Neuroweapons Are a Reality: Cognitive Warfare and the OODA Loop | James Giordano, PhD

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Neuroweapons, cognitive warfare, and the real OODA loop. Dr. James Giordano returns to No Way Out three years after his first appearance (Ep 35) to show how dispositions shape what we observe before we ever orient. Dr. Giordano is Special Advisor to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War (CBRN) and Head of the Center for Strategic Deterrence and Weapons of Mass Destruction Studies of the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. He retired from Georgetown University Medical Center after a 20-year career as Professor Emeritus of Neurology, Biochemistry and Ethics. With Brian "Ponch" Rivera he walks through the dOODAc loop, his extension of John Boyd's OODA loop with dispositions in front and consequences at the back, and the two test it against Boyd's own sketches. From there the conversation moves into the cognitive domain as biological, psychological, and social at once, how each layer becomes a target, and why he describes directed energy neuroweapons as a clear and present threat. He closes on human-machine teaming, DoD Directive 3000.09, and a model his team calls SYNTHCOM that keeps decision authority with the human. Dr. Giordano's connection dropped about 40 minutes in, and he finished the conversation audio-only from the National Defense University. The Top Gun Bird Strike Nobody Noticed: Intent-Based Leadership | Gareth Holebrook

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Gareth Holebrook spent eighteen years trying to qualify for Kona. He got there in 2022 and collapsed seven kilometres from the finish. He does not tell it as a triumph. He tells it as a governance failure: effort continuing after awareness had already stopped. A former Royal Navy weapons engineer who spent six years working with David Marquet on intent-based leadership and ran the agile practice at Visa, Gareth joins Brian "Ponch" Rivera to argue that capable people rarely fail from lack of capability. They fail because nothing governs the decision once it is underway. They cover who owns a decision after it is made, the Santa Fe, crew resource management, the limits of checklists, Tim Noakes and the central governor, what a leader does in a complex domain when they genuinely do not know, and a Top Gun Maverick scene Ponch had watched and missed. Late in the conversation Gareth explains why he thinks Boyd's loop is not a sequence of four things and is not about cycling faster. He got there from endurance sport and organisational decision governance, having never studied Boyd. Stop Telling Swimmers What To Do: Constraints-Led Approach & the Real OODA Loop | Andrew Sheaff

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Andrew Sheaff wrote the only book on the constraints-led approach to swim coaching. He joins No Way Out to explain why telling a swimmer what to do almost never changes how they swim, and what a coach can do instead. Sheaff spent more than fifteen years coaching on deck at Virginia, Northwestern, Bucknell, and Maryland, on staffs that produced conference and NCAA team championships, American records, world championships, and Olympic medals. He now partners with performance programs to build skill development systems into training they already run. He came to swimming late, trained his way past the skill gap, then hit a wall in college when getting stronger stopped paying. That wall sent him looking. He found Keith Davids and the constraints-led approach through a strength and conditioning blog, and spent the years since working out how to make the theory practical on a pool deck with forty kids and one whistle. The problem he describes is one every coach knows. At ten swimmers to a coach, best case you speak to each kid one time in ten. And nobody can hold their elbow at 98 degrees instead of 97 in their head while their heart rate sits at 180. So Sheaff builds the correction into the activity. Put a buoy between the legs and the kick disappears, so the arms have to solve the problem. Turn the paddle upside down and the forearm has to face backward. Cap the stroke count and patience stops being a suggestion. Brian "Ponch" Rivera hears John Boyd's destruction and creation in this, and Sheaff confirms the mechanism without having read a word of Boyd. Destabilize the old pattern at low intensity, rebuild it there, then crank the speed and the fatigue back up. That independent arrival is the premise of this show: a swim coach in Richmond and a fighter pilot in Virginia Beach describing the same loop from opposite ends of the world. The conversation covers implicit guidance and control, which in a pool means teaching a swimmer to feel the difference between the old way and the new way rather than waiting on a coach who will not be there in the race. It covers education of attention, which Ponch recognizes from the fighter aviation debrief. And it covers the thing many coaches have backwards, which is that racing is the test and practice is where the improvement happens. Sheaff is direct about the limits. Theory is rarely the bottleneck. Most coaches already own the drills and have not organized them around the skills that actually make a swimmer fast. For coaches and program directors in any sport, this is what the constraints-led approach looks like after twenty years in the water. John Boyd's Destruction and Creation at 50: The Paper Behind the Real OODA Loop

