Episode 211 – Victor Simonelli

This week marks the return of  Victor Simonelli on The Natural Essence House Show.  Simonelli is one of the New York’s finest and most prolific DJ’s. He was also one of the early pioneers of the unique NYC underground dance music movement that has now become a phenomenon in its own right and religiously followed by the clubbing faithful the world over. A producer/re-mixer, song writer, record label owner, and highly sought after DJ, are just four facets of this multi-talented young man.  His discography of production, writing. mixing and editing credits reads like a “Who’s Who!     A Bit More About This Weeks Guest   Victor’s love for music began as a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, New York.  At a young age he was intrigued by his father’s huge record collection of jazz, blues, electronic, disco, new age, rock, soul, classical, new wave, ethnic, and world music.  His parents could see he was talented at an early age and encouraged him to listen to all kinds of music.  With this encouragement, and guidance of his parents, Victor took lessons in piano, drums, guitar and bass, as well as voice lessons. But something was missing. “I liked trying all of the instruments, but nothing really grabbed me”. By the age of 11, he began tuning into NY’s Radio Mix Shows on WBLS, WKTU and WXLO, (which later became WRKS,98.7 Kiss FM) and this is where he discovered the Art of mixing.  “When I started spinning – I just simply got lost in the music,” Victor said. Victor’s career as a DJ started at a tender age , assisting his father.  In 1979 Victor played one of his first parties with his Dad. It was a party which his Dad organized at Dance Hall (which became a seasonal event in the years that followed). In Autumn of 1982 with his Father, he entered a Tommy Boy Records Master Mix contest via Mail, (promoted via Tommy Boy Rec and Dance Music Report Magazine) , sending A master Mix which Victor and His Dad had done (of Tommy Boy Rec’s Tracks). The winners of the Contest (who’s mix was featured on Tommy Boy Triple Album) turned out to be Tommy Musto, Tommy Sozzi , and Ralphie D (who Victor did not know at the time), though who were also Brooklynites. Within a year Victor started spinning at mobile parties on his own. It was here that he learn his craft and began to develop and fine-tune his ear for music noticing what tracks to play and which ones had the greatest effect on the crowd while he was spinning. His Mother heard had a friend with a small club that was closing it’s doors, and bought Victor their whole Record Collection before closing. By the end of High School Victor could not help But notice that , something was not right, “I wanted to not only mix the music,” Victor explained, “but I wanted to create the whole production”. Attending and graduating from the ‘Centre For Media Arts’ was the first step in that direction.  In 1987 after just about a year of trying to get an entry level position, Victor was hired for the job at Shakedown Studios, owned by the legendary producer, Arthur Baker – a breeding ground to the likes of David Cole (Who taught Victor how to determine the difference between a successful hook , and a not so memorable hook), Robert Clivilles (who advised Victor on getting good sound techniques) ,Danny Krivit, Benji Candalario, Albert Cabrera, Junior Vasquez (who gave victor many editing tips), and Bobby Konders (who learned to edit from Victor and who showed Victor Radio from the inside) , to mention but a few. Victor started his internship at the studio, and it was not long before his unique talent was discovered and he was given the opportunity to produce, mix and edit a wide range of projects for artists including: David Bowie, Will Downing, Talking Heads, Quincy Jones, Deborah Harry, Sinead O’Connor and Al Jarreau. During this time , Victor practically lived at Shakedown sound , in room with Tapes from Rick Rubin to Diana Ross , from Paul Simpson to Rolling Stones , from Afika Baambata to Hall and Oates. In late 1988, Victor merged with Lenny Dee to form the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, a remix/production team that worked on projects for Pajama Party, Al Jareau, Denise Lopez, Arthur Baker , Robert Owens , New Order.  Lenny had arrived at Shakedown after working for Nile Rodgers (lead member of Chic),Skyline studio, as an intern.  It was at this time that Victor completed one of his first productions on Criminal Records. His productions for Criminal, Vendetta (run By Larry Yazgar , who assisted Victor in Learning the importance of a 7″ version) and other labels such as Fourth Floor and Nu Groove began to get him noticed. It was not long before a line of labels across New York were beating a path to Victor’s door such as Strictly Rhythm, Eightball and Maxi to mention but a few. He began to collaborate on Projects with other Producers as well , such as Danny Krivit , Satoshie Tomie , to mention but a few and Simultaneously he signed a management deal with 23 West and went on to join a roster that boasted Masters At Work and C&C Music Factory.  