3 Tools to get out of your way with Juliet Vorster on Beyond Beliefs

Or perhaps the question should be, “Who’s stopping you?” As hard as it may be to accept, we are the ones who most hamper our own progress. Generally speaking it’s not intentional, and we frequently don’t know we’re doing it, but trust me, we are. I do it. You do it, and probably most everyone on the planet does it to some degree. Here’s a few ways we hamper our own progress: Procrastination – humming and hawing, but never making a decision Filling our time – “I don’t have time” is a common thing I hear from clients Numbing – eating, shopping, drinking, playing video games, getting lost in Facebook Land Worrying about what others think Comparing ourselves with others Listening to the critical voice in our head, and believing it I could fill the page with different ways we keep ourselves stuck in a limited situation. It’s okay, we’re human, it’s what we do. The good news is that we don;t have to keep doing what we’ve always done; particularly if we want different results. In this week’s Beyond Beliefs I offer three simple tools that will help you get out of your own way, and move in the direction of your dreams. This week’s musical inspiration comes from Kit Holmes, Michael Gott and Karen Drucker. Please support these independent artists if their music moves you.

Living a kind and compassionate life with Debi Barr

We have reached the last Reiki principle, “Just for today be kind to all living things”. By this point in our series of Reiki principles you are perhaps noticing the underlying concept – that we are all connected. The new world of quantum physics is opening up deeper understanding of energy and the fact that we are all intrinsically linked. This principle invites us to look at the concept of being connected – what we do to others we do to ourselves so be kind to all people – and that includes you! Do you consider yourself to be a kind person? What is kindness? According to Wikipedia, kindness is “a behaviour marked by ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and concern for others.” Another definition is “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate”. It is relatively easy to be kind to those whom we love and to those whom we respect. It is not so easy to be kind to those whom we have difficulty with! However, Usui doesn’t say “Be kind to some of the people some of the time” – he says “Be kind to all living things”, sometimes translated as “Be kind to all people”. I prefer the “all living things” translation because I feel that we should practice kindness and consideration towards animals and plants and not just other people. I feel we are all connected and therefore kindness should be the foundation upon which we build our lives – it costs nothing to be kind! So what about these people that perhaps push our buttons – those to whom we find it difficult to practice kindness? Some teachings say that what irritates us most about someone is often a mirror image of what we don’t like about ourselves. This one is a hard one to hear! For example – if you dislike someone because they are overly critical or judgemental does that mean that perhaps you criticise or judge people too? This is where the last principle comes into action – do your work honestly. So be honest with yourself – would that be the case? Sometimes our belief patterns and thinking can get in the way of us being kind. Fear, guilt, resentment and criticism stop us from being kind. These emotions and limiting belief patterns keep us stuck in a negative spiral where we feel like the victim. If you notice that you are in this loop then it is time to break free from it! No more being the victim – switch out the negatives and choose to be more positive. As I stated right back at the start of this series of articles, we always have a choice in how we think, feel and behave. It is easy to fall prey to victim mentality but that stops you from experiencing the powerful healing benefits of positivity and kindness. It is time to create a more positive, compassionate and tolerant world don’t you think? It all starts with you! In the UK we are at a disadvantage because we have been brought up to be reined in and restrained. We find it hard to be positive about ourselves or to express ourselves in a loving way. The British stiff upper lip has a lot to answer for! Religion has a part to play too. I was brought up in a Christian household and often heard the verse, “Love your neighbour as yourself”. I think, however, that the focus was always on the first part of that sentence and the emphasis was to always put others first. It appeared to be the “Christian thing to do” – to put others first and to love them more than we loved ourselves. That is not what it says though! It says “Love your neighbour as yourself” – in other words as you love yourself. So do you love yourself? Read more on Natural Health Radio www.naturalhealthradio.co.uk

Living in Gratitude - Reiki Principles in Action

Usui’s third precept is “Just for today be thankful”. Are you a thankful person? Are you full of gratitude or do you regularly complain about your lot? When Usui formulated this principle I believe he was asking us to do more than just say “thank you”. He was asking for us to develop an attitude of gratitude. It seems that in our society we always want to have more – a bigger house, a better car, more money, or more stuff. We say things like, “I need a new car” or “I need a new top”. We are getting our needs and our wants mixed up! We actually forget what we do have because we are constantly focusing on what we don’t have. I believe Usui was asking us to focus on the blessings we have in our life and to become grateful. So how do we do this and how to we differentiate our needs from our wants? Psychologist, Abraham Maslow, (1908-70) came up with a hierarchy of needs which I think is a useful illustration of this concept. Basing our needs on a triangle he came up with 5 groups of needs. Living without Worry - Reiki Principles in Action with Debi Barr

Last time we looked at living without anger – how have you found it? Have you managed to pause and reflect before reacting in the habitual way? This month I want to look at the second Reiki principle “Just for today, do not worry”. Whereas anger is an emotional response, worry is a thought process. Did you know that you have over 60,000 thoughts per day?! I’d love to know who actually got paid to count them! To understand worry, we need to understand how we think. Thoughts help us to make sense of the world around us. The brain receives information and manipulates it into a model in the mind which we then perceive as thoughts. These thoughts can be positive or negative in nature. Your thoughts carry energy vibrations – and before you think “Oh no here she goes again with all that mumbo-jumbo energy vibe thing”, science backs this up! Scientists can measure thoughts in the brain using specialised equipment and they have shown that thoughts do indeed have specific vibrations, and furthermore, there is a difference between positive and negative thoughts. Positive ones have higher vibrations as we would expect. The new world of Quantum Physics is highlighting that we are all connected energetically and that the universe as we know it is actually all energy and created by the observer: - A fundamental conclusion of the new physics also acknowledges that the observer creates the reality. As observers, we are personally involved with the creation of our own reality. Physicists are being forced to admit that the universe is a “mental” construction. Pioneering physicist Sir James Jeans wrote: “The stream of knowledge is heading toward a non-mechanical reality; the universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter, we ought rather hail it as the creator and governor of the realm of matter. (R. C. Henry, “The Mental Universe”; Nature 436:29, 2005) Read the rest on Natural Health Radio