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Fifty years ago today, on 3 September 1976, John Boyd published Destruction and Creation. Almost nobody who talks about the OODA loop has read it. Mark "Moose" McGrath and Brian "Ponch" Rivera the paper's fiftieth anniversary, with multiple versions on screen.  Mark argues the paper is the kernel that everything Boyd wrote for the next twenty years is built on. He walks the fusion at its center: the second law of thermodynamics, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, and Gödel's incompleteness theorem, three ideas Boyd was told did not belong together. Then he puts each in plain language. You cannot know everything. You cannot use algebra to prove algebra. You have to be outside a system to judge it. The conversation traces Chuck Spinney's lineage from energy maneuverability theory through Destruction and Creation to asymmetric fast transients, which is why speed was never the point. It covers Boyd's 1972 letters home, the years he spent arguing with thousands of books, the difference between the drafts and the published text on observer and observed, and the moment Navy TOPGUN pilots told Boyd he had left the human in the cockpit out of his equation. Mark closes with five questions for anyone who still teaches the OODA loop as a circle with four arrows. Mark Joined from Buenos Aires, where Mark is running a deliberate experiment in crashing and rebuilding his own orientation. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. The Decision Feels Like Your Own: Cognitive Warfare and the Real OODA Loop | Sara Russo

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail John Boyd argued that machines do not fight wars and terrain does not fight wars. Humans fight wars, and they fight them with their minds. He named the mechanism as well, in the strategic game of interaction and isolation: stay connected to the outside world so you keep testing what you believe, and cut your opponent off from theirs so their picture of reality drifts from the one they have to act in. That is why Ponch Rivera stayed out of the cognitive warfare discussion for years. No Way Out has covered the ground with Giordano, Malone, Perez, and Pappa. What Ponch would not do is treat it as a new discipline, because Boyd already named the mechanism and information warfare was already in doctrine. NATO changed that. Their 2025 cognitive warfare work is strong, and Ponch says so on the record. It also puts the real OODA loop on the page and then describes it linearly, as observe, then orient, then decide, then act. That description cannot hold feedback and it cannot hold perception. Once the alliance was using Boyd's loop to explain the fight for the mind, and using it wrong, sitting out stopped being an option. So he brought in Sara Russo, a PhD candidate in Defence and Security Studies in Rome working with the Italian Ministry of Defence's advanced studies school and the University of Turin, and asked her to show him what the label buys. Her definition arrives in the first five minutes: the most sophisticated influence never gives you a command, it shapes the environment so the decision feels like your own. Ponch hears the constraints-led approach in it instantly, and the two of them spend the next hour finding the same mechanism from opposite directions. They cover nodes, edges, and centrality. Why the informal organization chart is the attack surface, and why a receptionist can be the most important node in a building. Emotion as the entry point, backed by published research from an Italian Navy training exercise. Why cognitive warfare is cheap compared to a tank, how bots manufactured scale during the Gilets Jaunes movement, and how algorithms get weaponized through poisoned inputs. Russo lays out the Italian Ministry of Defence three-layer model of influence, technology, and the medical layer, with brain-computer interfaces where they meet. Ponch maps those layers onto Boyd's orientation: genetic heritage, cultural traditions, previous experience. The back third is the correction. Russo says the loop as commonly presented is missing feedback and learning. Ponch agrees the linear picture is missing it, and shows what the real loop already contains: Boyd's note that control is outside in while command is inside out, Karl Friston's statement on this show that the real OODA loop is isomorphic with active inference, and why predictive processing and ecological dynamics both live inside the same sketch. Then Russo asks the question that stays with you. What happens when someone targets your cultural heritage, and you have nothing left you believe in enough to fight for? Neither of them fully concedes the opening question, and the disagreement is the useful part. Russo says what changed is scale, speed, personalization, and persistence. Ponch holds that the mechanism was named decades ago and that a linear reading of the OODA loop is what leaves people unable to see it. Where those meet is the practical point: the delivery got cheap and fast, the target never moved. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. Since we don’t know how to do this, we must continue the whirl of reorientation…” A promotional message for Ember Health.  Safe and effective IV ketamine care for individuals seeking relief from depression. Don't Steal the Struggle: The Real OODA Loop in Basketball | Rob Gardner