He then moved over to Def Mix and was joined by Frankie Knuckles and Dave Morales (Who’s initials , DM , are the basis of Def Mix) and continued to work with Nu Groove and Fourth Floor. 1989-1991 saw Simonelli involved in many high profile projects, notably, composing Sybil’s single, “Oh How I Love You” (Next Plateau/London), arranging and editing James Brown’s album, “Love Overdue” (Scotti Bros) as well as BeBe and CeCe Winans single featuring Mavis Staples, entitled, “I’ll Take You There” (Capital). Victor was also on the production and mixing team for the Quincy Jones single, “I’ll be Good To You” (Qwest) featuring Chaka Khan and the legendary Ray Charles. Yvonne Turner , and Boyd Jarvis called on Victors talents on projects they were working, including Gwen Guthrie and Hamilton Bohannon. Brian Chin ex Billboard columnist , introduced Victor to Hamilton Bohannon , and Bohannon invited Victor to his home , where he explained to Victor the importance of Confidence in Self in connection with success. During this time Victor also wrote and produced for Martha Wash (unreleased project) and Sabrina Johnston (first recording as solo artist). When Danny Tenaglia moved back to NY during this time , (after spending most of the eighties living in Florida) , he saught Victors advise on one of his first Productions , playing demo for Victor before anyone else. Upon listening , it was clear for Victors ears what label it would work with. After Victor put his Edit/Arrangement touch to it , at the new Shakedown studio what became “The Harmonica Track” was ready , and then released on Arthur Bakers Minimal Records (which in later years was to be licensed onto Maxi ,and also be contained on Dave Mancusos Loft Compilation Box Set). Nile Rogers (Of Chic) and Victor met during this time , and Nile told Victor the importance of remembering Dreams (Reinforcing lesson Victors Mother taught him earlier in life) , and How many of the Chic tunes that he wrote were dreamt , having his guitar in his room with him , he would awake and put them down as they came. By 1992 Victor began receiving calls to DJ at clubs from countries as far away as Japan , thanks to Victors engineer of the time , Gomi. It was also at this time that two of Victor’s tracks, “Feel So Right” by Solution and “I Want you To Know” by Groove Committee (which Larry Levan championed in his sets at some of his final gigs in Japan) went on to become a significant piece of the ‘Simonelli Sound’.Todd Terry , approached Victor to commend , him on his works , and to license Production from him. Todd told Victor , “When you got a sound that’s working , just keep on with it”. 1993 saw Victor working on “In The .Closet” by Michael Jackson, featuring The Mystery Girl, Madonna (their only ever duet). At this point he began pumping out productions steadily, such as the blinding, “It’s So Good” by Creative Force , which then new to the business Mathius Heilbronn Engineered. The unforgettable , “I Know A Place” by Sound Of One , which Roger Sanchez released on his first Label at the time , and the classic “Dirty Games” on Nu Groove (USA) and Vinyl Solution (UK). Street Players Vol 1 EP was also made this year , which went onto inspire the making of Kenny Dopes “The Bomb” (which was created a couple of years later by Kenny). Deep Dish had not yet formed but both Sharam and Dubfire approached Victor and asked his advise on making tracks , equing , mixing , etc.Shortly thereafter they formed Yoshi Toshi Records and began Producing themselves. During this year Victor made his first of many trips to England, and helped set up Suburban Records with Tommy Musto who also owned Fourth Floor Records at the time. 1994 Victor worked on a variety of re-mixes for many artists including T-Connection , Jon Secada , Sabrina Pope (her first record) , Red-Light , Michael Proctor , Connie Harvey , Take That , and Fonda Rae as well as having written, produced and mixed songs for various underground dance music artists on Sub-Urban, Vinyl Solution UK, Eight Ball,Centre Stage Records, and many other independent labels around the world. This year saw Simonelli making his first trips to Italy, Germany, San Francisco, L.A., Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Ibiza, and France, which this in turn opened the flood gates and calls for him to DJ. Boy George connected with Victor , complementing him on his works , and asked to be informed of all of Victors Releases. Kerri Chandler early on in his production years , borrowed victors talents on his Ionosphere EP All Join Hands track this year. Episode 208 – Lady Duracell

