Ep. 136: Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Episode in Night Howls
All good things must to come to an end...and apparently the mediocre ones too. They've been away from their children for far too long.  Happy Halloween, Howlers! This week, Matt and Cody return to the pod to discuss the movie that brought them together in the first place. The boys talk homophobic slurs, midnight movies cures, and where and when they weres...when first experiencing this film in the wild. Not to mention: the legacy of Robert Englund, Ronny Who Could Do It Better, the importance of balance, and who they were really rooting for all along. Most importantly, they say goodbye to Night Howls and this incredible experience that brought so many of you into their lives. It's a finale for many but mainly for them and they can't thank you enough for joining on this ride.  Socials: @nighthowlspod

Ep. 135: The Howlers '24

Episode in Night Howls
It's the end of the world as we know it...and year 3 apparently... This week, Matt and Cody unwrap their favorite episode of the year: The Howlers! The boys talk all about this year in horror including the tops and bottoms of their year-end lists, trends of the year in the genre, and what they hope to take into 2025. Then, it's time for the Awards as they give out such iconic categories as: Barclay's Bronze Baby Bonnet, Sally Hardesty Leap Through a Window, Doomsayer of the Year, Howler's Choice, Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor and most contentiously (for some reason) Outstanding Animal. It's their chance to celebrate the films and performances of the year and you for coming along on the journey! Photos of the nominees can be found on their socials below if you prefer to follow along visually. Happy Howlidays! Thanks for listening! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Ep. 134: Black Christmas (1974)

Episode in Night Howls
Don we now our SLAY apparel! (A green turtleneck)  This week, Cody and Matt celebrate the holidays with this proto-slasher pioneer! They discuss the political and social atmosphere that inspired the film's core narrative, how this movie inspired the genre moving forward, and the art direction that brings the holiday spirit to life. They also praise Bob Clark for hitting the mark, Margot Kidder for being the booziest babysitter, and Marian Waldman for gifting us all with a veteran character performance that will last an eternity. "B" might be for booze but it's all "A's" in our book.  Thanks for listening and Happy Howlidays! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Ep. 133: Longlegs (2024)

Episode in Night Howls
Daddy...those gross guys are back again... This week, Matt and Cody and Anthony and Oz and Ruby and Ruth and Harker and Agent...uhhh Carter take a polaroid of the year in Horror by concluding their 2024 run with the GOAT (worshipping) Longlegs! The boys talk about marketing and expectations, what to expect when you release the Cage, and how prevalent the devil is in those details. They also go off on where the plot falls, the dolls under the halls, and you guessed it, contaminated balls.  Consider this their Thanksgiving episode and they brought a turkey you won't soon forget. Ep. 132: Oddity (2024)

Episode in Night Howls
You've heard of a wooden performance but this is ridiculous.  This week, Cody and Matt begin renovations on their new Irish castle and discover one of this year's most overlooked hits! They discuss clever dialogue, effective narrative threads, and the fine art of weaving different types of horror together cohesively. On top of all that, the boys also discuss what they claim to be some of the greatest scares of the year while debating the usefulness of an Irish hole. That's... not what it sounds like. Pack up your wooden man and head for the hills because things are about to get odd! Thanks for listening! Ep. 131: MadS (2024)

Episode in Night Howls
Overtake! Overtake! This week, Matt and Cody are in the calm before the storm and jumping into the bed of a truck towards the end of the world! The boys talk all about "oners", drug laden youths, and the contagion subgenre, while also having a field day with nosy neighbors, impossible devices, cool cars, and even find time to break out their maybe definitely not French accents. Don't worry, they go all out over theories of the outbreak, the terror of being interrupted at karaoke, and the origins of Al, famously of the Canal. No paprika was harmed during the making of this episode...THEY ASSUME! Thanks for listening! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Ep. 130: I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

Episode in Night Howls
Help them! Help them! They're still podcasting! This week, Cody and Matt enter the Midnight Realm and go toe-to-toe with Mr. Melancholy over the latest feature film from director Jane Shoenbrun. They discuss the relationship between nostalgia and media, the dizzying perspective of alternate realities, and the benefit of queer and trans voices in the horror medium. The boys also spar over stylistic direction while trying to figure out which one of them is Marco and which is Polo. Don't sit too close to the screen, you'll mess up your eyes! Thanks for listening! Ep. 129: Night of the Demons (1988)