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail About one percent of high school basketball players go on to play Division I. The other ninety nine percent still spend their lives on teams, under pressure, reading situations nobody scripted for them. That gap is the argument at the center of this conversation. Ponch sits down with Rob Gardner of PGC Basketball, founder of Play Explore Love, a camp director who has coached in more than forty states and nine countries. Gardner was cut in eighth grade, started varsity as a senior, walked on at Vanderbilt, taught high school math in Memphis, then quit and drove across the country to figure out what he wanted to do every day. Rivera met him in a gym in Haverford, Pennsylvania after dropping his daughters at camp. What he saw was a coach changing the conditions rather than correcting the players. That is the constraints-led approach, and it drops straight into John Boyd's real OODA loop, where orientation is the center and shapes what a player even perceives. The through line is harmony. The Blue Angels are aligned on the outcome and doing different things in every cockpit to hold the formation. A jazz ensemble plays in one key at one tempo and nobody follows a script.  A basketball team running principles of play instead of memorized plays is doing the same thing, and that is implicit guidance and control, the fast path where skill lives. They cover practice over games, why handing a player the answer steals the learning, tempo and John Wooden on quickness and composure, shot selection as shared language, the third way between order and chaos, the economics of AAU, and why good development looks messy long before it looks fast. OODA loop, John Boyd, real OODA loop, orientation, implicit guidance and control, constraints-led approach, CLA, ecological dynamics, skill acquisition, decision making under uncertainty, basketball coaching, PGC Basketball, AAU, youth sports, mission command, tempo, flow state, No Way Out podcast. Orientation Is the Target: Cognitive Warfare & the Real OODA Loop | Svitlana Pavlovska

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Svitlana Pavlovska wrote a 48-page analytical review this July, Cognitive Warfare. Opinion., that traces John Boyd from Energy-Maneuverability Theory through Destruction and Creation and Patterns of Conflict into the modern concepts of Decision Advantage, Cognitive Advantage, Narrative Intelligence, and Cognitive Security. She joins No Way Out to walk through it. She spent her career in Ukraine's security forces, led public affairs departments, and finished her last NATO posting at Joint Force Command Naples in 2024. She retired two months ago and now heads analytical output at a private firm. Her central claim is that orientation is the target. Information arriving at two people produces two different decisions, because orientation is where that information meets prior experience, knowledge, values, and culture. Cognitive operations are therefore designed to work on orientation rather than to transmit or deny information. Brian "Ponch" Rivera and Pavlovska follow that through the progression her paper lays out, from material advantage to information advantage to decision advantage to cognitive advantage, and into Dr. James Giordano's argument that cognitive security means protecting the biological, psychological, and social foundations of cognition itself. Those three levels sit very close to the inputs Boyd puts inside the orientation box. Also covered: why the European literature on the OODA loop reads as copies of one secondary source and cites a book Boyd never wrote, what AI has done to ordinary verification, the difference between NATO's defensive framing and the American operational framing of cognitive warfare, and why doctrine cannot be built while five different terms are used interchangeably. What a Quarterback Sees in 2.5 Seconds: The Real OODA Loop | Dub Maddox

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail A quarterback gets about two and a half seconds to read a picture that eleven people spent all week building to deceive him, and the picture usually changes anyway. No Way Out host "Ponch" Rivera calls that an orientation problem, and it is the subject of this conversation with Dub Maddox, creator of the R4 Football System. It started with a pick six. Twenty years ago Maddox's high school quarterback came to the sideline and said he had no idea what he was seeing. Maddox went looking for a way to train a young brain to process under pressure, and the search took him to John Boyd. R4 stands for rhythm, read, rush, release: four separate decision phases inside one play, each one its own orientation problem. They get into hip angle and what a defender's hips tell you, route timing and why a quarterback locked on a dig has already missed the throw that was there, and what Maddox found inside SEC and NFL quarterback rooms. He also tells the story of asking one of the most respected quarterback coaches in the country how you teach a kid to recognize open, and being told the quarterback just knows. The Real OODA Loop in Hockey: How CLA Coaches the Emergent Game | Dan Poliziani

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Hockey is an emergent game. The puck changes hands every couple of possessions and nothing holds still long enough to script, so the players who win are the ones who read what is coming. No Way Out host Brian "Ponch" Rivera calls that the real OODA loop, and it is the heart of this conversation with Dan Poliziani, a hockey coach of more than forty years, former Yale player, and son of an Original Six pro. After losing an eye early in his pro career, Poliziani followed the doctors' account of how his brain would rewire itself into a lifelong study of how people learn, and what he found maps onto John Boyd's OODA loop. He describes coaching as designing environments rather than running drills, shaping the constraints so athletes self-organize. That is the constraints-led approach and ecological dynamics, and it drops right into Boyd's model, where orientation is the center and skill lives in implicit guidance and control, the part built through experience, not instruction. They cover blocked versus random-variable practice, debriefing as orientation-building, why learning is non-linear with long plateaus of consolidation, balance bikes versus training wheels, late specialization and Epstein's Range, biobanding, mission command, and why a well-oriented mind is the real edge in sport and in an AI-shaped world. The uncomfortable through line: stop coaching athletes like machines to be programmed, and start coaching them like complex adaptive systems that self-organize and win. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. A TOPGUN Goes to the Merge With TBI, PTS, and Ibogaine | Trey Warren

