#50: Chilling with Bobi Wine

On the podcast this week we have an interview with Bobi wine, who in my opinion, alongside Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone, is one of the biggest names in Ugandan music. Bobi has been on the scene for awhile now, making his debut in the early 2000s and he has also been instrumental in shaping a certain section of Ugandan music with his Firebase and ghetto republic of Uganda crews. His self-styled title as the Ghetto president of Uganda should tell you a lot about the kind of music Bobi makes and the audience he speaks to and for. He is very much a grass roots musician who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps, so when he gets to make trips to Jamaica and do collaborations with the likes of Mr G as he did recently, it is a big deal. THere are two songs Bobi was introducing on $SNMS when he visited, ‘Clean and out’ and ‘Girls’, both of which feature Mr G. Enjoy the podcast! And don’t forget to subscribe in iTunes! #49: Ruyonga “Victory music” album listen

On the podcast this week we have an extended interview with Ruyonga on the occasion of his (debut) album release and concert. Ruyonga has made a name for himself is a relatively short amount of time and when we sat down for this interview he was in the final phases of putting togetherhis Victory Music album and planning his first concert, which went by the same name. Despite his exhaustion, Ruuuuu (as his friends call him) powered through the interview and allowed us to preview his entire album.  This is one of m favorite things that we do into he show because we get an insight into the music making process and it allows fans to get closer to their favorite artists. Ruyonga’s album is out now and available on myziki.com so if you like what you hear, support him and buy the album. Enjoy the podcast! And don’t forget to subscribe in iTunes! Aethan has a bunch of credentials under his belt including production for the likes of Navio, Klear Kut, Ruyonga, Lyrikal Proof, theMith, AirporTaxi and many more. He is currently working on his first album and he came by SNMS to release the first single which is simply called Spit and which features Cyno MC, St Nelly Sade and Flex D’Paper. Enjoy the podcast! #46: An interview with Liquideep

On the show today we have an interview with Ryzor and Ziyon, a house music duo from South Africa better known as Liquideep.  The band has sold millions of records since their formation in 2007 and their unique brand of soulful house has won them widespread acclaim from fans the world over. They recently released their latest studio album Welcome Abroad and being a huge fan of theirs, it was a real honour for me to sit wwith them and talk music. After all, that’s the main reason I got into this whole radio malarky. Enjoy the podcast! And don’t forget to subscribe in iTunes! #45: Patrobas drops “Lose your mind”

On the show today we have an interview with one of Kinetic Management’s newest signees Patrobas. Patrobas  is one of those rappers who everyone in Uganda has heard of but not everyone in Uganda knows very well.  In my opinion his biggest issue, and this is true for both him and his Dustville crew has been exposure and hopefully that will change now that he is signed with Kinetic.  Patrobas had a new single he wanted to share with us called “Lose Your Mind” and we also discussed the Kinetic deal and a bunch of other stuff. #44: Angela Katatumba’s amazing story

On the podcast this week we have the incredible story behind Angella Katatumba’s new single Supernatural Girl. I love that we are not restricted for time on SNMS because it allows us to have these kind of extended conversations with artists. Angella wrote Supernatural Girl after going through a long and harrowing ordeal with her now ex-husband, and with her dad being who he is and with Ugandan society being the way it is, it would have been easier and more convenient for Angella to keep the story quiet. I for one am glad she didn’t. Enjoy the podcast! And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes! This podcast is produced, edited and distributed by:

#42: GNL Zamba – Filmu ya maziga & Caezar

On the show this week I have an interview we conducted with The Legendary GNL Zamba when he released two new tracks on SNMS. The first is a ballad of sorts (if hip-hop songs can be ballads) called Filmu ya maziga or We Cry and it features Tamar Michel. The second is a more hard-hitting, more traditionally hip-hop track called Caezar (sic). I can tell you right now that GNL’s manager loves one of these tracks, while it took some convincing for it to be released. All shall be revealed on the podcast! #41: Airportaxi 808 & Heartbreaks

Airportaxi are a young hip-hop/R&B group that was created from a talent contest held by Talent Africa. Martha, Llyboc and Tucker HD are in many ways still finding their musical identity but some of the songs they have released so far have been quite impressive. They are of course backed by Talent Africa so the production is always on point and their song-writing skills are improving with every release. Their latest track is called “808 and Heartbreaks” and the group stopped by SNMS during their radio tour for the track. Follow Airportaxi on Twitter (@airportaxi) and on facebook. #40: Gera & JerryRay take charge

Every (not) so often I take a Saturday off and hand over the show to my beleaguered producer. I call him beleaguered because we always think of some crazy way of making his life difficult. This time, rather than just getting a replacement from one of the presenters on the station, we held a competition over Twitter and Facebook to find two guest presenters from amongst the show’s fans. After a not-so-extensive vetting process, Namagera and JerryRay were the cream that floated to the top and they took over SNMS for a weekend. We booked Young Mulo, ekky and Unique as guests and Unique brought Cindy along to debut his latest single.    Namagera and JerryRay were assisted by DJ Joe on the show. Enjoy! #39: An interview with Proverb

On this week’s episode I have an interview we conducted for SNMS with SA rapper Proverb. Proverb has been doing his thing for quite a while now and has earned the respect of not just his peers in South Africa, but with rappers and hip-hop lovers all over the continent. He has a significant following here in Uganda and it was a real pleasure to talk to him. His insight and knowledge of the music industry is quite something. Enjoy! #38: Richy ‘My Words’ album listen

