Carib Culture and Stories

In service to listener Stephan Gíl, I sought out a story from Carib aboriginal culture this week and... I almost completely failed. Luckily I found a JSTOR copy of a 1955 edition of Caribbean Quarterly which, also luckily, contained a nine page write up on Carib cultural stories by E.P. Banks. Take that, crappy memory of mine! The original document can be found on the blog post accompanying this episode, which should be up by the end of today (7/24/2020 - I'm writing it now) so you can read it yourself. The Missing Web

"The Missing Web" is a story from the book "Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales" by Sir George Douglas (1901). Douglas, of course, is not the author of the story itself, merely the version of it presented in this book. I, for my part, modified it still further in order to keep a tolerable cadence and not drive you into madness with my poor Scottish accent and clumsy handling of the Gaelic language. The Finding of Fire

Though I missed it before the reading, I've been able to determine that this story is from the Yana peoples - a Native American tribe from Northern California. This story, then, should be dated between around the mid 17-hundreds BUT is probably significantly older since we do not know how long this tribe, or this story, existed before Curtin recorded it. And there should be many caveats in what I just said. Yana seems to be a language, while the peoples seem to be Ishi, or Yahi, but I'm not an expert - just a story sharer. If you have more information about this story, or about this tribe, I would love it if you could reach out and perhaps write something for our upcoming blog on this story - we need experts, and if that's you, well then, I hope you'll get in touch. Original story The Yana / Ishi People Write in, as an expert Names: Ahalamila, gray wolf; Au Mujaupa, master of fire; Chil Daiauna, big hail; Chil Wareko, big rain; Juhauju, west wind; Júkami, north wind; Jukilauyu, east wind; Juwaju, south wind; Gagi, crow; Metsi, coyote; Patcha, snow; Sabil Keyu, small hail; Shushu Marimi, dog woman; Siwegi, a small bird, unknown.