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Trey "Raggot" Warren graduated from TOPGUN and flew in the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Super Hornet as a Naval Flight Officer. He was also, three separate times, suicidal.  In fighter terms he went to the merge with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and the fight to get his life back. On No Way Out, Trey tells Brian "Ponch" Rivera how buried post-traumatic stress surfaced after his father's death, how stacked VA prescriptions left him feeling like a zombie, and how he found the way out: ayahuasca, psilocybin, and ibogaine with 5-MeO-DMT at Ambio, guided by fellow Naval Flight Officer Mark "Slider" Keller, the same door Kegan "Smurf" Gill walked through.  A year and a half sober, Trey now teaches, meditates daily, and works as a peer support coach and legislative ambassador for VETS and Americans for Ibogaine. Ponch ties it to John Boyd's OODA loop, orientation, and the flow cycle of struggle, release, and recovery, and to the idea that the real work is the debrief. Trey's message: suicidality does not care what you did in the military, and there is a path through. Veterans Crisis Line, 24/7: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255. Not medical advice. Ibogaine is Schedule I in the U.S. and is dangerous without cardiac screening and medical supervision. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. The Transcendent OODA Loop: Jordan Hall on AI, Strategy & What Makes Us Human

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail The OODA loop is not a four-step process. Jordan Hall came on to prove it. Co-founder of DivX and Neurohacker Collective, founding voice of Game B, and former Santa Fe Institute trustee, Hall has spent months deep in math, physics, and AI, and he surfaces with a sharp claim: there is a transcendent OODA loop, the strategy that stays optimal and most evolvable across every landscape, and it works as an attractor in strategy space. Whatever sits closest to that peak wins. Ponch takes it from Boyd to active inference to the future of work. Why LLMs are powerful but ungrounded. Why the coherent generalist now beats the specialist. Why big organizations are dissolving into fluid squads. Why AI is the best bullshitter ever built, and why the only skill that matters is the ability to call it. And why, on the far side of the disillusionment, nothing an AI can do was ever essential to being human. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. Michael Polzin, regenerative architect and founding operator of Universal Natural Intelligence, came on to prove it, and to argue that active inference, the math underneath Boyd's orientation, is now buildable as a working intelligence that uses no machine learning at all. Polzin's frame: humans are prediction machines. We forecast before we act, we get surprised when reality disagrees, and we survive by calibrating our signals against the world and each other. He separates true from honest, teaches calibration with tape measures and chopsticks, and tells the story of a single team and process that outlasted twelve years and half a million devices by recalibrating as the world changed. Then he describes agents given a world but no goal, who met broken tools with adaptation instead of panic, and whose behavior can be dialed into anxiety, depression, and intoxication by moving mathematical sliders. Ponch ties it to orientation, to getting inside the OODA loop through genetics, culture, and language rather than speed, and to the show's founding line: attack the system, never the person. Plus the launch of EducateWright and its $25 million anti-violence and active inference pledge. OODA loop, John Boyd, real OODA loop, orientation, active inference, free energy principle, universal natural intelligence, beyond LLMs, decision making under John R. Ember Health's evidence-based, partner-oriented, and patient-centered care model, boasting an 84% treatment success rate with 44% of patients reaching depression remission. Did John Boyd Leave Game Theory Out of the OODA Loop

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Game theory tries to solve the game. The OODA loop reshapes the conditions under which any game gets played. Brian "Ponch" Rivera and Mark "Moose" McGrath open the archives and ask a sharp question: John Boyd clearly understood game theory, so why is it nearly absent from A Discourse on Winning and Losing? The answer is Orientation. Game theory assumes a fixed board with stable payoffs. Boyd assumes every representation is incomplete and open to manipulation, and that the act of observing changes the game itself. You cannot optimize a matrix while your opponent is dissolving it. Sparked by Donald D. Hoffman and Andrew Gallimore's new "Traces of Others" paper, this is a fast, host-only reorientation on why the real OODA loop is not a menu of options and never was. OODA loop, John Boyd, orientation, non-linear OODA, decision making under uncertainty, game theory, destruction and creation, implicit guidance and control, maneuver warfare. John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:  “There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. The America Codes: Apollo to Artemis with Alan W. Green