On this week’s episode I have an interview we conducted on #SNMS with Richy on the occasion of the release of his debut album ‘My Words’.  Debut albums are always big deal of course, but this one was especially special, because Richy went through a lot before fnally settling with his current management team and actually getting on with the business of making music. Richy was kind enough to let us listen to his entire album all the way through and I’m going to play you the discussion we had during the listen as well as snippets of selected songs.  You’ll also hear me mentioning a brand new site called http://www.myziki.com developed here in uganda where you can buy local music.  If you like what you hear, support richy by buying his album on MyZiki. #37: Myko Ouma & JSomething of Mi Casa

So… hello! Long time, as they say in our part of the world. The podcast has been off-air for a while and I have no excuses other than life just got in the way. This is a one-man operation and although it was always my intention to take a break every 12 episodes, this last break took a lil bit longer than I had planned. I can’t promise that there won’t be another lapse in episodes, but I can promise that they won’t be as long as this one and I will announce them beforehand. I’d like to thank everyone that has sent me messages of encouragement through email, on Twitter and Facebook and in person. I really appreciate the support and I’m glad this podcast has found a little audience out there. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, on to the business at hand. This week’s podcast is broken up into two sections. The first is an interview with guitarist extraordinaire Myko Ouma, which was recorded waaay back in March when Myko dropped by the show to release his then new song Club Banger. The second features  an interview with JSomething of the incredible South African house band Mi Casa. Now if you are unfamiliar with Mi Casa and if you like your house music- actually if you like music, period-  you are in for a real treat. Enjoy! #36: Game night with BFE

I was recently told by a radio consultant that my radio show, SNMS, breaks almost every rule of conventional radio. Some of his criticisms were general- that we don’t have a clear structure, that the week-to-week format is all over the place, etc. But most of his criticisms (paranoia-alert!) seemed to be directed at me- that I talk too much, that I talk in the middle of songs, that I can be a little shout-y (I concede that one), that I’m sometimes rude to callers (but it’s SO funny!), that my enunciation needed work etc etc. By the time he was done with me, I felt about 1 foot tall. When I thought about it a little later, I realised that although his points were valid, he was describing the sort of boring, cookie-cutter radio show that I absolutely hate and that we did not want SNMS to become. Every production meeting we have for the show starts with the same question: how can we make our next show better than our last, and that philosophy has served us quite well for the 2 years we’ve been on air. It’s what makes us try things like the BFE game night that you are about to hear. If you are a radio consultant, you should switch this off now because what you are about to hear may hurt your sensibilites. For the rest of you, enjoy the craziness! #35: Navio introduces the Kata remix ft Benny D

I have a very simple recording for you this week and it’s from when Navio came by the show to drop the remix to his Kata track. The remix features Benny D (Akon’s official DJ) and it maintains the high energy, high tempo feel of the original. Before Navio and I got down to the buiness at hand I had to play him my own (very unofficial) Kata remix. Enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes! #34: “Why most of Ugandan pop music is junk” – Joseph Batte

An interesting article appeared in the New Vieion recently entitled “Why most of Uganda’s pop music is junk.” The article, written by Mr Josph Batte, claimed that Uganda’s pop music scene lacks creativity and innovation, and is full of one-hit-seekers, who sacrifice musicality for the sake of a quick buck. Mr Batte was not afraid to call out particular artists in his article and although I disagreed with the general argument he made, I did agree with some of his particular points. Although I am, on the whole, optimistic about the direction of Ugandan pop music in general and of the urban genres in particular, Mr Batte made some very persuasive points in his article and I invited him on to SNMS to discuss them. #33: DJ Global “Toluleta”

This week’s podcast features an interview we conducted on SNMS with DJ Global, who stopped by the show to discuss his latest single “Toluleta”. The song is a bouncy dance number that features Salvado, a local comedian and radio-presenter.  Salvado has been known to perform the occasional musical number during his act, but he doesn’t usually record full songs.  I asked DJ Global amongst other things, how he made the collaboration happen and why he wanted Salvado in particular for this track. While he was with us, DJ global also also broke down the instrumental for the track and walked us through the decisions he made in studio. As usual, this is talk-heavy, but it’s the way we like it on SNMS. Enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes! This podcast is produced, edited and distributed by:

#32: Featuring JT & Ruyonga

I have two interviews for you this week- the first is with JT and the second is with Ruyonga. It feels natural that these two should be on the same podcast because not only are they are long term music collaborators, they are also very good friends. JT is a producer/rapper rapper who runs Yego Productions a local imprint that among other things is responsible for a most of Ruyonga’s output over the past couple of years, including his latest single “Tutuuse” for which there is a video being released soon. Ruyonga is a local rapper for whom faith and art are inseparable and who I believe is poised to make a serious impact on the continental stage. JT came my SNMS to talk about his projects for 2013 and to play us his new song which is about his recent decision to give up alcohol. Ruyonga was in with a new track that (produced by JT) called “Yeah we back”, and we ended up talking about all kinds of non-music stuff. Enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes! #31: A conversation with Keko

This week’s episode features a conversation I had with Keko on SNMS near the beginning of this year.  Keko is currently riding high after being signed to Sony Music Africa last year and we are all eagerly awaiting her debut project with them, which I am sure will take the whole continent by storm. Her debut major label single “Let me go” was released to much fanfare in December and there’s no doubt that she is one of the main flag-bearers and trend-setters of Ugandan urban music. Now, given her recent successes and being the classy interviewer that I am, it did not take long for me to hit Keko for some money. Enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes!
