Southern Ground Hunting - Ground Hunting 101 with Land Smathers

This week on SGH we're talking with Land Smathers from Mississippi. Land is a very successful public land hunter and rarely ever leaves the ground to do it. Hunting from the ground has some challenges that we hope Land can help us overcome, however, he also talks about the many benefits that you get from not hunting from an elevated position.  We get it. Sometimes being elevated is necessary. We're die hard saddle hunters and will not be changing that aspect in the near future, but when you open up to the possibility of hunting without carrying in all of the gear associated with climbing...well you've walked into the apex of mobile hunting. As Land mentions, ground hunting is a "tale as old as time". From the dawn of creation, hunters have been killing animals without being in a tree. Hopefully this episode will broaden your horizon and open up new realms of possibilities for getting on public land bucks wherever you may be.  Become a SGH Patron: https://www.patreon.com/SouthernGroundHunting Our Partners: Spartan Forge - Use the code “southernground” at www.spartanforge.ai to save 25% on your membership GoWIld -  Use the code “southernground” on your gear purchases to save 10%    https://timetogowild.com/profile/RkFymLZ3lAc4odGNudd2Lw Tethrd - www.tethrdnation.com Nucanoe - www.nucanoe.com Skre Gear - Use the code “southernground” at www.skregear.com to save 15% on your purchase   Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast.

Land & Legacy - What Else Can You Learn from the B&C Distribution Map

Big deer only grow where crops are grown! Wrong! That's been the commonly accepted answer after a quick evaluation of the Boone and Crocket entries map. That is a very surface-level takeaway from that map.  When you study that map and begin to think, I don't live in crop country, you may say to yourself, can I really expect to shoot big deer? The answer is yes, and the route to achieve that is not to bring the crops to your less productive soils. The answer is to not conform to the overall landscape management practices that your area is conducting. If you live in pasture country, don't manage pastures in the commonly accepted way. If you live in timber country, manage your timber differently. The B&C map shows us that the areas with fewer entries is not the way to grow big deer, it suggests different management approaches must be taken in those areas.  Don't settle for less when you can change your management style to meet the needs of deer to reach optimization for your hunting property.    Land & Legacy is powered by Simple Cast.

Missouri Woods & Water - A Hunters Love For The Sport Has No Limits

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast, host Nate Thomas gets to talk with guests Vince Houseman and Tristan Williams about Vince's first ever buck with a bow.  Vince was born with spina bifida, but has never let that slow him down in anything he does.  So when he decided he wanted to start bow hunting, he and his great friend Tristan got to work and it paid off for Vince this year.  Another awesome aspect of this story is the close bond Tristan and Vince have formed centered around the outdoors, but has now grown into more of a brotherhood. Vince should be an inspiration to all of us, proving that you are only limited by your drive to succeed and nothing else.  Congratulations to Vince on his first archery buck, certainly not his last.   Missouri Woods & Water is powered by Simple Cast.

Land & Legacy - Woody Browse with Dr. Will Gulsby

Sure we all know and accept that deer like acorns, tender leaves, and "food plots". But, that is an elementary understanding of what deer actually eat. When you dive deeper into the annual foraging needs, the metabolic process, and availability of resources, you take your understanding of deer and their requirements to a new level.  Everyone always wants to talk about the protein content of the latest and greatest feed they put down on the ground, but protein isn't all that deer seek. Other elements like calcium, phosphorus, boron, etc... all play a role in the deer's diet. They don't receive these various micronutrients by eating the same plant, food plot blend, or feed you put on the ground every day. When you begin to explore this deeper, you find that the foraging behavior and nutrient needs follow what is naturally produced on the landscape. So to meet these needs let's first understand on a deeper level, how nature works. This week we discuss the role of forbs, woody browse, browse, hard mast, soft mast, grasses, and fungi.  Do not miss this podcast! This is critical to understand if you want to grow healthier, bigger, or more deer. Give this podcast a listen and a share!    Land & Legacy is powered by Simple Cast.

Huntavore - After The Shot Thoughts with Paul Rhodes

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick was able to take a healthy sized doe in the early part of October.  Now the preparation comes into play.  Nick sits down with Paul Phodes, author and creator of Sizzlin Arrow.  Together talk about the things you will need for an effective field kit, the skilled art of field dressing, and to embrace this powerful moment with your harvest. No need to skip corners here. The guys also touch on some cut up and preservation ideas that will have you making some notes before getting your harvest.  All this and more on the next episode of Huntavore. Paul Rhodes, creator of Sizzlin Arrow, is an advocate for taking more control of your food.  Whether it's making choices on where to source quality farm produce or actually heading to the woods to kill for your own meat.  Paul also is involved with talking college students afield to  hunt for deer and turkey in his home state of North Carolina.  Couldn’t think of a better person to chat with about field dressing. Field dressing is a powerful moment.  It's the moment where the once living creature is transformed into a carcass for food.  For several reasons folks skim over this process; its gross, its bloody, its intimidating, and not a lot of people have been taught the whole process.  Paul walks us through his method.  True tip here is using your fingers as guides cutting the underbelly from the inside out. Protecting that gut from knicks and tears.  Second would be to get the anus out.  Nothing to be worried about cutting inside the pelvic cavity.  Run your blade along the pelvic bone, on the inside and it will free the colon enough to pull free. Paul and Nick go back and forth on steps of chilling the carcass, breaking it down into whole muscle or into pre-portioned meals, and how both guys appreciate the vac seal style of bagging the cuts.  You can find more about what Paul is up to at: sizzlinarrow.com or @sizzlinarrow on instagram. Southern Ground Hunting - How To Take Podcast Tactics & Apply Them To Your Own Hunting. IT WORKS!

On the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we really want to be an example of applying tactics that we have heard from our guests and sharing the outcomes. This season will be no different. We're going to be bi-weekly sharing our experiences in the woods through February, largely based on the things we have talked to our guests about. This week, Parker and Drew share their stories of the arrows that have been tossed over the last couple of weeks. Parker has been able to kill a couple of does, and Drew was robbed by an unforeseen branch. That being said, they put the tactics talked about by Dave Owens and Warren Womack in previous episodes and it worked!  Listen up! We believe that podcasts like this one really can help you be more successful in the woods. We seriously think that if you will evaluate and adapt our guest's information & our experiences to your hunting situation, it can make you better and find success yourself.  Become a SGH Patron: https://www.patreon.com/SouthernGroundHunting Our Partners: Spartan Forge - Use the code “southernground” at www.spartanforge.ai to save 25% on your membership GoWIld -  Use the code “southernground” on your gear purchases to save 10%    https://timetogowild.com/profile/RkFymLZ3lAc4odGNudd2Lw Tethrd - www.tethrdnation.com Nucanoe - www.nucanoe.com Skre Gear - Use the code “southernground” at www.skregear.com to save 15% on your purchase   SGH is powered by Simple Cast.
