26 – Leaving the Sea
Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 27, 2287 – As Ada and I approached the edge of the Glowing Sea, back to what I’d say was the proper Commonwealth, the sun had started to emerge over a hill toward the eastern horizon. An irradiated pond in the valley before me increasingly mirrored the oranges of morning, and I felt a building but unexpected sensation of contentment wash over me – a kind of peace I hadn’t felt in a long, long time. I was reminded of a morning when I was a child. In fact, maybe I had visited this place before, because something about the row of trees way beyond and the way they meandered about the other side of the pond struck me. My mom and dad were there, the weather was sharp, with a cool breeze winding past us, the smell of lilacs in the air. It’s funny how the smell of a flower you haven’t smelled in a couple decades – well, longer if you think about it – how it can come back to you and you know instantly what it is. I remember being on a large wool blanket spread out on the lawn, and I was playing with […]

Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 13, 2287 – Goodneighbor had the illusion of being a tucked away protected area in the middle of the city. It was walled off on all sides, only accessible by the main entrance off what was now an alleyway eventually leading to the Common. But even as I tried to sleep, there were constant sounds of Vertiberds overhead, firefights in the distance, and explosions. Hancock might have controlled what was going on inside the borders of this town, but outside, there was a still a war, apparently now between the Brotherhood and the various rogue forces that were competing for resources and political control. Even the Minutemen, stuck in the northwest corner of the Commonwealth, were involved in that battle, as Preston and his crew tried to eke out their version of freedom for the expanding array of settlements that allied themselves with the faction. At first, it seemed to be good guys vs. the bad guys. But it was getting increasingly difficult to tell who was who anymore. I had a feeling if I got to someone representing the Institute at some point, they’d probably think they had a good reason for doing what they were doing as […]

Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 13, 2287 – As Nick and I headed to the lower level of the Memory Den, where Dr. Amari set people up in egg-shaped pods where they could live out parts of other people’s lives, I asked him a question I had been wondering about for quite a while, especially in light of my conversation with Hancock. With so many in the Commonwealth openly hostile toward the Institute, and synths in general, how was it that he was on such good terms with so many people? He said it hadn’t always been this way. He had never hidden who he was, and in a time when the real terror of synths came from them inhabiting friends and family, he had always just been Nick. That transparency – which was mostly forced by his facial appearance – had been vital in getting people to trust him. That led me to another obvious question – if the Institute had patterned human-looking synths on real people, was there a real Nick somewhere? And if so, what happened to him? Turns out, the “real” Nick Valentine was a cop, and if I had spent more time in the city back in my day, […]

20 – Finding Goodneighbor
Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 12, 2287 – Whenever I spend some time in what passes for civilization these days, I start getting complacent. The northwest suburbs of the Commonwealth are now largely controlled by the Minutemen and the Brotherhood. Diamond City and its surroundings are pretty much under control of the Diamond City guards, or at least there’s an illusion of control outside the gates, finally. But I keep forgetting how necessary it is to stay on high alert once outside those pockets of stability. Right now, I have no idea where Nick is, since he and I got separated on the way to the Memory Den. I’m not exactly sure how it happened. It was getting dark, and we had just crossed the Common seemingly headed toward the Scollay Square area. As we entered one of the side streets, we started to hear Super Mutant voices. Immediately, we turned around and started backtracking, and as we got back to Park Street Station, I noticed there was a metro bus just in front of the Old Granary Burying Grounds. I motioned to Nick to follow me, as I figured it would be a good spot to discuss some way around the mutants so we didn’t have to engage them. […]

MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 12, 2287 – Has someone ever told you something about their past that completely changed how you perceived them? Reason I ask is because I just had a very interesting chat with someone back at Diamond City, and something she told me revealed a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why she’s so aggressively trying to get the word out about a danger she sees threatening the entire Commonwealth. OK, you know who I’m talking about, but I’ll get to that story in just a moment. After helping Danse find the deep range transmitter at the ArcJet site, I had a thought that I might go back to the Red Rocket and pick up a set of power armor to take with me to Diamond City, since that had been my reason for going back home in the first place. But I was so close to the Back Bay, I decided to just go ahead and see if I could have that chat with Piper about locating the Institute. I wasn’t sure what kind of scene I’d make showing up there in a T-51 suit anyway. If the Brotherhood had already shown up, that would be one thing. But I […]

Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 10, 2287 – Aside from my lengthy nap in the crashed military tank I had stumbled upon in the wasteland just north of Fort Hagan, I had pretty much been going full tilt since Nick and I had started tracking down Kellogg. That kind of schedule was probably fine for Nick, being a synth and all, but when I had first arrived at the Red Rocket, I don’t even think I had realized how exhausted I was. The power armor I had discovered in a Fort Hagen barn had helped make it a little easier to get home, despite being wounded from the shrapnel in the proximity mine explosion near the tank, but now that I had a chance to sort of catch my breath, it was clear that I didn’t have the kind of energy I was going to need in order to break into the Institute. That is if I could even find it. I was surprised to find that Preston and the Minutemen had, for the most part, abandoned Sanctuary Hills in favor of the Red Rocket settlement. Were it not for the giant rocket on top of the structure, I don’t think I would have […]

17 – The Brotherhood – Part 1
Episode in
MindFog: A Fallout 4 Diary
November 8, 2287 – After rejoining with Dogmeat, and having just seen the Brotherhood of Steel’s mammoth airship sailing out over the Commonwealth, I was wondering if I should reconsider my plan to head north to Sanctuary Hills and resupply, or if I should just make my way back to Diamond City now. I had no idea what the Brotherhood was planning. The announcement over the ship’s loudspeaker that had rained down on all of Fort Hagen had merely said “do not interfere,” and that the Brotherhood’s intentions were peaceful. I supposed that was yet to be determined. Maybe Preston had been right about the Brotherhood when he had mentioned he expected them to make a power grab at some point. I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn’t my job to save the Commonwealth, and that this really was none of my business. There wasn’t much one man could do about whatever was going on anyway. The best thing I could do is take care of myself, and continue my mission to find Shaun. Before heading out of town, I decided to do a quick scout around the Fort Hagan area, and I was glad I did. It turned out many […]