This week marks the return of Get Lifted’s Lady Duracell. We are delighted to welcome her back to The Natural Essence House Show. Once again we have enlisted a guest with a real talent for selecting and mixing House Music, and we think you will hear and feel the love in this mix. Join us in welcoming Lady Duracell for her 3rd instalment on the show.   A Bit More About This Weeks Guest “The best part about this whole journey?  The friends for life that I’ve met along the way, through this mutual love of House Music” – Lady Duracell In August 1999, Lady Duracell stood in Es Paradis (Ibiza) and made a decision that would completely change her life.  When she returned to the UK, she borrowed a pair of Technics 1210’s from her friend DJ Chill, and for the next few months took every opportunity to teach herself to mix.   Her dedication & late nights paid off, and within 6 months, she had landed her first radio show, and played at the legendary Strawberry Sundae to 1500 people, where she later landed a weekly residency.   After being invited to join one of the UK’s leading underground radio stations, Passion fm, she shared her love of house music through her prime time shows, gaining the respect of DJ’s and a loyal fan base.  During this time, she helped to bring the spotlight to house music records & labels, often as exclusives, and had guest mixes from the likes of Louie Vega and more.    Her residencies included FunkIn You at Koko & Ibiza, and Bobby & Steve Presents at Herbal, and widely regarded as one of the busiest DJs on the circuit.  Playing at some of the best house music brands, and alongside some of the world’s major players, including Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Grant Nelson, Sandy Riviera, Tiger Stripes, Paul Trouble Anderson, Soul Avengerz, CJ Mackintosh, Timmy Regisford, DJ Spen, Booker T, Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, Martin Solvieg, and vocalists including Peyton, Ron Carroll, Michael Watford, Robert Owens, Joe Smooth, Keith Thompson, Margaret Grace, Barbara Tucker, Natasha Watts, Ce Ce Rogers, Robin S, Dajae and many others, she made her mark as one of the UK’s most sought after house DJs.  On SheJay.net she was voted 15th in a top female DJ poll and then In 2004, she was placed 4th in the UK People’s Choice Awards, a massive accolade after a relatively short time as a DJ.   As well as being an in demand DJ, Lady Duracell was also invited to choose & mix the backing track music for one of Nell McAndrew’s highly acclaimed fitness DVD’s – Cardio, Core and Stretch.  Dipping her toes into production, her first track under the Queen of Funk (UK) guise. “Es Paradis” was released on vinyl in 2006 and was played all over London’s airwaves and clubs. It reached number 9 on the in-house charts in HMV Oxford Street, and is featured on Nell McAndrew’s fitness DVD ‘Cardio, Core and Stretch’, and was used in the TV & online advertising.  Later, she would help create “Powerful DJ”, teaching aspiring DJ’s to mix, often taking on a mentor role.  She has also contributed to various online magazines including SheJay and RPM Magazine, and is renowned as an influential tastemaker.  Eventually she moved on from Passion fm & joined Push FM presenting a prime time radio show with guest mixes & interviews from Audiowhores, Alix Alvarez (Sole Channel), Marlon D (Underground Collective, Booker T (Kings of Soul) KlevaKeys, Pete DaFeet (Lost My Dog), Rasmus Faber (Farplane) & many more.   Around 2005, the Get Lifted parties and podcast were born, which came about through wanting to share the spirit and the vibes of House with like-minded souls.  They often joined forces with other house music brands including My Fairytale and Precious People at Pacha, and in conjunction with Roger Sanchez’ ‘Release Yourself’ party at Koko, and with the Swedish House Mafia – Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso at Koko, as well as a few parties at the White House, The End & Raduno.  After well over a decade since making that major decision in Ibiza in ’99, and her incredible achievements as a DJ,  Lady Duracell decided to take some time out to explore other aspects of the music business, and to put her energies into the Get Lifted podcast, which remains as popular as ever right across the globe, with a big fan base in the UK, USA & SA.  “I’ll always have this passion & love for house music.” Her unique natural affinity for music selection is the driving force that keeps her connected to her fans, and the mutual love of house music keeps them on the ride.    Now Lady Duracell has her first major collaboration with new clothing / accessories store –  Jack Fresh Online.  An exciting, brand new concept in apparel, which includes the Get Lifted range, and bringing ideas to the design team.  This is the beginning of a whole new chapter for Lady Duracell.      Playlist   Playlist To Follow   Podcast Broadcast Partners You can catch the show as its broadcast around the world via our Global Broadcast Partners.  You can download the show a week later via  iTunes.   Week 1 – Broadcast on the radio throughout the week on various stations every day. Episode 206 – Zaid Abdulrahim