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Two hundred fifty years ago a beer salesman named Timothy Matlack copied out the Declaration of Independence in perfect hand and left two mistakes. Alan W. Green says they were never mistakes. On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, Green returns to No Way Out. He first made the case in Ep 113. This time he goes all the way in. Ponch and co-host James "Bart" Bartelloni sit with 22 years of Green's work. Count every character in the original and you get 6,771. The mirror of 1776. Drop it into a grid and every line runs 111 wide. Take the distance from the Earth to the Moon, divide by that number, and you land on the speed of light. Green reads all of it as pattern. Discovered, not invented. No Way Out does not tell you the codes are real. The show does what it always does. Take outside information seriously. Run it against orientation. Watch destruction and creation happen when a 250 year old document meets a room that refuses to dismiss anything on sight. Boyd said orientation shapes what you are able to observe before you observe it. Green says the founders left a way to reorient. Michael Levin's platonic space, active inference, the fourth turning, the precession of the equinox, sacred geometry. It all runs back to the one question this show was built on. How does anything stay current with a reality that never stops moving. You do not have to arrive at 100 percent. Bart runs 51 percent and says so on the record. Either way, this one stretches the aperture. Reorienting Health: A Naval Aviator's Journey from the Cockpit to Functional Medicine with Cynthia Fluck

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Cynthia Fluck graduated from the Naval Academy in 1998, earned her wings flying helicopters in the Navy, and transitioned out of the military — through Lockheed Martin, into real estate, and eventually into a practice combining functional medicine with energy healing. She now works primarily with women in midlife, treating causal factors rather than symptoms, and approaching the human body the same way Boyd approached any complex system: as something that cannot be fixed by a linear model. In this conversation, Ponch and Cindy reconnect after more than twenty years — two Naval Aviators who spent time together in Europe during their service years and arrive at this conversation having taken completely different paths to the same underlying question: what does it actually mean to reorient? They cover the healthcare system as a system problem — one that rewards sick care over root cause resolution, the same way any organization rewards outputs over orientation. They get into nervous system regulation and the vagus nerve as the body's feedback loop. They explore breathing as a performance tool for high-stakes environments, the distinction between functional lab analysis and conventional medicine's "normal range" standard, and the idea that the brain does not process linear time — which means unresolved trauma from the past is, physiologically, still happening now. The OODA connection runs through all of it. Cindy's approach to her clients is explicitly a probe-and-adjust model: form a hypothesis, try it, get feedback, revise. She describes her intake process in almost exactly the language Boyd used to describe decisions as hypotheses and actions as tests. Neither of them planned that. It emerged from the conversation — which is the only way it ever does on this show. Website: crescentholistic.com No Way Out is produced by AGLX. Learn more at aglx.com. The Fractals of Finance: Richard Brennan on Complex Adaptive Markets and the Real OODA Loop

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Most investors lose because they are running a predictive model in a system that punishes prediction. Richard Brennan has spent decades building the alternative: align with price instead of predicting it. Richard Brennan is a trend follower, complex adaptive systems researcher, and author of The Fractals of Finance and Complex Adaptive Markets. He joins Mark McGrath and Brian "Ponch" Rivera on No Way Out for a conversation about why the market cannot be predicted, why it can be aligned with, and what that has to do with John Boyd, Karl Friston, and the free energy principle. Rich came to trend following through a science background that would not let the standard economic assumptions go unchallenged. The conversation covers the market as a reflexive complex adaptive system, why calm markets build hidden fragility, phase transitions and nonlinear change, fat tails and power laws, why volatility is not risk, and the geometry of wealth. Ponch and Mark connect Rich's aligning with price to Boyd's orientation and Friston's free energy principle, and the convergence becomes the conversation. Jerry Parker, who wrote the forewords to Rich's books, introduced him to the show.  Find Rich at atstradingsolutions.com, the Traders Outpost. John R. Shawn Myszka on the Constraints-Led Approach, the NFL Combine, and Coaching the Player Not the Method

