December 9th 2009, Woodbridge VA

With all the school shootings happening around the U.S the last 10 years, I decided it was time to reflect on a time I was in a school shooting. I was living in Woodbridge, VA on December 9th 2009 and was attending NVCC as a freshman. This day is the day I started to listen to my sixth sense, which is my intuition, my gut. This day changed my life.  https://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/us/10shooting.html

This is MY Mental Health Story

In today's episode I talk about the battle I have with my mental health, what I suffer from and where I am at today with it. This is what I live with: SAD - A mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year. Seasonal affective disorder occurs in climates where there is less sunlight at certain times of the year. Symptoms include fatigue, depression, hopelessness, and social withdrawal. Treatment includes light therapy (phototherapy), talk therapy, and medications. PTSD - A disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. The condition may last months or years, with triggers that can bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions. Symptoms may include nightmares or unwanted memories of the trauma, avoidance of situations that bring back memories of the trauma, heightened reactions, anxiety, or depressed mood. Treatment includes different types of trauma-focused psychotherapy as well as medications to manage symptoms. Anxiety/Panic Attacks - Sudden episode of intense fear or anxiety and physical symptoms, based on a perceived threat rather than imminent danger. Insomnia - Persistent problems falling and staying asleep. Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleep habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or certain medications. Symptoms may include difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested. Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behavior therapy, and identifying and treating underlying causes. Sleeping pills may also be used, but should be monitored for side effects. Hypervigilance - Is a heightened state of arousal, stress or sensitivity to certain sensory stimuli. It can cause intense emotional reactions, anxiety and impulsive patterns of behaviour. It makes us feel alert to hidden dangers - a primal sense of threat, a feeling of treading around on eggshells without knowing why. Abandonment - Emotional abandonment is a subjective emotional state in which people feel undesired, left behind, insecure, or discarded. People experiencing emotional abandonment may feel at a loss.

Shprintzen and colleagues first described the syndrome in 1978.Dec 15, 2020 and Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of the U.S. population. When schizophrenia is active, symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking and lack of motivation.