This week marks the Natural Essence House Show debut for Soulful Horizons head honcho Zaid Abdulrahim. A Bit More About This Weeks Guest I am Zaid Abdulrahim from Long Island, NY. And I am the DJ/founder of Soulful Horizons Music which started in 2014 throwing its first parties in Harlem USA. My style of music is soulful and Afro House music that touches the spirit. As Louie Vega once told me his first advice to any DJ is to “Play from the heart”. From the humble beginnings of throwing my own events in order to get exposure we are excited to establish Soulful Horizons Music. The story starts at about age 5 being blessed with a natural gift of dance. Being able to feel the music unlike others around me and interpret that into a dance motion that was considered very smooth and fluid. I continued to use that feeling to determine what is good music to my soul and what is not but what makes me move. I started off as a rapper at age 12 surrounded by Djs such as Biz Markie, Diamond Jay and Diamond Shell thus the introduction to beat production and studio exposure was given to me at a very impressionable point in my life and has stuck with me ever since. My family has been in music production for many generations. Starting with Thom Bell who produced for the Stylistics, Delfonics, Elton John, Dionne Warwick and James Ingram to name a few. Followed by Ron Bell who is one of the founding members of Kool and the Gang. Also, Jerry Bell from the Daz Band, Archie Bell of Archie Bell and the Drells and Leroy Burgess the lead singer and producer from the group Black Ivory. As time passed I gravitated more towards the positive energy of House Music and the Love I saw in the culture. I have been blessed to meet many beautiful people. In 2015 I teamed up with the Are You Afro? Movement in the WMC Miami 2015 Conference. This was a major breakthrough for me because I was given an opportunity to open for Anane and Louie Vega at the Nulu Party along with playing three dates with Are you Afro? I am very thankful for those chances to shine and I am using the momentum to take advantage of a bright future. My goal has always been music production and we have finally reached that stage. We currently have dates across the nation coming up. Music releases and collaborations will be distributed world wide with our chain of partners. To keep up with our events please register your email address. By doing so not only will you be kept unto date but also will have access to exclusive mixes and merchandise. Also, access to the guestlist at specified events. Episode 204 – DJ “Greg G” Anderson

This week marks the return of  New Jersey-based DJ /Producer and The FOLB Mix show host DJ Greg G Anderson.  Back for another guest show, A long time supporter of Natural Essence Media, You can find many of our releases featured on his weekly FOLB Mix show.  Femi Natural Essence catch’s up with Greg G Anderson, ahead of his guest mix for The Natural Essence House Show.   A Bit More About This Weeks Guest   How did you get started as a DJ? DJ Greg G: I started to DJ back in 1979 while still in high school, I can remember telling Billy “B-Star” Barton this was something I really wanted to get into and he gave me his full support.  Billy took me under his wing and showed me what equipment to get and how to start thinking like a DJ.  I started out loving old school Hip Hop DJ Break beats & that grew into playing just about everything. In 1983 I collaborated up with Mark Cudney and we created the “IMC Crew” where we played rock and hip hop to mixed crowds locally. We had combined our music equipment together to make a nice mobile sound system.  I grew up listening to the radio, NYC’s 92 KTU with Paco and the Latin Rascals, listening to WHBI with the Supreme Team and Jay Bloodrock , Kiss FM checking out Tony Humphries & John Robinson, WSOU- South Orange, NJ. I can remember the feeling I got from attending various basement parties when the DJ’s like Kenny Barrow, Doctor Boogie, Kilowatt used to lay down vibes by playing records that you could not hear anywhere else. When did you first introduced to House Music? DJ Greg G: In the early 80’s I used to go to a club in Asbury Park called “Club 12 “ here is where I really began to see how people were reacting to “house music” on the dance floor, nice melodies and big beats. I considered myself to be a Hip Hop DJ but being exposed to this music made me broaden my horizon and not be close minded, I felt the music changing my musical taste. TJ the DJ would always give me the names of whatever he was playing at Club 12.  