Episode in Night Howls
"Happy Halloween, dear..." It's part two of the Night Howls annual Howl-o-ween Double Feature and these films are bringing double the night, double the demons, and double the howls. This week, Matt and Cody cover a staple of the 80's video nasties with Angela, Suzanne, and other character names the boys still can't get right. They talk all about the Goth Glam of Angela and the lack thereof for the other characters. But it's not all bad, they have a lot to say about grosteque monster effects, deadly places to boink, next-level spooky atmosphere, homages to other classics, and one of the most shocking last-minute Fred Gwynne wins ever covered.  Give us a hand or at least an ear. It's time to celebrate the most wonderful time of year! Thanks for listening! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Ep. 128: Night of the Demon (1957)

Episode in Night Howls
Curses! It's Halloween and you've got an appointment... with a Demon! This week, Cody and Matt place a hex on each other with a double feature straight from Hell. First, they discuss the mystery of Stonehenge, the danger of downed telephone lines, and proper airplane etiquette. They also mull over the fears of children and the influence mysticism has on the horror genre. If that isn't enough for you, they've got a cult leader with suspiciously textured facial hair to discuss named Karswell... or Carsdale... or Karnsdale...  What? Were you looking for a Halloween miracle? They still can't remember anyone's name.  Thanks for listening! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Ep. 127: Hush (2016)

Episode in Night Howls
Here, killer killer! This week, Matt and Cody have one of their loudest discussions about one of the quietest movies they've ever covered. The boys talk all about the home invasion sub-genre, the power couple that is Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, and how to make a simple story feel complex. Not to mention: bitchy cats, burglar tats, and questionable strat...egies. Plus! Stay tuned for the latter half to hear the special Beyond Fest Q+A for all of the fun behind the scenes you could want. Thanks for listening! You better watch out... Toss out those jack-o'-lanterns and slam the door on those trick or treaters because we're about to have a bloody good Christmas. This week, Cody and Matt check their stockings and discuss ferocious filmmaking ,narrative nuances, and grotesque gore. As expected, the boys go all out on Art the Clown while discussing physical bits, comic timing, and how David Howard Thornton has earned his place in horror history. Ep. 125: The People Under the Stairs (1991)

Episode in Night Howls
BURN IN HELL! This week, Matt and Cody are certainly the secretaries of something as they deep-dive into this Wes Craven cult classic, while also celebrating the birthdays of Fool, Wendy Robie, and one of the top two hosts of this program. The boys talk about the social and political ramifications of the film...just kidding...you know they have a field day with odd make-up choices, precarious tarot illustrations, fairy-tale parallels, doors in other doors, viciously adorable pups, one of the iconic mothers of horror, and why exactly are the people under there anyway...Not to mention: a fun recent celebrity run-in they had this spooky season. This one's sure to scare your hair white so turn the tv towards the crack and  guard your doubloons! Thanks for listening! Socials: https://linktr.ee/nighthowlspod

Between reels, the boys discuss troubled writers, effective jump scares, and the this films greater context in the horror landscape of the 2010's. They also buddy up with Sheriff Grizzled, Deputy So-and-So, and Professor Skype. Trust them, it'll make sense by the end of the episode. Ep. 123: Die! Die! My Darling! (1965)

Episode in Night Howls
MILK! This week, Matt and Cody are Back! Back! We're Sorry! The boys talk about their Summer apart and are taking this week's pick all the way to the bank...head. They discuss the life and legacy of the iconic Tallulah Bankhead and the "old biddy" subgenre while also having a hay..hair?...day with scene-chewing performances, hilarious European driving techniques, pro-wrestling maids, incredibly sexy portraiture, and boggy blue boys left below. Not to mention, they are joined by this week's listener recommender and mutual long-time friend, Terrie Miller, to get her take on what gave this film it's lasting impact. They're drowning in Bankhead impressions over here so unless you want to end up soggy in a basement, turn this car around while you still have a chance! Thanks for listening! Episode in Night Howls
How do you solve a problem like The Strangers? With one hell of a solid sequel, apparently! This week, Cody and Matt rejoin the terrifying trio at a lakeside retreat where only the finest of veteran character actors retire. They discuss 80's inspiration, nuclear family annihilation, and sequel anticipation while trying to figure out what happens after 10pm in Gatlin. They also pitch their ideas for a third entry in this continuity and how they feel about a complete reboot with Chapter One.  Something strange is in the air... and it's probably this show! Not to mention: ineffective felines, shocking chest pains, the fear of  going through a thin layer of mist, gender dynamics in heroic people, terrifying creature aesthetics, and why everyone refers to Sir Ridley Scott as such.
