Music – The Real Economy

This has been one of those hectic years – lots of working, lots of travelling. Which has meant not much time to put mixes together, hence why a whole 12 months have gone by since the last one. Nonetheless that’s given me even more time to think about what to put in here – and I think there’s some really cracking stuff in here. Possibly one of the strongest playlists yet (if I may be so bold). As with all my mixes, this is all music I’ve been listening to over the past year – much of it (though by no means all) released in 2014. At the risk of being a bit snobbish I’ve whittled away some of the tunes which, while great, have been all over the radio (sorry Ten Walls, sorry Caribou) so hopefully there’ll be one or two surprises in there for you. This was mixed in one go on Christmas Eve. It’s a tiny bit messy in places, for which apologies. I’d never get round to redoing it if I didn’t post it up straight away. Enjoy! You have to hand it to the poor old euro. Always somehow capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. There could hardly have been a more unpropitious time for the single currency, or indeed the broader European project. It is with that in mind, along with the European mindset of fraternite, that this latest mix was put together. (Almost) every track on this mix has some kind of relevance to Europe and the European Union, and the one or two that don’t… well they’re just so good they couldn’t be left out. So here it is: your new European anthem. It starts slow, emerging out of the gloom and misery, much like, well the EU; after more than an hour of bounciness (with the occasional interlude of contemplation) it ends back in the gloom again.
