10@9 Feel the Matzah - April 8, 2025
This morning we reflect on the logistical hoops we will go through this Shabbat which is the eve of Passover, and explore why we are not allowed to simply eat Matzah this Shabbat. R. Aharon Lichtenstein explains how this is an essential part of our service to God in all areas, which mirrors God's treatment of us. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. 10@9 Beauty and the Beast - April 7, 2025
This morning we discuss the details of this coming weekend as Erev Pesach (the eve of Passover) falls this Shabbat. There are differences of opinion on many of these issues. Here I present my opinion and suggestion of how best to observe these details. I have also written a short essay outlining these details which you can find here: https://www.adath.ca/pdf_doc/ErevPesachShabbat5785.pdf Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. 10@9 The Legacy of Major Eyal Shuminov - April 6, 2025
10@9 The Legacy of Major Eyal Shuminov - April 6, 2025
This morning I share the message of our guest speaker at ADATH yesterday, Tovia Roness, a remarkable young man who served as a medic in the Givati Brigade in Gaza. He paid tribute to his commander, Major Eyal Shuminov, who fell in battle last April, 2024. The lessons he shared are relevant to every one of us, though they were dramatically relevant to Tovia and his fellow soldiers. We are reminded, again, of the outstanding moral principles of the IDF, and the greatness of its leaders like Major Shuminov. 10@9 Korbanot Teach Us About Human Nature and Salt - April 4, 2025
10@9 Korbanot Teach Us About Human Nature and Salt - April 4, 2025
This morning we analyze two lessons we learn from Korbanot (the sacrifices detailed in this week's Torah portion, VaYikra). One lesson concerns human nature and the other relates to salt. Then we finish the week and provide inspiration for Shabbat with a wonderful story about a unique wedding in Israel this week. Shir HaShirim, Part 3 - April 3, 2025
Shir HaShirim, Part 3 - April 3, 2025
This evening we conclude a three-part series (each part will stand alone) on Shir HaShirim (the Song of Songs) written by King Solomon. We analyze the passage which describes the low point in the relationship between lover and beloved. We trace how this passage becomes the basis for Kol Dodi Dofek (The Sound of My Beloved Knocks), one of the most important essays of Religious Zionism by the Rav, Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik. And we describe the saddest letter the Rav ever wrote. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. 10@9 Two Substitutes for Sacrifices - April 2, 2025
10@9 Two Substitutes for Sacrifices - April 2, 2025
This morning we discuss how we serve God when there are no more sacrifices (since our Torah portion, VaYikra, indicates this is a primary way of serving God). We provide two substitutes, prayer, from Maharal, and Torah study from the Rav, Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik, and explain how each reach precisely the same goal as sacrifices (which itself is a poor translation for Korbanot). Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. 10@9 Burial: Healing is Rooted in Kindness - April 1, 2025
10@9 Burial: Healing is Rooted in Kindness - April 1, 2025
This morning we discuss the return of bodies from Gaza, people who were murdered on or after October 7, 2023, and whose bodies Hamas has kept as part of their barbaric cruelty. We urge and pray for the return of all hostages, both living and deceased. As bodies are returned to Israel and we engage in the Mitzvah of burial, we explore a new pain, and a new comfort, and we must focus on both. We quote from Rabbi Aryeh Levin, Rabbi Dan Moskovitz, Rachel Sharansky Danziger, and Nova Festival survivor Daniel Sharabi. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. 10@9 We Are Happy at Leaders' Mistakes - March 31, 2025
This morning we discuss the strange verse that seems to assert that our leaders (king, president, prime minister, teacher, rabbi - all types of leaders) will inevitably make mistakes. From Seforno and Rashi (expressed by a great story about Rabbi Yaakov Kanievsky) we derive two distinct lessons, which are so very applicable to our lives today. 10@9 Our Children Are Teaching Us - March 28, 2025
This morning we explore an amazing phenomenon in Israel, the way in which our young people have exhibited incredible strength, faith, courage, idealism, and leadership, especially since October 7, 2023. We see this in the thousands of bumper stickers all over Israel, encapsulating the messages these young people stand for, collected by Rabbi Chaim Navon in a recent edition of Makor Rishon. I'm grateful to my colleague Rabbi David Fine, for directing me to this article. Shir HaShirim Part 2 - March 27, 2025
This evening we continue a three-part series (each part will stand alone) on Shir HaShirim (the Song of Songs) written by King Solomon. We discuss the significance of the flowers and birds mentioned in it, as well as the repetitions and near repetitions, all of which contain multiple layers of meaning. Tonight's theme is that Shir HaShirim, on one level, is a lovesong to the Land of Israel, causing us to fall in love and stay in love with the Land of Israel. I share my personal story of encountering and exploring the depths of Shir HaShirim in Israel. 10@9 Minor is Also Major - March 23, 2025
This morning we discuss an apparent discrepancy in Moshe's audit of the Mishkan materials and the magnificent insight of Rabbi Yosef Soloveitchik. We then connect this to a shortcoming of the Nesiim (Princes of each tribe), and a lesson from Matzah that even minor details are major when they affect another person or form the overall structure of serving God. Mining the Riches of the Parsha on Shir HaShirim, Part 1 - March 20, 2025
This evening we begin a three-part series (each part will stand alone) on Shir HaShirim (the Song of Songs) written by King Solomon. Tonight we introduce the four layers of interpretation that are woven together, plus the abrupt changes in tense and speaker even in the middle of a verse, which give this work such complex beauty and meaning. 10@9 the surprising expert on antisemitism - march 19, 2025
This morning I share part of an interview of Daniel Gordis with Rabbi Raphael Shore. You will never guess who best understood the reason for antisemitism. Rabbi Shore explains that plus what we should do with that knowledge. 10@9 No Spares - March 17, 2025
This morning we analyze the detailed inventory of each item in the MIshkan (sanctuary) and ask why there were no spare parts, no extras for replacements? The answer, suggested by Rabbi Yissocher Frand and reinforced by Rabbi Yisroel Salanter, forms a basic outlook on how we are to serve God.