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail The NFL Combine measures the wrong variable. Shawn Myszka has spent two decades training NFL players and watching the gap between what the combine predicts and what wins on Sundays. Shawn Myszka, founder of Emergence and co-author of Enhancing Skill in American Football, joins Mark McGrath and Brian "Ponch" Rivera on No Way Out to walk through why the dominant model of NFL skill development is failing and what the constraints-led approach offers in its place. The conversation moves from a 2008 origin story about an NFL veteran whose physical metrics exceeded his draft year while his game did not, into the deeper framework underneath Shawn's work. Perception, cognition, and action operating as an integrated system. Practice design that builds adaptive players rather than drilling isolated movement patterns. The constraints-led approach to skill acquisition. Coaching the player, not the method. Mark and Ponch bring the OODA framework alongside Shawn's constraints-led approach, and the convergence becomes the conversation. The episode closes with where this goes next: AI in active inference, the shift from alignment to harmony in NFL strategy, and why football has to evolve from a game of attrition to a game of cognition. The A-Frame: A Navy SEAL's Extension of Boyd's OODA Loop with Adam "Guz" Karaoguz

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Retired Navy SEAL Adam "Guz" Karaoguz has spent the last ten years building an extension of Boyd's OODA loop he calls the A-Frame. Attention, appreciation, action, with attunement as the goal. Adam joins Mark McGrath and Brian "Ponch" Rivera to walk through the framework, the work behind it, and the personal experience that shaped both. Naval Postgraduate School thesis on ground force commander decision making. Years of synthesis through Iain McGilchrist on the divided brain, John Vervaeke on parasitic processing and relevance realization, and Gary Klein on recognition-primed decision making. The conversation moves into Adam's ibogaine treatment in Tijuana at Ambio, the integration work after the experience, and the moment he realized he was going for himself, not just for Slider. Adam also discusses his novel The Infernal Tower, the Story Grid framework he learned through Steven Pressfield's mastermind, and why storytelling and the OODA loop are the same pattern operating at different scales. Karl Friston Decodes the Real OODA Loop: Active Inference and What Boyd Got Right

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail Karl Friston, FRS, is the architect of the Free Energy Principle and Active Inference, the formal mathematics that describes how living systems perceive, predict, and engage with their environments under uncertainty. In this conversation, Brian "Ponch" Rivera and Mark McGrath walk Friston through John Boyd’s actual OODA sketch, not the linearized four-box version, and the result is the closest thing yet to a formal validation of what Boyd was reaching for in 1995. The conversation builds the framework from first principles: the irreducible features of the environment, the Markov blanket as the boundary defining a self, the generative model as the cognitive operating system Boyd called orientation, and the two implicit pathways Boyd drew but few have explained. Friston then formalizes what Wall Street intuits: risk as a KL divergence between prior preferences and predicted outcomes, ambiguity as volatility, expected free energy as the mathematics of risk under uncertainty. The episode also covers perceptual control theory, ecological psychology, predictive versus prospective control, flow states, the Rebus model and psychedelic-assisted therapy, autism and consciousness, the platonic space, and why current large language models cannot orient: they do not encode uncertainty, cannot plan over counterfactual futures, and therefore cannot truly act. This is the episode the show has been building toward for 163 conversations. The #2 NFL Draft Pick Who Almost Didn't Make It: Robert Gallery on TBI, Ibogaine, and Flow

Episode in No Way Out
Send us Fan Mail On April 18, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to accelerate ibogaine research and expand veteran access. No Way Out recorded this conversation the day before — and it's the orientation event the policy statement isn't. Robert Gallery was the second overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. By 2019, twenty years of head trauma had left him in a daily fog of brain damage, rage, and alcohol, with no clear way forward. He had the brain scan, the neurologist, the hyperbaric chambers. None of it moved the needle. Then he heard veterans talking about ibogaine and flew to Tijuana. Brian "Ponch" Rivera, Mark "Moose" McGrath, Gallery, and Mark "Slider" Keller — who has personally supported over 400 veterans through ibogaine treatment — cover what reorientation looks like from inside the process. Not the policy. The experience. They bring the Boyd frame: the flow states Gallery found on the football field, the orientation that collapsed after twenty years of grind and injury and retirement, and what ibogaine started and integration had to finish. Slider explains why he now calls ibogaine an oneirogen with psychedelic side effects — not a psychedelic — and what separates the people who hold their healing from the ones who don't. Gallery built Athletes for Care to take what the veteran community figured out and bring it to athletes who are still suffering in silence. The executive order just made the conversation easier to have. This episode is the reason it matters. Guest resources: athletesforcare.org | vetsolutions.org | John R.
