The pace of technological change is staggering and can sometimes make us feel like we're trapped in the distant realm of the science fiction. Moral I.T breaks down the ethics of technologies, new and old, into appetising chunks.

Whether you're on the bus to work, cooking up a storm, or just want to understand the ethical implications of that new bit of tech you've allowed into your home, Victoria Matthews talks to the very people researching the moral hot waters that technology often lands in. Through conversations with academics, key business players and policy reformers, Moral I.T is all about ensuring that, in the formative decades to come, ethics is brought into the equation and well and truly stays there.

Deepfakes and doubting our intuitions

Episode in Moral I.T.
It's easy to say that Deepfake porn is wrong, but how  can we justify this moral evaluation if we intuitively feel that 'harmless' sexual fantasies are perfectly acceptable? Dr Öhman talks about solving "The Pervert’s Dilemma" and explores the ethical significance of  Deepfakes, which are overwhelmingly harming women.

Death Online

Episode in Moral I.T.
Chatbots that let you speak to dead relatives long after they're gone, digital graveyards on Facebook, Virtual Reality 'ghosts' and apps promising an eternal afterlife for your data. No, this isn't an episode of Black Mirror, but each of these are being made possible by the Digital Afterlife Industry. Moral I.T welcomes Dr Carl Öhman <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/carl-ohman/>; from the Oxford Internet Institute <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/>; to talk about the ethical problems in this industry with digital remains and posthumous consent. His answer? We should look to museums to keep our digital corpses safe from commercial exploitation.

Deepfakes and Doubting our Intuitions

Episode in Moral I.T.
Should our attitudes towards Deepfake pornography make us doubt our intuitions? It’s easy to say that Deepfake pornography is wrong, but how can we justify this moral evaluation if we intuitively feel that sexual fantasies are harmless and perfectly acceptable?   Moral I.T welcomes back Dr. Carl Öhman, from the Oxford Internet Institute. He talks about solving “The Pervert’s Dilemma” and explores the ethical significance of Deepfake pornography, a phenomenon overwhelmingly harming woman. Topics/highlights of the show include:  TensorFlow: an algorithm that was shared with good intentions, but used to harm others. Technical skills not needed: How to create and access Deepfake porn videos Typical targets: the majority of non-consensual pornagraphic attacks are on women. The Pervert’s Dilemma: How different, morally speaking, are sexual fantasies from Deepfake porn videos? Right or wrong? Doubting our gut feelings, but pinning down the logic behind our moral intuitions. The Levels of Abstraction method: Ethically speaking, no action occurs in isolation. Considering the macro-context: Deepfake porn facilitates disproportionate, systematic harm to women, unlike sexual fantasies. Shareability and materialization: how our hands can share information just as easily as computers.
