst. That way the pressure, the trauma is released slowly, on your terms, and with much less emotional mess.  TRE is my favourite tool for this, yes there are other tools, I have a BIG medicine bag full of them, but right now, I’m finding it to be a very supportive process in helping to work with heightened stress levels, trauma (of all different variations) or tension held within the body that’s causing pain and discomfort. I share this both in person and online, so if you’d like to book a session, click HERE and I look forward to working with you.