In order to get these records I often took bi-weekly trips into NYC to Crazy Music, Downtown Records, Music Factory, Decadance & Rock N Soul; this is where I met Benji Candelario who has been a huge influence on me as well in my time as a DJ. When did you get your first taste of radio? DJ Greg G: In 1983 I got my first got my first taste of actual radio programming at NSB Radio in NYC. I had a weekly show where I played records for a small 30-minute syndicated show where I had to actually read off commercials in between songs. Then on a trip to London back in 1996 while working as the USA buyer for Release The Groove in the UK, I had an opportunity to DJ as a guest on Jeremy Newall’s show on the pirate radio station “106.5 Girls FM” the feeling I got after that show had me knowing that this was something I knew I wanted to do on a regular basis. It was just about getting the right opportunity and to apply myself when the time was right. I currently do the following weekly syndicated mix shows under the “ FOLB Mix” name. These include, “Philly Nites Radio” in Philadelphia, “Maluti Deep House Sessions” with RazChriz in NYC, “ChillOut Radio “in Africa, “House Nation Radio “in France, “Pure Electro Radio” in France, “Deepvibes Radio “in London.  As you can see I have a very well rounded weekly “global” presence in pushing good music. In the past I have had guest DJ spots on House Station Radio in Italy, Rise and Shine Show, Chicago, Radio X in Germany & WNYU in NYC. Tell us more about your production work? DJ Greg G: In 1990 I started working for a small record label in NYC called “Cupid Records” run by Elis Pacheco and Larry Sands.  I wrote and produced my first record back in 1991 on New Jersey’s “New Generation Records” Treat me right with vocals by Monica when I was a member of the production team “The Combinations” with Johnny Nunez, over the years we also did many underground records that were distributed through (SOM) sound of music by Tony Rodriguez.  In 1998, I decided to start my own label up “Urban Vision Records “I released a few records but it was a huge learning experience to release vinyl records. You had to have very good distribution otherwise you would have to go from store selling your records out of the trunk of your car in order to turn your records over consistently & between NJ & NYC. Those times were much different than the digital age we live in now. Tell us more about FOLB (Friends of Long Branch) and the show associated with it?  DJ Greg G: The origin of the FOLB (Friends of Long Branch) name FOLB started around five years ago as a one-time party event held at a local bar the “My Way Café” the day right after Thanksgiving. We gave this party as a way to give thanks to good friends. The response by all those who attended was so great that I ran more events, culminating with a 5-year anniversary party this past December. I am the DJ at each FOLB event, while my long-time business partner of thirty-nine years and friend, Billy “B-Star” Barton, tackles the logistics and other details to run a smooth operation. Our parties are like a huge reunion, we play mostly classics, and it’s a throwback party when people see old friends they want to hear music they remember. The mix show name actually started up when we had a quiet period of the doing the parties, I put together a 80 minute mix that I shared on my friends walls every 2 weeks on Facebook & the internet and then people started asking me “where is the FOLB Mix?” so for a while I always listed it as I was going to do a podcast under that moniker. The mix show represents where I’m from & the music brings people together in a special way. As a DJ I will never be bigger than the music I play. I have seen too many DJ’s feel they bigger than life and that is just not a realistic approach….as the music changes and you to adjust to different trends as well, It’s very easy to get humbled in the game of music.  Playlist 01- The Lone Crusader (SoulCiety Main Mix) / Antonio Ocasio 02- What Is Love ( Original Mix) / Itchy Lemon, Tracebeatz & Bob 03- I Want You – Yoliswa Will Jordan Remix / Yoliswa 04- Zulu Lounge (Original Mix) / BlaqueSoul Ft. Episode 199 – Lady Duracell

This week marks the return of Get Lifted’s Lady Duracell.  We are delighted to welcome her back to The Natural Essence House Show. Once again we have enlisted a guest with a real talent for selecting and mixing House Music, and we think you will hear and feel the love in this mix.  Join us in welcoming Lady Duracell for her second instalment on the show. Playlist 1.
