The Nightmare Before Christmas is a film that released in 1993 about one Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween! Jack helps run "Halloween Town", a kind of personification of the holiday whose residents spend all year gearing up for the event. Jack finds himself becoming bored by his constant success of throwing the scariest and most horrifying Halloweens ever known since it's just not challenging to him anymore. He happens upon a magic gate that whisks him away to "Christmas Town", and invigorated by all the new and excited things he sees, Jack decides to.... help Christmas this year. Hijinks ensue! Sam the snowman tells us the story of a young red-nosed reindeer who, after being ousted from the reindeer games because of his beaming honker, teams up with Hermey, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, the prospector. They run into the Abominable Snowman and find a whole island of misfit toys. Rudoph vows to see if he can get Santa to help the toys, and he goes back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. Spaceballs is a comedy spoof released in 1987 parodying most of the sci-fi classics to that day. The list of actors and guest stars is huge, so suffice to say that pretty much everybody is somebody. The villainous Dark Helmet and his subordinate Col. Sandurz plot to attack the nearby planet Druidia, under the command of the Spaceball's leader, President Skroob. They attempt to kidnap a royal from the planet, Princess Vespa, who is promptly rescued by an intergalactic scoundrel named Lone Starr, and his animalistic sidekick Barf. While making their escape, they crash land on a desert planet and meet the mighty mystic and merchandising mogul, Yogurt. Back to the Future Part One was a comedy where teenage boy Marty McFly is sent back in time 30 years, accidentally stops his parents from meeting, and has to bring them back together just in time to travel back to the future! In Part Two, he and his friend Doctor Emmett Brown travel to the year 2015 to stop tragedy from befalling Marty's future family! Though they succeed, the time machine is stolen unbeknownst to them, and future knowledge is sent to the past, altering their time stream! For the most part, the first half of the movie is marveling at the film's depictions of the “future”, while the second half is showing the dangers of abusing that power, and it's potential consequences. Through contact with a mysterious substance, called Ooze, 4 little turtles in the canalization of New York mutate to giant turtles. They can speak, walk upright and love pizza. The wise rat Splinter becomes their mentor and educates them to Ninja fighters. Their arch-enemy is the bad, bad guy Shredder, who struggles to gain power over the world. X-Wing and TIE Fighter are 3-D flight simulators from then PC gaming LUMINARY LucasArts and was released in 1993. Main differences between X-Wing and other modern, realistic flight sims? Well, space battles have the complete lack of ground to crash into, meaning you have a truly free 3-dimensional flight zone to operate in. Also: There are Energy Shields, Laser Blasters, Hyperspace, and Capital Ships the size of a city. Combine that with a rabid fanbase who were chomping at the bit for more Star Wars material, and you had a surefire hit. Princess Mononoke is the story of a young man who is cursed by a corrupted spirit. In search of a cure, he ventures to the west and encounters all manner of conflict. Rampaging samurai, bandits, paranoid villagers, and another traveler with an odd fascination with him. He eventually finds himself in the forest of the Deer God (that's a rough translation), encountering forest spirits, wolf gods, and a human girl who believes herself a wolf. Still in awe of the power and beauty of nature, he reaches the edge of the forest and finds Irontown, a small fortress where workers clear the trees to mine iron from the land and create swords and guns. And this is the thrust of the film. The people of Irontown are good people, but uncaring about the environment, while the spirits would glady slaughter them all, facing corruption and death. Truck driver Jack Burton arrives in Chinatown, San Francisco, and goes to the airport with his Chinese friend Wang Chi to welcome his green-eyed fiancée Miao Yin who is arriving from China. However she is kidnapped on the arrival by a Chinese street gang and Jack and Wang chase the group. Soon they learn that the powerful evil sorcerer called David Lo Pan, who has been cursed more than two thousand years ago to exist without physical body, needs to marry a woman with green eyes to retrieve his physical body and Miao is the chosen one. Jack and Wang team-up with the lawyer Gracie Law, the bus driver and sorcerer apprentice Egg Shen and their friends and embark in a great adventure in the underground of Chinatown, where they face a world of magicians and magic, monsters and martial arts fighters. Castlevania is an action platformer game from the NES era of video games. There are lots of enemies, lots of weapons to use, lots of stairs, and everything has this distinct "horror" element to it. You fight through six stages, each with it's own scary boss and each one getting progressively more and more difficult. The difference between this game and, say, Mega Man or Metroid, is that Castlevania has all kinds of commitment issues. Once you jump, you are commited and unable to alter your jump path in any way. Once you swing your whip, it has to go through it's entire animation cycle, which is significantly longer than just firing a shot from your arm cannon. There's a visionary in the world of sweets and confectionary, a Mr. Willy Wonka! Tired of rivals stealing his trade secrets, he closed his factory down, but after three years of inactivity it starts back up again, but nobody is seen entering or leaving. One day Wonka sends out five golden tickets in random chocolate bars, and the lucky ones who find them will be the first guests his factory has hosted in a generation. The factory holds all manner of fantastical innovations inside it, like a chocolate river, edible plants, gravity defying soda, and everlasting gobstoppers (among other things)! Cowboy Bebop is an anime series that's hard to pin to a single genre, incorporating (among other things) fast action, film noir, physical comedy, humanist philosophy, and all of it within a sci-fi setting. Essentially, you follow the adventures of the four main characters and their dog on their bounty hunting exploits that can lead down all kinds of rabbit holes. A simple bail jumper could be the key to unraveling a sinister corporate conspiracy, or an elite hacker responsible for millions of dollars in damage might turn out to be a kid thinking they're playing an elaborate video game. Nursed back to health by a mysterious benefactor (chairman of the Knight Industries), he regains consciousness a new man with a new face and a new name: Michael Knight. His mysterious benefactor (through the guise of associate Devon Miles) provides Michael with equipment and support so that he can continue his crime fighting work. Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk action and intrigue movie set in the near future and follows the exploits of a Special Operations Force known as Section 9. Section 9 is an assortment of military and law enforcement personnel, hackers, technicians, and bureaucrats whose primary function is counter-terrorism. What makes them interesting though, is the kind of terrorism they battle, which is primarily cyber-terrorism. In a world where it's possible to hack into a person's mind and steal information or even alter the person's memory and direct their actions, the hardest criminals to catch are the ones who never leave the shadows.
